Ok two serious questions, is glass cheaper than polymer and does this glass Apple is using have the durability to not shatter or crack the first time someone drops it from two feet up?

I think iPhone IVΓ is a solid name :D

Glass is likely more expensive. It can be made essentially impervious to shattering if dropped on its face, but likely would be very fragile if dropped on its edge. Presumably there would have to be plastic or rubber padding around the edge inside the frame to cushion it from edge-ward falls.

The only issue with me answering that is that I don't know anything about the glass being used. From a chemist's POV, (me) I would say polymer is cheaper. From a physicist's POV (me), glass is hard but not strong. Is it durable, depends, but I think the edge will be cussioned to absorp impacts.

I just don't know what to believe anymore…
:(
Ultimately, it doesn't really matter. Perhaps one of the photos is real, but it's probably a photo of an engineering prototype (i.e., not the final retail design).

Engineering prototypes are often built to provide easier access to the parts and may be made of less expensive and/or different materials.

It is likely that Apple builds a variety of engineering prototypes using different components from different suppliers to assess the viability of different designs.

Apple - a highly secretive company - has been known to compartmentalize information so few people have a picture of the final complete device (i.e., hardware, software, and industrial design engineers don't know exactly what others are working on).

I don't think that the new iPhone will be like this. These are just prototypes. That's why they look so ugly. These are not the Apple-like designs.

Still, I'll be looking forward to see the specs. Seems like a killer thing is on the way.

I don't buy this line of thinking at all. The iPad case in the photo is very clearly something that is meant to disguise the product. The supposed iPhone is what it is - naked, not in a case. I'm not sure what's up with the buttons versus the volume rocker switch, but maybe it's to provide more functionality for apps and other uses.

Apple got so tied up in keeping the iPad a secret that it got sloppy with the iPhone. And FFS, what is someone doing taking this thing out of the lab?? It isn't going to be a happy day at 1 Infinite Loop tomorrow.

I don't mind the new design. I'm sure that Apple would polish the device to remove the unsightly features before releasing it. Whatever they release will be as smooth as the MacBooks and iPad.

So does anyone actually think this is fake anymore?

I'm usually very quick to dismiss anything as real when it comes to these things, as they pop up all the time. But after hearing that Apple remote wiped the OS and that it was found VERY close to Cupertino, I'm taking the European approach -- Real until proven fake (like guilty until proven innocent hehe).

The real story:

Steve and Jonno were a bit busy with the iPad. And Phil said that the iPhone was a no-brainier, that the design could stay "pretty much the same", and that it just needed some "technical adjustments", so he got to run with it ...

Saw this in the engadget post's comments, lol:

It's def not going to look like the 3GS, and you guys have to understand, nothing is for sure till apple announces it. Prototypes are always made and this clearly isn't a full production model, yet.

Let's all be patient and wait a couple months to see what happens :)

cmaier, why would they use glass for the back? What are the advantages? Wouldn't that just make it less durable over all?

Multi-touch on the back. Think the Magic Mouse-type surface on the back. On a call and want to raise the volume? Just slide your index finger up the back of the phone. Looking at the screen and want the brightness up? Slide your finger up the back.

Won't be a C&D - no basis for it. No one is violating Apple's copyrights or trademarks.

Yeah, but by the time you pay the legal bills to actually make that argument in court, Apple wins anyway.
