even the powerbooks don't have superdrives standard across the line
what's SMS?
BT 2.0 would be most likely be available across the line, not just on the top end models

for these 3 reasons, i highly doubt the information is accurate

Well said. No Mac has Superdrives standard accross the line. There is no such thing as "high end model" Mac laptops. They are just different sizes and you make them "higher end" by customizing them and adding more stuff, but they are still the same model number. And why would Apple rather go for the additional costs of putting in superdrives rather than just upgrading the graphics and adding Bluetooth 2.0 as standard?

I think apple should include this in the new ibook!

I've noticed a lot of you own or want the 12" laptops. That size just seemed so tiny, at the Apple store! It is, I have to agree, very cute, light, and portable.
Do you 12" screen owners use your laptop as your primary computer, or do the majority of you have a desktop or monitor which you use when at home?

My laptop is going to be, at least for now, my only computer. If the 12" aren't that bad, maybe I should pull a cooknwitha and go to the powerbook side of the Force.

hummmmm.......

Why 1280 x 960? Why not 1280 x 720?

1280x720 is a resoloution for widescreen aspect ratio. It wont "fit" the current square shape of the iBooks. 1280x960 is a normal (squarish) 4:3 ratio. Since I doubt Apple is going to change the form factor to widescreen until the Intel transition, if they were going to up the resoloution on the 14" iBook, they would have to use a normal 4:3 ratio resolution.

Yes, come to the Powerbook side! :)

To answer your question, yes, my 12" PB is my primary computer (although i still have an old 12" Sony Vaio to get rid of). I generally use mine whilst lying on the sofa so no, i don't plug in to an external monitor. I've always favoured smaller notebooks as they are far more comfortable when using them in 'lap' mode and obviously extremely portable too. I also had a 12" Thinkpad for work until they recently swapped it for a nasty 14 or 15 inch model :( i find that far too big and it's so heavy to lug to the office (also doesn't fit in my lovely little STM bag).

The screen size suits me just fine. The only time I have noticed that I could do with a little extra space is when using Dashboard because you can't resize the widgets and I've been downloading too many!

...and because JonMaker wants MORE PIXELS! I don't want to be forced to do the spanning hack right out of the box. 1024x768 was crappy five years ago.

Besides, this will give the 14" a fighting chance for my money.

Please hurry up! I don't want to be forced to use my five year old Dull as my primary machine!

OMG!
you were one of the original "waiter"s for the iBook i think...
if you've made the "other" switch (iBook to powerbook), i might need to question my own resolve...

My first post of this mammoth thread was #27. Oh how long ago that seems!

This was my logic for the the switch to a Powerbook. I want a laptop to replace my G4 iMac, not compliment it. So it needed to do everything. Here is how my sums worked out:

Powerbook 12" Superdrive 100GB HD= AU$2799
iBook 12" = AU$1599

Then with my planned upgrades to the iBook:
1GB RAM = $200
100GB HD @ 5400rpm + installation = $400
External DVD Burner = $300

Bringing the total of iBook to $2499. So I thought, for an extra $300 I could get a Powerbook. More inputs, more power, more graphic power and more pretty :D

Admittedtly I'll order a 1GB stick from crucial ($250) so it's still costing more (now add carry bag and Airport Express) but when it comes down to it, what's a few more hundred dollars when I use a computer many hours every day for work and play and plan to keep it for 3 years.

One of my main concerns was the strength of the case of the Powerbook but I went down to the local Apple Reseller during my lunch break yesterday and had a play around on one. I fell in love. Plus, treat it well and it will be fine. Accidents can happen but the odd small dent and scratch might add character. Plus they're not made out of butter. They're not THAT fragile.

My order is now "processing" and I hope to have it within the next two weeks. Very excited!! I haven't had the "new Apple experience" since September 2002.

It's currently 10:40 BST and I can't get onto:

http://www.apple.com/uk/thestore/

It's just saying: Waiting for metrics.apple.com...

Maybe they're updating their web site store to show new iBooks!!!!!!

Maybe I'm just getting desperate.

I've just seen a pig fly past my window with an apple logo on its back!!

Sorry, I can get into all the stores, so no new iBooks (yet...)

Online Stores usually close around 14.00-15.00 GMT when new products are launched.
