What do you think of the new forum?

After the biggest Apple event of the year, peak activity for the forums, and no prior announcement was the time to do it, eh?

How is it that old saying goes... "There's never been a better time than the present" :p
Least it wasn't literally right after the event.

So what does everyone think of the new forum? I must admit, I'm not a fan, but it may just be because I'm so familiar with the old look, and it takes a while to get used to. If there's a way to disable system detecting dark mode btw, let me know. I'd like to keep the forum light even if macOS is in Dark Mode. Though it's cool that the feature is there in general. I think overall the designers have done a good job, I just really liked the old style. Especially notifications and the new threads list. Used those two a lot.

I haven't used the new forum much because I've been busy but it seems ok. I'm not having any issues. I didn't have any issues before either.

You'll get used to it. Give it some time.

Exactly.

While it will take a bit of time to get used to, from what I can see at the moment, it seems to be uncluttered and easy to navigate.

Moreover, any questions I have posed (or anyone else has asked) in the SFF section (or anywhere else) about the changes to the system, have been answered quickly and comprehensively.

Ok, not fighting, but please identify what is cluttered and confusing you? I’ve made several posts and In the forums, it is basically what it was before, slight changes, with an updated appearance.

Now being a new user to this updated version, I ‘ve not yet noted any significant change in it’s mechanics, the visual differences are subtle.

I wouldn't use the words "cluttered" or "confusing", but for Notifications, I think that the yellow background for new notifications in the poppet menu was much better at quickly seeing what was new and what was old, and the number for new notifications poking out from the bounding box had a much better aesthetic appeal to me, and more clearly indicated that there was something new (I am visually impaired btw, and it caught my eye much better)

Seeing all new threads is somewhat of a similar deal. Locating the button felt easier before. It blends in more with the background now, where I felt it stood out more before, making it easier for my bad eyesight to quickly scan across and find it. - But these may be issues only I have, and once I get really familiar with the new look, rabbit may make these complaints irrelevant :)

I like it.

One thing I don't like is how close the text is to the left is...
<-- here

If I could request one thing, it would be to double the padding on the left.

I apologize, I must have reference someone else’s post in this thread, or I’m losing my mind. I read cluttered and confused somewhere.
My critique of the forum is that it’s appearance seems washed out. The tool bar adds to the faded look, more faded than I would prefer.

I asked about themes and as far as I know, there are just 2, light or dark. Light is too bland for my tastes, dark is way too dark. I would prefer something in the middle.

I feel its cluttered. For example, the avatar icons are too big. Overall, there is a lot of fluff but not enough clarity.
I would simplify it a bit or at least give us options to tweak it.

Also, just tested dark mode and its cool but why is it only for forums and not for the main site too?

Someone definitely said that, yes. But that specific one wasn't me :). Though the word cluttered did come up in the post just after yours there, actually. Though with an example.

I definitely agree with that one. In some places there are nice colour seperations, but a but more contrast and flavour could work well. Also, whilst I prefer it in light mode for now, since the forums now support dark mode, the main MacRumors front page should too :).

Technical reason is that they run different software stacks. Will probably come eventually

Just realised there's an awesome button when someone is quoted, to go to the quoted post. Pretty sure that wasn't there before. I like that change. Also the whole site actually feels quite responsive in spite of the modernisation which I like. Not like how sites like YT or Facebook have evolved over the years...

I'd just like to serve notice to MR's designers and UI designers everywhere -- you, too will get old, and your visual acuity will suffer.

Contrast?.png

It seems that despite Apple's best efforts to increase the color gamuts in its displays, the twenty- and thirty-something designers everywhere are hell-bent on not utilizing it.

The hide-and-seek nature of modern UI, combined with the penchant to decrease contrast and make things harder to read, is a step backward, not forward, and a disservice to a good portion of the population.

If I had the opportunity, I'd like to reach through my monitor and b*tch slap whomever came up with the idea of grey text on white backgrounds, or variations thereof.

The main site is based on WordPress while the forums are based on Xenforo. They've done custom code to link the two together over the years. But they said they're working on a dark mode for the main site; just not there yet is all.

That was always there. It was a small thin arrow.

The new layout takes some getting use to. I remember the old layout one could click on the posters name and go to the last thread posted. Now one has to click on the page number box.

edit: I may have misremembered. Clicking on the time brings one to the last post.

The older version was more friendly but outdated. Bit early to decide on the new one but its bit confusing.

Yeah, to be honest, the new 2.1 update has a lot of great features, it’s far more responsive when navigating to different forums, but there are things that could be changed like ‘color coding’ the various forums as example. But there’s definitely a learning curve with the 2.1 update, a few veteran members have actually mentioned how the new update can be drastic in comparison of what the prior Xenoforo offered. Personally myself, I actually really liked the previous version, but I understand changes are needed to keep the website fluid and dynamic.

Strangely the colour is implied now. Lot better than yesterday. Every sub forum has its own colour now which is great.

You’re right, I didn’t see that they changed the color coding. I was using the mobile version prior [Where it was all the same color], but now that I’m on the desktop version, I can see the changes made. Thanks.

For me subject headers, comments, and quotes are all much more squished together and compact than they were before. The forum page was ridiculously easy to find the topic you were looking for, now everything on the page is super compact and cluttered. And the design needs much more contrast to differentiate between everything.
