Even though I just bought a new powerbook, I'll be right pissed with you if they don't update the iBooks.

Makes you wonder what the heck is going on over there, you know?

Doesn't look like it  Why are they waiting for soooo long? All I want is to buy an ibook that is fully compatible with Tiger. (Yes, I want the ripple damnit!)

so another tuesday come and gone....

I've been waiting i'd say about 3 months now, first it was tiger, than the ram problem. I'm almost considering just buying a 12'' and upgrading everything....however, my friend has a 12'' ibook and he claims to go for the 14''. A lot of people claim the 12'' is the real notebook way, but sometimes i wanna see my screen from across the room. Any ideas of the update may come any other day?

p.s. with the update being "past due" why should they really update it at all. It seems a lot of people are going to buy them regardless.

p.p.s. Ever notice on the canadian apple page, under the hardware section, the ibook still claims panther.

Whats the big deal with Tuesday? Why don't you think it will be released tomorrow or anyother day that isn't Tuesday?

Because traditionally and historically, Tuesdays are the days they update hardware.

I fear that you iBook folks may have to wait until Paris. :(

I agree i think you are right.

In Paris we will see a Mac Mini Rev B and a new rev iBook.

I believe sometime in mid september?

I think there is also a show at the end of July when the 4g ipods were released last year....That is when i think they will be released, definatly not as late as september as they would want a new iBook out for the back to school crowd..

ShadoW

That sounds more feasible...however, people who were in my shoes and needed to buy before the $100 rebate expired will be S.O.L unfortunately.

With all the news about Intel, I doubt it's going to be a major upgrade. Which means the upgrades could come out on any Tuesday. Why announce a small speed bump and better graphics card at a conference?

For those interested, Macworld Expo is July 11-14 in Boston http://www.macworldexpo.com/live/20/

We should all plan on meeting there to storm the stage and demand our upgraded iBooks!

Seriously, the new iBooks have to be out by late July/early August for the school shoppers. Wasn't that a big mistake last year with upgrades coming out in October?

i am going to be so gutted if i find out there is no updates before september, i have waited months already.

god, if you are listening, all that stuff i said about not believing in you wasnt true, please do just this for me!

A few of my views on possible update times.
  • It could always happen this week, (when everyone has calmed down over the Intel switch,) but this looks unlikely
  • There is an Apple education event on 28th June so it could be then
  • Apple doesn't need an event to launch a new revision of the iBook - it's not as if it's going to G5 - so it could come any day, that's the big problem with it all. I still think it will be with us by the end of July (in time for the new school/uni year)
  • The MacWorld Expo in Boston is on 11th July so that would make sense, but I don't know if anyone from Apple is registered to be giving a presentation

So, it seems from reading the posts so far that most people are going to continue waiting for the update, whenever that might be.

Is there anyone who decided to just go ahead and buy it since the updates can seemingly never come? I'm actually planning to go ahead and buy it tomorrow since I'm leaving the country Tuesday.

Does anyone think that even if it were to get updated in about 6 days, if the new revisions would even be available right away?

I guess no vram ripple for me, but I think I'll be happy since it will be cheap overall.

(snip)

I bought mine about 20 minutes ago. I'm tired of waiting, and I've been without a laptop for about 2 months now, and I can't go any longer. I need to be able to go to the library and get some research done. So, as of 3:45 this afternoon, I am officially a "switcher." I figured that whatever updates they do now, it's not going to be anything spectacular. In fact, I had been planning on a powerbook with superdrive, I decided to go with the iBook instead, and next year, I'll get a mini w/ superdrive once the new "mactels" come out.

Those two ideas sound good to me, especially the education event, since June 28th is a Tuesday :D

We shall see...

The sooner the better

It seems to me that there are hundreds of people on this site alone who are waiting for iBook updates. I really hope they come soon. I will definitely wait until they are updated to buy mine, hopefully this month or at least July. I think it's pretty likely that Apple will update them in June or July. I also don't think Apple has to worry about the sales of the PowerBooks going down, because those should be updated within a few months after the iBooks. Considering that there are so many people waiting for iBook updates, I think Apple sales will rapidly go up when they're updated. This will be my first Mac, and I am very excited!!

Yeah, I could have bought the ibook at the same price I was getting it at about a month ago and decided to become a 'switcher' then. I guess the intel annoucnement changes things but I figure I can milk a good 3 yrs (w/ the applecare) from this ibook and will be overall happy. And yeah, since they didn't announce anything at WWDC, I figure if anything it will be a speed bump (proc, 512 ram, VRAM - which i think it the most important at 64mb), and MAYBE a hd bump but since I can't afford to wait, I'm gonna just go ahead and buy it (12" combo).

Seems to me like the perfect time to buy an ibook is when the next update/bump is released (assuming that to be sometime this Summer).

My rationale is that this will almost certainly be the last incarnation of the ibook before the intel switch sometime in late 2006 or early 2007. Thus, the SECOND version of the new "intel ibook" could be expected towards the end of 2007 or in early 2008. Therefore someone buying an ibook now could reasonably expect to upgrade in Summer 2008 to a new machine with the transition glitches addressed.

The ibook you buy now will be the ultimate incarnation of a successful machine and the laptop you buy to replace it in 2008 will be a well reviewed and established product. Of course should you find you don't need to upgrade your ibook in 2008 so much the better!

This Apple education event sounds like a good date to me. It is on a tuesday as someone said already but it is also 3 days after the $100 dollar rebate ends (June 25th). Plus it is an education event... iBooks are probably purchased mostly by students anyways.

Here's a good plan. If the ibook/pbook update happens to be June 28. Order you ibook sometime this week or preferably next week. That way you have it secure and ready to use. Just look at the shipping dates a week before the education event on the apple website either it will be delayed indicating an update is comming or not meaning no update. So if there is an update you can easily return your ibook within 14 days in exchange for a new one if it hasnt been opened or if you already opened it pay a 10% restocking fee, in which you can say that was the extra cost of an update. And also you can take advangtage of the $100 apple edu rebate so the 10% restocking fee wont be merely as much maybe $10-$20 for an upgrade.
