Traditionally Mac only calls people to HQ at Macworld and the following October, they arent doing this just for a new ipod, expect a new Mac

Traditionally, Apple didn't create a whole separate division for a new product line like they have done with the iPod division either. BTW, I'm sure that they just call that the "Pod" division internally. They probably just call it the "iPod" division publicly to deter attention away from the fact that they are really working on an entire line of digital lifestyle devices that SJ told us we would be seeing in the future [back in '01].

5 years for R&D and to completion sounds good to me. Roll 'em out Apple Gimme my mobile vPod next week!

Next month, along with an Intel MacBook [Core Duo $999] and Intel Mac Mini Media [Core Solo $499], don't forget my home/workplace touch sensitive MacPod [NOT a PDA or Tablet thingy] for your anniversary.

My point "baddaddy" is that a true widescreen, touch sensitive vPod would definatley justify a press event at Apple's Town Hall.

The only Mac OS based device [computer or not] that will be intro'd next week would be maybe the Mac Mini Media [or just Mac Media, possibly a completely different product], but I'm thinkin' they'll save that/those for next month's anniversary event.

I'm thinking NO touch sensitive anything...

I ran across this earlier. As of today Apple was granted to patents that they filed for as much as four years ago. See the link...

http://www.macsimumnews.com/index.php/archive/two_new_patents_granted_to_apple/

That says to me that the recently filed patent applications for touchscreens should surface for MWSF 2009!

I don't want to be right, can anyone enlighten us as the the patent process?

I'm sure it's a new iPod!
I was talking to a Japanese girl who works for Apple Japan in Tokyo. I told her that I want to buy a new iPod when I'm in Japan again (coz cheaper than in Europe), but she said I'd better wait a little bit more, the new ones are already getting assembled in China... Unfortunately she works for finance dept. so she doesn't have any technical information, but she was right with the new Tokyo Shibuya Apple Store, too.
She said the new iPod might come out end of March or beginning of April...so I guess this press invitation has something to do with it.

Thomas

End March, beginning of April..that's another event then. Personally, I hope it's the new iBook. I don't think it's likely to be the iBook, but as the MBP is too expensive for me right now and I need to get a new laptop soon....

Oh, well. That's what discussing rumour is about, no?

New iSight for sure with compatible Photobooth for G4's..
I bet they release that, the bluetooth mighty mouse (slightly improved design), iPod HiFi featuring WiFi (AirTunes, AirFlicks), Mac Mini, Mac Mini Media Center Edition with optional touch screen remote.

Edit: oh and the new shuffle.

Hmm, no... I think it's a major update to iCal ;) Just joking... But it seams not very major "Fun new products from Apple".. I'm betting a new color for iPod socks as someone suggested :D

Maybe they will make some for the nanos and shuffles, called booties?

That would make the announcement a "bootie call."

In regards to Intel's ViiV "technology"..

The Intel® Viiv™ technology-based∇ personal computer requirements are:

* Intel® Pentium® D processor, Intel® Pentium® processor Extreme Edition, Intel® Core™ Duo processor
* Intel® 945, 955X or 975X Express chipset + ICH7-DH or Intel® 945GT or 945GM Express chipset + ICH7-MDH
* Intel® PRO/1000 PM or Intel® PRO/100 VE or VM Network Connection
* Intel® Quick Resume Technology Driver
* Intel® Matrix Storage Technology
* Native Command Queuing (NCQ) SATA hard drive
* Intel® High Definition Audio (5.1 and higher)
* 5.1 or better jacks OR SPDIF connector and stereo jacks
* Microsoft* Windows* XP Media Center Edition Update Rollup 21
* Remote control (optional)

This ViiV "technology" is more of a marketing scheme than a true technology.Also Note the Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition requirement.

The "ViiV" will never be on a Mac because Mac's don't use Windows.Even though the new Intel Macs have that same or similar hardware...

Hopefully,this will stop the constant referal to ViiV on a Mac.;)

To be certified as a Viiv-technology based, PCs must feature one of the following processors:

* Intel Pentium D,

* Intel Pentium Extreme Edition.

Alongside one of the following chipsets:

* Intel 975X Express, 955X Express, 945G Express, 945P Express, 945GT Express or
* Mobile Intel 945GM Express Chipset

Don't know if we have one of those chipsets.
Did you forget this one little requirement: Windows XP Media Center Edition??
Or did another person on the boards just get around to putting that on Wikipedia before me? :eek: :) b/c it is there now....

I just hope Apple can make an application like iPhoto but for porn, easy to arrange, easy to burn for all your friends and switch to a different screen when you're looking at your porno collection when somone comes in to the room.......

I shall call it iPorn

Apple can choose to make money from their online store instead. Yeah, others already do, and more will provide, DVR functionality, but Apple doesn't have to do it just because they are. Like i said, i hope they do, but don't think they will.

Maybe if they limit the quality of the DVR functionality and offer higher quality throught the iMVS [iMovie Video Store] along with extras [like the ones you get with DVD's] then it would work.

We'll see. But if they choose not to, then while the others are doing DVR, Apple can concentrate on online content distribution that seems to be working for them.

That reminds me, gotta go check the counter to see if they've hit their BILLION song sales mark yet. ;)

I don't see the logic here. Apple's not running iTMS to make money...sure it turns a profit but its basically there to make people buy ipods. If it could also help sell Mac Mini DVRs, so much the better! Keep in mind Apple makes very little on song sales, and given that TV shows are 10x the bandwidth and only 2x the price, they're probably making even less.

I think DVR is a great opportunity for Apple. Right now DVRs are still stuck in the nerd realm...a really slick box with slick interface thats ridiculous easy to use, looks nice next to your tv, and can download "on demand" from iTMS would be a huge hit with exactly the same crowd that loves the ipod.

Stuck in the "nerd" realm? Tivo being shown on "Sex and the City" makes DVRs "stuck in the nerd realm?" Also, much as I love Apple, they would have to do A LOT to improve on what Tivo has done for DVRs. In my mind, Tivo has got the UI for DVRs down pat.

No new products...

No new products... merely a press event to introduce the world to the person who purchased song number 1 billion - and the university that will receive the Apple scholarship.

I hope you are being sarcastic. The invite specifically says "new products"
