Couldn't resist

OK. Long time reader but first time poster on this forum. I just couldn't resist throwing in my viewpoint on this one.

I agree with others that the calendar probably means something, after all the image always has in the past.

My view is that Apple is in need of a new product, a new category killer much like the iPod was originally for digital music. I know everyone thinks that will be the video iPod but I'm not so sure. I think the iPod with video will suit many people, especially with a few revisions to increase the battery life. I think there is a gap currently between laptops and PDAs and it's one of the reasons that the PDA market has stalled. PDA makers have continually tried to add new features to their products to satisfy the demand for change, however, in the process they have often lost the very qualities that made them successful in the first place - simplicity, robustness and instant access. The iPod could go the same way if they try adding too much more so I think it's getting time to stop adding. Meanwhile laptops have become smaller, lighter and more connected via wi-fi negating the need to have a PDA anymore. Many people have commented on tablet pc's. I use one at work and I would say that if you think of it as a computer it absolutely fails because the input mechanism, while OK for low input volumes, is way to slow for anything serious. Since most early adopters are techies it doesn't surprise me that they hated it, it is really more of a business tool, I use it as a window into the digital world while I am away from my desk, a kind of supercharged PDA. But in true Windows fashion it is too slow to boot up, and requires too many unnecessary actions to use it effectively.

So I think Apple will create a new type of digital tool which will be a tablet format and primary use a pen for input but be the size of a small notebook. However, just like the 5th Gen iPod was a music player with video capability I think this product will be a digital assistant with computing capability so you shouldn't expect to be able to write programs, or perform heavy video editing, or photoshop type work (although you will be able to because it will be running OSX), but it will be perfect for using iTunes in your living room or on the road, it'll have built in isight and bluetooth so you can use iChat or Skype whenever you are in a wi-fi enabled area (e.g. in an office it would be like a VOIP phone you could use in a meeting to contact someone). It will be about the size of an OQO Model 1 so it will fit in a pocket but not be as small as an iPod and therefore a perfect size to watch videos (yes it is the iPod Video as well). Obviously you will be able to use the address book and iCal as well as safari and other OSX apps, but it will complement a mac not replace it, as well as an iPod which will still be perfect if you want a smaller form factor and no input capability (remember all these devices will sync up so you just pick up the one that makes most sense given what you are doing)

This will create a new category of device inbetween a laptop and an iPod/PDA without cannabilizing either category (I think Apple knows we are all happy buy multiple complementing products from them). The device would continue to enhance the halo effect since it will be most effective when teamed up with a full blown mac.

Anyway, like everyone else I'm excited to hear what it actually is, but this is the device I am after and it would be both new and fun with a calendar connection, and consistent, if not an amalgam of a number of recent rumors.

Credit card at the ready Apple!!

Text Book under iTunes!!!

That would rock!! my hope would be, my school uses iPods so they might use this to!!

kinda far out there

I was thinking along the same lines - although, not in as much detail! Cool idea!

Retro is the New New

I'd like to see Apple come out with a shuffle made of anodized aluminum a la the mini with rounded edges in mini-esque colors too. The mini is basically retro, which makes it fun, and a no-screen mini/shuffle hybrid would be new! . . . ?

Or maybe I need a nap :p

I don't know if anyone pointed this out, as I didn't read the entire thread, but was anyone else reminded of Steve's comment at MacWorld about not being sure if he'd seen any of them before April 1st? Wonder if this is something he was hoping they could get out but didn't want to make any suggestions, just hints. If so, those recent flurry of patents that went through could be an indication that the timing went their way on the patent approvals and design for the new MacTouch. I'd say that's a fun new product.

Why not ask SJ?

I am sure we are all going to try to hit that 1 billionth song as real Apple zealots do of course, so I think we should pledge as MR members to ask SJ what he has up his sleeve next week when he will call one of "us" in the next 2 hours or so. :D

That brings up a question by itself. What the heck would we do with our lives if Apple no longer would exist? And yes, this is not on topic at all.....:p

I agree with your thinking and your vision for the product and how Apple sees the market. Fantastic first post.

hummm ... so true. I remember during a demo of spotlight, Steve typed in paris and then iMac ... then in the paris expo, he revealed the new iMac.

I think there is a hidden message somehow ... maybe iCal will be like a Tivo control.

Though I am hoping for bigger and badder things. Apple cell phone would floor me.

Thanks man, I appreciate the feedback, especially as other 'newbies' have been crushed earlier in the thread:eek:

I really think they have to come out with a new category soon before the iPod starts to wane, and I don't want them to spoil the iPod by putting too much into it. I think this company is too smart for that. SJ has a grand plan, and it's more than the 'son of iPod' I suspect.

I also agree.

So, here it is... The Bluetooth Mac PDA. iCal in the invite is with regard to taking your calendar with you.;)

I sure hope so, mono-white isn't exactly a "fun" color. I really don't want to hear anymore tablet rumors. There is no way that a tablet is coming out next week. For starters it would require an entirely new OS, which will not be coming out until the end of the year. Also, a tablet wouldn't fall into the "fun" category, so much as the "destroy you f@cking world" category.

Why would an Apple "tablet computer" require a different operating system? Just because that's the way Microsoft did it doesn't mean it's "the only way". Even worst, they have Windows, Windows "Tablet Edition" (or whatever) and Windows CE...

