I'm sure its been posted -- I'm not going to read through 20+ pages to try and see -- but the inclusion of the iCal icon has to mean something.

I can't imagine this is a special buildup for the release of an iPod "accessory" like a "boom box" or whatever. How lame would that be? Inviting people in to see the newest accessory!? I think I'd walk out if Jobs pulled that kind of crap.

The inclusion of the iCal makes me think it has to be some kind of organizer/calendar -- either hardware or software. I can't imagine them releasing a PDA - not with the way the PDA market is tanking these days. Apple phone/organizer, maybe?

While the "Straight" PDA market has been falling, the "Converged Device" market has been going like mad. Phone / pda / pocket media player is the sweet spot. I think the motorola itunes phone was a precursor to something big, think ipod phone, with pda functions - A modern newton.

Of course, could just be me dreaming :p

Well, I'm not sure an alarm clock is fun. Most mornings I want to smash mine. A Bluetooth alarm clock? That's fun?! You need to get out more.

Yes, I do.

Well, the fun part would be that it would play your iTunes and announce events that you put on iCal. There's already something on the market that does some of that (iTunes alarm clock/stereo), but doesn't sync with iCal.

Dude. You better spell-check. When "gauchogolfer" sees the way you spelled hungry [hungary = the country] and "bothered [botherd = missed the e], he's... "gonna getcha!"

He "snapped" on MacMosher like 5 posts down.

MacMosher! YOU 'TARD!!!

You just got schooled on English grammar by someone from "Juan-les-Pins", [thank gawd for copy/paste] France!

Nothing against France or it's citizens "gauchogolfer". I'm just pointing out the irony.

Sorry, stepped away at work for long enough that this got bumped way up the list. Also, I should know better by now than to get upset about poor grammar in forums, or elsewhere on the 'prestigious Internet'. Really, my skin isn't that thin. BTW MacQuest, I'm an American citizen, I just live in Juan-les-Pins right now. Finally, I'll resist pointing out any more ironic statements, right after I remind you that it's = it is.;)

Cheers:p

I dont think Apple would use the iCal logo if it didnt mean anything other than the date of the event. They dont just randomly pick an image you know, its something which is to do with the product about to be announced. When you consider this fact the obvious product is a tablet based portable organiser. Think iPod sized but you can browse the net with its built wifi. Maybe it could have a built in microphone so you can chat on a iChat AV almost like a phone.

People talk about tablet PCs having no market and I think agree with that. Why not just carry around a normal laptop? It doesnt make sense. But if its iPod sized and you can slip it in your pocket, and it does basic things like checking email and stuff like that then who couldnt benefit from such a device in their pocket? People moan that they want a 13inch MacbookPro because the smaller the better, well how about something that can slip in your pocket?

Of course the thing will double up as an iPod as well....

If this isnt what Apple bring out then they should because it would kick ass.

Agreed, if that's what the "fun new thing" is, Apple will not release a PDA/Organizer that does not have phone, email, web, music capabilities.

I can't believe there are 560+ posts about an announcement that no one knows (at least who's talking) what's potentially going to be announced.

I can't believe anyone will actually read this post, either.

Great I can hear it now:

"It's Four am, time to get up and slave for the man...

Again."

I could see how this would be useful to some. My girlfriend never remembers what she's supposed to do. She writes things in her planner, then forgets to look at the planner.

I want an iPod/pda! I don't even want a pda, but it's about time to upgrade my 3G iPod, so it would be great to get a little more bang built into it...

If you have seen the news this week, you will know that Martha Stewart got fired by Donald Trump as part of the Apprentice saga. Now, Steve Jobs will replace Martha. :)

Actually iHome has a device much like this, an alarm clock/radio which has a place to put one's iPod so that you can awake to your iPod playing in the morning.

I don't think Apple will come out with an alarm clock device kind of thing, but certainly it's not out of the realm of imagination that they might come out with an iPhone/iPDA doohicky.... ?

I'm expecting the release of Apple's Pro Apps as Universal Binaries. Jobs said March, so he'll pat himself on the back for getting them out a day early. Meanwhile, a few Apple developers will get to go to sleep for the first time in weeks.

Pda?

It can't be a PDA. For a PDA to be successful, you would need lots of cool third-party software. Apple would need to move their developers to create neat, lightweight, apps optimized to display just the right information in a small amount of screen space -- kind of like widgets they just introduced for OS X.

Oh.

OS X-Box

It's a "fun new product", so it's probably a games console. Actually, it's plural, so it's probably a bunch of them.

<style type=over-enthusiastic-enthusiast>

I'm working on mock-ups right now, but here's how I see it selling:

OS X-Box mini (portable console)

640x480 64k screen, downloads games via Airport onto in-built HD

Good: 10G HD, no games $399
Better: 20G HD, Sonic the Hedgehog Bundle $499
Best: 60G HD, X-Bill, Breakout, Halo 7 $599

iX-Box (standard console)

HD out, two joypads, Intel Core Quatro CPU at 4GHz, plus integrated Intel Extreme Graphics, games on special square DVDs:

Good: no games: $999
Better: Halo 9 Pack: $1599
Best: Blue Meanies, Space Invaders, Unreal Tournament 2009, Metroid Factor of Two Large Primes (1024 digits each), Pong and Frogger: $1999

OS X-Box Pro

Seven box design, four joypads, Quad Intel Quatro CPUs at 4GHz each, plus ATI Radeon 7500 graphics.

Good: no games: $1999
Better: Pole Position 2006 bundle: $2499
Best: Atari ET, Windows Solitaire/Hearts/Freecell, Wumpus, Halo 12, that sliding puzzle thing that used to be a desktop accessory way back in the good old days, Super Mario Brothers, Doom 5, and PacMan: $2999.

</style>

I don't know about you, but I intend to get three of each.

Maybe it has already been posted:

Analysts for American Technology Research have started to weigh in with their product predictions for Apple's recently announced special media event, which is set to take place during the last day of February.

"We believe Apple will take the opportunity to round out its Intel Mac portfolio 6 - 9 months ahead of plan with a new widescreen consumer notebook (likely called "MacBook") and entry-level Mac mini, both of which will include a remote control and Front Row software," analyst Shaw Wu wrote in a research note released to clients early Wednesday morning.

Yeah, I read that too. It's a bunch of bull...

Clearly the writers at appleinsider.com and the analysts for American Technology Research have been reading this thread an few others like it.

Which one of you is an ATR analyst?

I really don't think anyone outside of Apple's NDA signers know what's coming next week.

You aren't the only one dreaming.

I have been struggling with carrying around a PDA, a phone, and an iPod. If I could merge the three into one device I would be in heaven.

While we're dreaming, it needs to be available from Sprint (only service that gets a decent signal in my neck of the woods) and work with Salling Clicker (which no offering from Sprint currently does, save the Treo 650, which I already have...but the next Treo will use Windows....blech...no more Treos for me).
