I don't believe that Apple ever called the Edge phone the '2G' phone. It was called just "the iPhone" at the time and now something like the "Original iPhone" or first-generation.

People use the 1/2/3/4G labeling as a habit from the iPods to quickly refer to different generations.

It will never be the actual retail name though, I would guess either iPhone 4 or iPhone HD.
Apple never referred to the original iPhone as the 2G in its own documents, but that's how others refer to it. Go ahead and search for 'iphone 2g' on your favorite search engine. The phone that comes up is the original iPhone, not the second-generation iPhone 3G.

The 'G' designation works fine for iPods. It doesn't work for iPhones because the network technology designation. As I mentioned, calling the fourth-generation iPhone the '4G' won't work because LTE is commonly referred to as '4G' and there will be an iPhone based on that technology.

Looks like those pictures that were taken and posted on aplesfera are FAKE. They person admitted to it. Read the final update!!

Now here is where I am confused. What about the picture from 4 months ago next to the iPad?

I vote real, as those pictures came out the night before the ipad keynote and it turned out to be the real deal. The case around the ipad is just to keep it on the table or something, apple is noted for doing this for pre release products.

dude, you have ur photo sets all mixed up, they are on about the other ones.

The original one found in the bar is real as far as we can tell. The iPad pic is REAL. It's all but confirmed to be an early ass prototype.

Will the final version look like that? Probably not. Will it have a similar overall style? Probably yes.

End of story. So much misinformation being spread it's insane.

cmaier, why would they use glass for the back? What are the advantages? Wouldn't that just make it less durable over all?

Glass has a higher dielectric constant value than the current polymer. I suggest you read a bit on "dielectrics" for a better understand of what I'm trying to say. A high dielectric constant will result in a slower propagation of microwave through the glass and it allows for polarisation of the glass.

I'm condfused. Which are "real" and which are "fake"

The ones engagdet has is real?

Someone care to elaborate?

I just don't know what to believe anymore…
:(

Simples.

Sh#ts gonna hit the fan tomorrow if C&D letters are released by Apple. Here's to hoping this is somewhat real and they will have a event in May showing it off.

Won't be a C&D - no basis for it. No one is violating Apple's copyrights or trademarks.

Glass can be very durable, and very recyclable. I'm told that plastic can be recycled, but only a certain number of times, degrading each time, and eventually ends up as landfill trash.

Glass is a dielectric, as ct2k7 points out. If you make a sandwich of two conductors and dielectric in-between, you've made a capacitor. Could be a capacitive touch back. Could just look cool. Who knows.

Lol, maybe they used bullet proof glass. Watch there be a news item about an iphone saving a guy in a shooting. :D

Anyway, I'm still hoping the pics are fake and that the real phone doesn't look like that. :(

I don't think that the new iPhone will be like this. These are just prototypes. That's why they look so ugly. These are not the Apple-like designs.

Still, I'll be looking forward to see the specs. Seems like a killer thing is on the way.

That makes no sense. Apple has been using the 'G' designation on the iPhone to refer to the mobile carrier technology. The first iPhone was '2G' (EDGE), the next two were '3G' referring to the network connectivity.

This summer's iPhone will not be labelled '4G' because LTE is not widely available.

I already told you all the name is going to be iPhone iiii

Ok two serious questions, is glass cheaper than polymer and does this glass Apple is using have the durability to not shatter or crack the first time someone drops it from two feet up?

I think iPhone IVΓ is a solid name :D