Apple, on the other hand, already has Inkwell built-in into OS X. And from all the Apple patents we've seen flying around in the last few days, I'd bet more on an "Apple tablet" or an "Apple PDA" than anything else.

The PDA market is currently dead. Windows CE isn't that interesting and PalmOS got bought or something a few weeks ago. The phone market is too competitive/crowded and the all-in-one phone+PDA don't seem user-friendly and are way too expensive.

If Apple needs to merge the iPod into something, it's video and PDA because IMO the PDA/tablet market is ripe for a takeover.

I'd buy an Apple iPod+Video+PDA+WiFi device without even thinking about it (if the price wasn't too high and it ran OS X - of course it would be a stripped-down version (no terminal, no Apache, etc) but would still be OS X and run the same programs). Imagine: music + video + chat + email + web = Portable Mac, form factor of an iPod... A truly portable device (unlike even a 7" MacBook).

One Billion Songs

I still think this invitiation is to introduce new iPod add-ons. Just look at the iTunes counter. They waited until they knew they would be at a billion before calling the show. Something major to brag about at the show. I can almost hear Jobs. "so you've bought a billions songs..." now it's time to have some "new fun" with them. Just a thought.

Great post. That's the most articulate and though-out statement I've seen in my years lurking on Macrumors.

I had a thought. But it's like a puzzle where you have some of the pieces but can't see how they might fit together...

I read today that there is a great surplus of NAND Flash memory in the world right now. Short story is, manufacturers tricked companies into thinking there would be a shortage, so everyone (including Apple) bougghtt way more than they need.

So what if there's some kind of flash USB or Firewire devices that's a hardware/software combo. Like the iPod Shuffle or Tech Tool Protege? I can't really imagine what it could be, but when I think off Apple's idea of fun I imagine an item that is small, cheap ($89-$149) and inexpensive to produce/distribute.

I can just imagine Steve with a big bowl of Thumb Drives, tossing handfuls of colorful flash applications/storage devices into the air.

Does this fantasy (theory?) spark anyone? Can anyone see some of the pieces of this puzzle that I've missed?

I'm sorry if a came on a bit hostile in my last post. I actually really would love nothing more than to see a mac tablet, and I am sure that we will have one in the near future, but not "next week" near.

Microsoft did create a tablet OS: an embarassingly terrible OS. They basically took windows XP, put it on a tablet and figured it would be ok. When Apple makes their tablet, they're going to do it right, with an OS that ties into the hardware in ways we can only speculate.

Also, all those tablet related patents appearing at the same time, while very suggestive, seem to be too recent to expect Apple to come up with a tablet next week.

Finally, a tablet really is the sort of thing that Apple would save for April 1st; a birthday present of a sort, along with an 'omg! they must be kidding!' April Fools element built in.

I agree with you that the PDA/Tablet market is dead, and Apple is its best hope for a rebirth, but I want Apple to take its time with this one: I for one am willing to wait.

For what it's worth:
I've just spent last night chatting about htis with one of my friends.

I'm putting our call up now, so if we are right we can say 'we told you so' :D

There are many many things as far as we can tell that point to an Apple PDA type device, although it may not be marketed quite like this. Think 'Take your iLife with you'.

Our clues come from things we know, Apple hiring iCal people, the vaio people from sony, lots of patents allowing touch lcd interaction. (There is more...)

Please forgive the lack of flow, just want to get our ideas down..

- iCal is neither 'new' or 'fun'. As much as it may be nothing, planting a giant iCal image in the middle of the event invite is unusual if it doesnt mean something (like the curtians, camera lens and jeans pocket). This device will have iCal, iTunes, iPhoto maybe addressbook.

- Why would you need a click wheel on a tablet pc? The only devices that have click wheels, have small screens with a specific interface, or as with the shuffle - no screen. This device will be ipod like, but with iTunes (like the motorola phone, slim.) 60 odd gb.

- when the ipod was b&w, lest say 2G. Do you think that Apple would have expected it to be as huge as it has been? i expect they would have estimated 1-2 years of domination before creative, sony and the like caught up. Planning for the next generation device would have started sometime then...

Apple have quite smartly pushed manufactures to develop better components. larger capacity HDD, but smaller. better cheaper lcd's, better smaller batteries. none of this came overnight...over a long period, everything needed for the next generation device has been developed already. Tried and tested, made in bulk.

We now see the patents in a different light - the technology is already here, just not in the devices we expect to see them.

Front row has a part here too. Why the focus on better, bigger screens on the ipod if you can play all your content in frontrow? Didnt really make sense until now, if ALL your Mac's have front row and a remote, the ipod is not the centre of you media playing anymore. You dont NEED an ipod. you can use your Mac and FR. Music, video, TV...its all there.

So where does that leave iPod? Bigger and better!

I could go on, but your all bored enough already :) Think, iPod on steroids, all screen. touch screen interface with on-screen clickwheel. iTunes, iCal (focus here, the first Mac you can buy for work, in a windows world. Outlook sync etc), iPhoto (complete with built in iSight, library intergration, slide show when its in the universal dock at work), Addressbook (bluetooth capable, perhaps this will be for phone)

Not only is this 'fun', but it sure would be 'new'!

I dont post here often (in fact this is my 2nd post!), but i thought it was worth adding our prediction;)

maybe they'll release multi-colored ipods. Like a green shuffle, blue nano, etc. I also hope the new intel ibooks come in different colors (black being one of them)
