In an interview with SFGate, the project director for the Civic Center said he had no knowledge of what the building was being used for, while a spokeswoman for the Planning Department said the "trade show" information was all department was told.
I'm not buying it. The civic center is a public building, and there is no way the SF Planning Department is being kept in the dark about who is using it and how it will be used. In fact, I would think the proposed use of a public building would need to be part of the public record.

Bill Graham was(?) a big time music promoter

Yes, "was" is correct. Sadly, Mr. Graham died in a helicopter accident about 25 years ago.

Found a photo of the Civic Auditorium the last time Apple was there...

They'd better have something really great to show us there.

i have a feeling , apple hire taylor swift come to event a sing for departure show:D .....

I can confirm that Adams and Associates is an AV company that runs almost every Apple gig behind the scenes. They handle WWDC, product introductions, and, formerly, MacWorld. Now they don't exclusively work for Apple, but they are the primary vendor for Apple's events (on campus and off), so yeah, I'd be very surprised if this is not an Apple event.

I'm looking forward to the new iPhones and will appreciate anything extra. Given the size of the venue and all the rumors lining up, I think we'll see one of the biggest presentations ever by Apple. I think it's somewhat needed given the past few reveals have been somewhat muted (not counting the Apple Watch event).

My gut tells me that AppleTV may be a much bigger release than we expected!!

Media Streaming, Game playing, App Downloading, HomeKit Command Center, Phone and Video Conferencing device and more. It might also have a built in wifi router.
Have a talk with that gut, will you.

Has anyone checked the schedules at Apple's other usual venues? Yerba Buena, Moscone, etc? If they are all booked to other named companies that would reinforce this rumor somewhat.

So then the next question is WHY this venue. (Aside from the fact that Apple was basically *born* in this building when they introduced their very first complete personal computer at the West Coast Computer Faire)

All I can come up with is either:
  1. The TV update is a huge leapfrog kind of update, and they need the extra headcount to invite tv/film/entertainment industry.
  2. They're also introducing the TV subscription package
  3. The TV update includes major homekit functionality and some of the auditoriums interior space will be set aside for demos and such

Me thinks this too. I think you forgot the gaming industry. I personally wouldn't be surprised they launch a streaming service for movies. Why? Why not. People have overly focused on a TV package when in fact 9 to 5 mac offered speculation that the TV App Store would now allow outside updating to TV apps by networks etc.. I really think that's the way it's going. No packages. Just flat out a la carte controlled by content companies directly leaving Apple out of it. Kind of a Apple Pay model. Apple just handles the transactions per say.

Just saying.

Hmmm... putting and Apple event in the in the Tenderloin... lining up outside outside should be fun!

Yep, I worked through them many times as a freelancer over many years, always at Apple events. The company's founder, Steph Adams—and by extension also those he hired—was very closely trusted by Steve Jobs. Think of all the proprietary info they had access to before intros of iMac, iPod, iPhone, iPad, etc., and of course it takes a special crew to deal with Jobs' infamous hyper attention to detail, micromanaging, and various whims and paranoias. And that trust continued with the new leadership after Jobs passed.

Has there even been any confirmation of an event for Sept 9. If it was happening, shouldn't the press have invites by now?

Yeah, actually I hope the new Apple TV has 3 levels with different storage options, with an App Store it has to have more storage.

32gb $149
64gb $199
256gb $349

Or allow connected storage, not likely

I'll pay more for more storage.
If Apple is serious about games and other apps on the device you will need more storage. 64 GB would be nminimal.

That would cost too much:D I'm sure they want an entry level version for 149.00 or even less.
It depends upon the feature set. The low end can be taken care of by the current model, to sop port the new capabilities AppleTV would need lots of flash storage.
I can't see just one size fits all if it has an App Store and games, which take a huge amount of space. I want choices for storage if I'm going to use this for all my media and apps/games I purchase.
On size fits all makes marketing simple. The key is achieving your price point while minimizing user frustration. If the new Appple TV has to down load apps and games fresh each time they are used that won't be accepted by users. As you note games use massive amounts of space and that only gets worst in the future.
3 choices like other Apple products is very simple.

Oh and I wouldn't mind one with a built in router for even more money, my dream Apple TV is really a server with all my media that I can stream to all my Apple products, and have all my home automation.

A lot of this functionality can be integrated into a SoC for nothing. It really is just a matter of how hard Apple wants to push technology. Do they jump to 14 nm or not?

A lot of people seem to think this is Apple TV related but would that really justify this large scale event. I'm thinking not and that Apple has something new up their sleeves, maybe a new generation iMac.

It's for the Ashley Madison user conference. Duh!

It would be hard to tell such an event from a tech event, recent reporting indicates that there where few real woman on Ashley Madison! This isn't much different than most tech events.

A few thoughts...

Apple, dba Adam and Associates

or...

Adam and Associates, a long time farm and tractor equipment wholesaler since 1866, was excited to see over 200,000,000 people watch their live online video announcement of their new super-tines, which last 3 times longer, are resistant to weathering, and are lightweight. There were some issues with the announcement, and they will have the video up on their website later today, after the sheer volume of the people wanting see the announcement overwhelmed their English Speaking servers, and the fail over had the video coordinated with the Mandarin Chinese voice-over.
"We never expected this kind of attention, but these are the most amazing tines you've ever seen! There has never been a plow like this, and the competition is well, there is no competition!"
A large group of young enthusiasts left the auditorium confused, as they thought this would be a pomaceous fruit picking demonstration.

$129.00 to 149.00 --- It is going to do so much more it will be worth it. The remote will be very cool! I HOPE!!!

I'm thinking $99. Apple tends to hold products at a steady target price point, then introduce a new product at the same price point that restores the competitive value. I think it was at $99 (until a recent cut due to the model was literally unchanged for over two years), so I think that is their target level. But they certainly have introduced new models at a higher price as well; I believe their exceptions tend to be because they are introducing expensive new components that seriously hurt their margin goals. A vastly enhanced remote or an increase in base capacity from 8GB to 32 GB could account for such an increase. Or they could bundle the current remote, and sell a new mega-remote for $79 or something. I could also see an optional capacity expansion box as well.
