so the only thing that will change with the iBook is possibly processor and RAM? no cosmetic changes will be implemented, right?

Never say never, but it looks like they will leave the case as it is or make a very minor cosmetic change to freshen it up, i doubt there will be a major cosmetic overhaul...
SHadoW

I'm waiting for the speed bump to buy the ibook myself, i cant get myself too buy an almost 1 year old book (specs).

I don't expect any mayor changes, because i expect an intel based ibook very early next year. I think they will probably bump cpu speeds just a bit and an extra strip of 256... Might also be free BT or increase HD to 40GB/60GB

All other things will require a change in MB layout and that will be much more expensive than a slight bump in cpu speed. Plus giving it a better vga would put the new ibook way into the 12" powerbook territory. And it already is so close...

I just thought I should mention this.

Apple held an event back in October 2004 similar to the one that has been slated for the first week of July. At that event, they announced the iPod photo. Following that, they had a quiet update of the iBooks before the end of the month. There could be a repeat of last year and have a quiet iBook update following the event coming up.

What do you guys think?

I think there won't be any iBook update until the Powerbooks get updated as well. My best bet is that this will be in october - the last G4 update for both product lines. This will be a long way for the then about one year old iBook, but Apple did this to another bottom line product (emac) just a few month ago..

Sad but true as I also liked to get a new iBook..

hf, hans

If the Ibooks are not updated by Monday or Tuesday of next week, is it safe to assume that the IBooks will not be updated during this year's student buying season? (ie. Pre-September)

I don't remember the exact deals of it other than Apple did exactly what they are doing now back in October (notifying media stations to expect product announcements soon), and thats when they announced the iPod photo. And within a week or 2, the iBook also had a quiet update. They might be planning to do this and release it just in time for the school buying season.

But lizard79 brings up a good point with the PowerBook-iBook gap, and what they did to the eMacs up until recently.

I think we're at the point where you might as well get one of the current offerings. They are a great value and work just fine. The only thing you won't get is the water drop effect in Dashboard, and once you have all your widgets set up the way you like them, you won't miss the effect because you'll be too busy actually using the widgets and OS X itself.

My friend recently ordered her iBook 12" a couple days ago because she couldn't wait any longer. I think that was a great idea because no matter how you look at it, something newer will always come out whether its now, next Tuesday, next month, or next year; what really matters is how much you appreciate what you get. On top of that, if Apple was meaning to update the iBooks in the very near future, we would have had some recent rumors by now to support it. The only thing that even could be a possibility for an update would be the July 7th event, though its almost surely going to be iPod + iTunes only.

For those of you who really want an iBook and don't want to wait much longer, just get one. Again, their great machines, and will serve you well. If want to keep waiting, I wouldn't wait much longer after July 7th, and I surely wouldn't wait past July. Plus, you always have the option of a PowerBook 12" if you really really want that water drop effect .

All in all, at this point, we are beating an already dead horse that just needs to be buried (or cremated, which ever you prefer  :p ).

Apple will not be satisfied until this thread has 1000 posts!!!!!

The iBook-Powerbook gap arguement is pretty weak. They've been closer before. And they're not THAT close.

In Australia the iBook is $1600 and Powerbook Superdrive $2750. To bring the iBook to Powerbook SD standards with RAM, HD and an external DVD burner, the iBook set-up comes out at about AU$200 - AU$300 cheaper. That extra money gets all the perks of the Powerbook. Touchpad, graphics, inputs, processor etc.

What would be more illogical if boosting the iBook to Powerbook standards left the iBook costing more. Unfortunately working this out has made me question whether I should actually get a Powerbook. I'm changing daily!!

Backlit keyboard (not 12"), touchpad two finger move, screen spanning, FW800, gigabit ethernet (not 12"), better audio, bigger screen pixels...

I'd put big bucks on the touch pad. I thought they were all gimmicky until I used a friend's PC with a similar set-up and they're excellent. A double tap = double click. Brilliant! I hate mice.

Might mean something... might not...

Amazon in the uk have put limited availability for ALL the ibook range
http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos...book&nsp=GoGo&sz=10&pg=7/202-3903705-7938245 [check out the following page as well]

In the UK amazon just sits as the middleman between the customer and apple. In other words Apple could be running short of ibooks :)

They're out of stock now, apart from a couple of 14" iBook SDs and some used iBooks.

Probably just a late delivery :(

BYE APPLE!

I decided to screw the damn Apple and stop waiting for the iBook. Quick comparision with iBook against other low-end (sub 1000€) laptops on the market finally did it. For 800 euros I'd get 512 ram, 64 megs graphs, dvd-burner, 15,4" display and some extra usb & candy. Less battery time, portability and usability is the price but who cares? I'm going to put Fedora on it anyways and use it as desktop replacement.

I needed a cheap laptop now, but I'd rather pick one with some more advanced technology.

the new ibook

i have been waiting for a bit to buy a new ibook because of the possible upgrade soon. i ran into a friend of mine i hadnt talked to in a while who works for an apple at his school (and was the first guy to set foot in apples store in london). his boss told him to expect some sort of something new as of tuesday and he thought it would be an ibook update. i know many people already beleive it to be true and this is second hand gossip, but maybe it adds some validity......... maybe.

How is running OSX on PearPC working out for ya?

now comes the question...

The good thing about reading all these rumors sites is that I am becoming so much better informed about computers! Just today I learned about spanning.

One of the things I found out was about the possibility of there being another Cram and Jam sale this summer. Which makes me wonder....

IF (and what a big IF) Apple finally gives us on Tuesday the ibook update we've all been waiting so long for, who of you guys is going to wait for the (possible) Cram and Jam special to get the huge discount on the iPod????

And has anybody else here given themselves a deadline? I am moving abroad so I guess I have about a month and after that, sony vaio or toshiba it is.

For those of you in Europe, are Apple computers pretty common there?

Once the iBooks are updated (assuming it is this coming week or early July), I am almost definitely not waiting for Cram and Jam, because after waiting this long already, I won't be able to wait any longer!

last year, the Cram and Jam promo excluded the 12' iBook and the mini. do you think that this is going to be the same situation? if so, i guess i wouldnt wait, since i want the 12' iBook.

You can hit me if I'm wrong, but I believe it only disallowed the 12" CD-rom, the 12" iBook combo was still in the game

so if you're gonna go with that $50 upgrade you're in the clear... assuming C & J happens this year
