Now youre picking on TWO newbies here, way to go man, I'm sure theyll never come back now. He did say it was a new product. I'm just thinking that whatever new, fun product is being released will definately HAVE to be by apple.

So I make one joke, then explain it's a joke to another member who took it way too seriously, and now I'm the MacRumors bully? Yikes, I guess there must be a lot of hyper-senstive members in the Forums today...

Having to defend myself for making a harmless joke is silly, so I'm not going to clutter up this thread anymore talking about it.

So, I guess Steve's reality distortion field is real!

It looks like a cardboard box.

Yep, that's only a box, in fact, I know that box, it's sitting on a shelf above my monitor. So the "fun" thing is going to be basically the same box that I got two of my t-shirts from various Apple Stores in after they stopped using the tubes? Kids and cats find boxes "fun," geeks... not so much.

I think it looks a lot like the boxes at the top of this page. Other comments suggest it's a cardboard box hoax, others say it's a bad 3D render.

In any case, I wouldn't want that thing next to my VCR and DVD player... Something made for the living "has to be flat", not a cube.

Nice catch on that box from the Developer's Page on Apple's website. I'm convinced that's where the hoax came from now.

While I agree that component boxes need to be flat to fit in with DVD players, etc. I always liked the Cube. I'm not sure why it didn't last as a design--maybe they could update it. It wouldn't fit in with component boxes, but I would take a hard look at it as a desktop.

OK seeing as everyone else is doing it, my predictions:

Apple iPod speakers of some sort. Then when everyne thinks it is over, a mac mini home entertainment system. I think that this will very much be in the mould of the iPod photo keynote. Just my opinion, for what its worth!

Fun and exciting...

Apple marketing is very sophisticated, and they wouldn't use words like fun and exciting to describe business products. I don't know what to expect, but I know what not to expect...

Universal pro apps (I expect these at NAB, in completely new versions)
PowerMacs (it's just not time, yet)

I don't think it'll be limited to iPod stuff, either...

Fun = Trivial

I think these are going to be some really minor annoucements. When Apple talk fun it generally means trivial. A bit like that application with the new iMacs that takes your photo and allows you to add effects. Fun = trivial. I go along with the previous suggestions of new iPod socks or something along those lines. At most perhaps a new range of coloured iPod Shuffles. I don't think Apple would describe the products I'm waiting for as being fun: eg. wireless mighty mouse, Mac mini with Front Row, a high speed Airport Express with Video Output (for Front Row).

Oh, and did I mention, Fun = Trivial.

Shouldn't such a product be announced April 1st?
not nescesarily... it could be shipping by then or something or they could create a new marketing scheme.

I'd take a "cube Mac mini" (6.5 x 6.5 x 6.5") any day, given that it had a Core Duo processor and a 3.5" Hard Disk. Oh, and a decent GPU with a decent amount of VRAM.

But yeah, as a living room box, it'd make no sense (as much as I like my Gamecube, it looks out of place with all other devices in the living room).

But would Apple send press invitations for trivial products? Don't they usually simply release them on their website?

Wow, it's called a joke, lighten up! ;) Some people have no sense of humor... I would apologize for trying to inject a little humor into the thread, but I'm not sorry for doing it, so I won't. :p

Funny? Who knows. :)

Here are some (feasible) products that I'd like to see Apple release:

1. An iPhone/iPod combo that works with Microsoft Exchange Server. All the business execs that have Blackberrys also have iPods. Why not combine them into one? This will also make business execs even more familiar with Apple products, expanding the halo effect. I work with many of these business execs, and they would love to switch over the MacBook Pros once they worked seamlessly with Exchange. M$ needs to just release Outlook for OS X, and not call it Entourage. Of course, if Apple made a handheld that worked with Exchange, then they'd probably beef up their Mail app to work with it as well, and then we wouldn't even need Outlook.

2. A Mac Mini Entertainment Center. We all know it's coming. Apple has almost all of the puzzle pieces in its hand. Pretty soon it will put them all together and take over the living room. I think they are in the best position out of any company out there, especially with the loyalty that they've gained with the iPod.

Come on, Apple...Do It! Blow us away with these "fun, new products." Part of me holds onto this wish, while the rest of me accepts the fact that they will probably be upgrades. Here's to wishing!

For Me - Fun Is Spelled - HD!

About a year ago (I can't remember the occasion) I remember his Steveness on stage with a Sony CEO...was that when Steve declared the year of HD??? I could be wrong, but I have not seen much to indicate that said year even started... (other than imovie HD)
I know every once in a while a big kafuffle is made about the relationship (or lack thereof) between Sony and Apple...I think it's time to make it happen...how about an Apple HD (consumer) cam. It will be a melding of what currently exists in the Sony HDR-HC1, what is coming with the HDR-HC3 and Apple's clean looking whiteness.

If Steve really wanted to push my fun button, (ew...that sounds sick) this would happen.

Common sense tells me I'm dreaming, but common sense also tells me not to use common sense when guessing at what to expect from a Cupertino announcement.

Yeah, the year of HD. I have a feeling there's a lot more in store for that.

Just as a side note/question: I've been coming to MacRumors.com for five years now, yet I still have that infernal "macrumors newbie" next to my name. How can I get rid of that? I post messages periodically, but I visit the site EVERYDAY, usually multiple times a day, and I'm logged in everytime I do. Ugh.

Feb. 28th, 2006 is Mardi Gras. Coincidence? I think not!

Obviously, they're releasing a new lanyard for the iPods, made of beads instead of plastic. When you put it around someone's neck, they show you their... OOPS.. I've said too much...;)

Sorry this is a late reply, but I need to know: will it only work with flash memory iPods?

:D

Don't want to be a newbie...quit your job and post 10 times a day!

macbook in colour?

Just putting my 2cents in... I remember something about how the ibooks were going to be totally revamped.. when I think of fun I think colour, and seeing as though the macbook is due to be released do you think we might see a return of the coloured ibook? Hopefully annodized metal....!!!

i think there might be some ipod stuff there too.. only time will tell!

been said many times already, but i'll say it again...steve will gush about a billion itunes songs sold, maybe introduce the winner, and then introduce some ipod gadgets like the speakers or stereo or whatever to tell us to buy more songs and enjoy our ipods in an even better way.

nothing more than that...all you guys talking about new 'puters and DVRs are way off.

The promo of "fun new products"' doesn't really inspire me a whole lot. There may be some cool stuff, but it isn't an Intel iBook, 17" MacBook Pro or anything like that. "Fun" just doesn't really describe something like that. You don't target professionals or prosumers with the word "fun". Now a PDA-like device that you interact with mostly by touch - that could be "fun". Especially if it's targeted at the younger set - and includes stuff like wireless connectivity.

Not that I think it'll be anything like that....

I sure hope so, mono-white isn't exactly a "fun" color. I really don't want to hear anymore tablet rumors. There is no way that a tablet is coming out next week. For starters it would require an entirely new OS, which will not be coming out until the end of the year. Also, a tablet wouldn't fall into the "fun" category, so much as the "destroy you f@cking world" category.

Very funny. I just bought my wife the lanyard headphones and she loves them. This would definitely be a fun alternative.
