a good point, that I missed.

Realistically, inputing information is impossible (using a clickwheel to input someone's phone number??) without a much more advanced interface (keypad) or a touchscreen. If the rumors of a touchscreen iPod video are true-- certainly that problem is solved.

I saw someone else posting that there's be no 3rd party support -- why would there have to be? It doesn't have to be a Palm or a Pocket PC. Just something that would allow contact / address information, and all the same goodies that you get with the iPod videos today.

I figure its probably just an ipod accessory, or a ipod-photo that takes pictures... that would be my best guess anyways

I have previously posted my desire for an add on input device for the iPod, kind of like the PDA keyboards, that might plug into the dock connector, and allow for occasional input. Given that they have actually gone this way for the FM remote, this kind of iPod add-on might actually be one of the things they could announce next week.

Off topic, but while the current (not "next") Treo 700w does run Windows, Palm will soon intro a 700p model with the Palm OS. In fact, even when the Palm OS is killed (which it likely will by its new owner), it will morph into a Linux-based OS which should look and feel the same (or somewhat better) than the current Palm OS. So you can expect Palm OS on new Treos for a while.

How about iNav? GPS Navigator for iPod, they are building in car connectivity anyway.

One could also check out:

I have way too much spare time on my hands....

But since VIIV includes a hardware DRM component, there's nothing stopping Apple from using it, or their own homebrew version of it.
Unless the hardware DRM scheme uses the Windows Media scheme.... ;)

That's almost exactly what I suggested way back at post #133.

What a great thing to be able to add modular, docking functionality to your iPod. Not necessarily as cool as an iPod/PDA/phone, but perhaps an acceptable substitution. As much as I'd love an Apple phone, I don't see it happening.

on the viiv debate, a few people have mentioned it already, viiv is not out of the question, just because the CURRENT specs on it do not support Macs does not mean it will NEVER support it. I doubt that is the announcement though.

As for a PDA or Phone or any portable device running some kind of OS X... no one seems to be mentioning battery life! First off, as far as I know Apple has never been a fan of all in one devices (phone mp3 player camera) but even if a PDA or tablet or smart phone is released some aspect of it will have to suffer.

A smart phone will have how much standby and talk time if you use it as an ipod or to play videos as well? I think apple was careful not to brand the 5G ipod the VIDEO ipod because they know of the battery life.

I have ripped a lot of movies onto my ipod, and I can watch a movie all the way through, but that's it, I impress tons of peopel showing them the amazing quality and such, they get all excited to buy one, then I explain how I had to rip the DVD and how long it takes, and how you have to be MODERATLY tech savvy to do so... furthermore that 14-20hour battery life is NOT rated for video. And that's not to discourage them, it didn't discourage me, I love my ipod.

SO, I think if there is any update or improvement or new product, batteries will have to catch up first.

Either that or Apple has to stop being obsessed with making newer products tinier and tinier...

If your "iPod with video" was the same size and weight as the previous generations of iPods, think how much bigger the battery could have been. Think how much more running time you could have.

Nobody was complaining that the 3G/4G iPods were too big.

Not sure if anyone else has mentioned this..

If you look at some of the past releases by apple... iMac, MacBook Pro, both have an iSight put in there.

Why not with the video iPod?

--- iPod with built in iSight! To take small home movies & pictures?

Doubtful. It wouldn't make sense to put the entire DRM scheme into hardware, there would be no way to upgrade it. More likely, the hardware just does things like machine ID and keys, stuff that could easily work just as well with the iTunes DRM.

Definitely not a phone as we know it, but maybe Apple has something fun and innovative up their sleeves.

I bought my 5G at first sight in large part becasue it was significantly smaller than the 4G. I wasn't complaining, but the reduced size was a major selling point. I know that if I want longer battery life, I can always add an external battery pack.

No it isn't.

A PDA is not 'fun.' It's for work. An iPod is for fun. And iPods have nothing to do with iCal even given that they run a more or less useless calendar app that syncs to iCal.

China

I am going to be in Shenzen in a few days so maybe I'll swing by the factories and take a peak at what these fun new products are :D I'll post a special forum if anything interesting is seen (maybe photos 2).

Apple's Business Sense

Take a step back and try not to think of a product that you personally would appreciate, or that would fill a specific void in your life. Instead think about Apple's success with the iPod. Why would they want to introduce a device that would potentially cannibalize its iconic and best-selling product?

I know Apple has been able to cater to what people really want in the past rather than telling them what they need in order to conform with the rest of the world, but in this instance, anything that "doubles as an iPod" is out of the question. It just doesn't make sense for them.

An iPod update with enhanced functionality? Perhaps in the near future, but the idea of total convergence, though tempting on a personal level, doesn't make a lot of sense as it would inherently cut into iPod sales. Just look at the song cap on the SLVR.

No kidding... that's why along the way, my Palm V got sidelined and never replaced, I don't have a cell phone (waiting for something really good), and all I ever carry is my iPod.

You aren't the only one dreaming.

I have been struggling with carrying around a PDA, a phone, and an iPod. If I could merge the three into one device I would be in heaven.
