Well, I have nearly reached the time where I must buy a laptop. I know some will say, just wait another 2-3 weeks and they will have been upgraded!, but I been hearing such statements since april/may. In any case, I'm leaning towards buying a dell. I somehow can't get myself to buy the ibook in its current state; it feels like I would be paying more for less.

The day I order: 12th of July, if no update by then.. well looks like no mac for me. :(

Time to defect to Dell?

I too have been tempted by the Dell Side (especially a few weeks ago when they were running adds on Hotmail offering laptops for about $800). But after reading a Macrumors thread on the topic, I'm still planning on a mac. Dells are tempting because of price, speed, and (so I've heard) display. However, I am not a geek (would that I were!) and need a machine that I can depend on. The current ibook might be old, but at least it's dependable. It's the same reason I drive a used Subaru instead of a new Suzuki. Sure I was tempted by low price and the lure of a brand new car, but in the end I realized that that new car would soon be outdated itself, so I might as well start with a higher quality used vehicle. Perhaps a Dell will work for you (I don't know your needs or skills). But for me the reliability, ease of use, and freedom from viruses and other PC stupidity outweigh the drawback of older technology. Yeah, I wish they'd just update the damn things already, but if they don't by the time I can't wait anymore, I'll probably just go ahead and buy.

But is all the tons of viruses, spyware, adaware, malware and everything else... worth it.

Is using the Windows Explorer worth it?

Is having all your personal, not able to be recovered files deleted due to a trojan horse/virus worth it?

Yeah you save a buck but with files being deleted magically, due to viruses... IMO It's not worth it. ;)
IMO ... nope to all those questions, and I'm not even starting naming everything that is wrong with Windows.

Yeah, you could back up M$ saying that Apple has viruses too, but, really, if you have a Mac... have you ever had to worry about ANY of those things. ;)

Nope... period.

I'll be the first to admit that Windows and viruses/malware/adware etc. are a pain in the butt. However, I've owned PCs for over eight years and never had a serious problem with viruses. If you're safe and know how to protect your PC, it really is almost never an issue.

That being said, I think it's better to go with the Apple laptops. Their physical durability can't be beat, and is definitely worth the price difference. I doubt a Dell laptop would last as long. And having the piece-of-mind to not have EVER have to worry about viruses is pretty cool...

Sure you can buy a Dell. I mean they are tempting because of the cost and the coupons circulating the net like 30% off and $750 off $1499 but OSX is so much better. My bro has a Dell Inspiron 8600 w/1.4 GHz Pentium M and sis has Inspiron 5150 w/3.2GHz Mobile P4. Sis's which is almost 2 years old has had Mobo replaced twice and fan, CPU, and DVD/CD-RW drive replace once. I use Panther on eMacs at my college's library and find the user interface so much cleaner. I think that Apple's are worth the cost. 15" PB is going to be my new friend in 2 months.

Yeah, hell I have 3 PCs and have never had to format the HD and I don't even have virus/spyware/adaware protection... I just know how to use a computer... the RIGHT way (not saying there is a "right" way)

But just not having to worry about those is just awesome ;) :p

So... don't waste your money, don't get a Dell... it'll break and all the other things I've said before will most likely happen. yeah, if you need a iBook/PowerBook NOW then get it. Yeah, it's a little bit out dated but it still does wonders, and if you can hold off, just wait till the next release.

Thats just my two cents.

I'm with you 100%, though I might not last till the 12th, I've already been waiting since January.

...

I had an 800mhz G3 ibook, which I sold in january waiting for an update. I love Apple etc, and my ibook worked fine (but too slow). I have been waiting for the update, but I can't wait any longer. Buying the current ibook is basically to get nearly the same hardware I got in 2002. Same hard drive size. only 256 ram, which means extra expense to upgrade, the same lame screen and the same video card. Not worth it, in my opinion. For the same cost you can get a toshiba with 80 gig hard drive, 512 ram, dvd burner and a much better brighter screen. Yes, XP is ugly etc, but it gets the job done. I wish I could wait longer, but I cant wait until September 24.

Simple answer to the iBook dilemma is to step up to the PowerBook. That is what I am planning on getting as my first Mac: 15" PB.

does anyone think that the updated ibooks will support dvi? that's my main reason for not buying an iBook. (i want to buy the 20in ACD with it)

Thanks for the advice. Please PM me for my address so that you can send me the $500 difference. Thanks.

The PB was last updated in January so that's already 6 months. The iBook hasn't been updated in 9 months, so the 3 month difference and $500 is quite a large difference. I would wait for iBooks because it should be arriving very soon now.

I bought an iBook in it's current state... + 60GB HD and Bluetooth, so it's like the base Powerbook now but 80% as fast and no DVI output and only 32MB video card... the only reason I'd go for the PB is the 64MB video but oh well. it only costed $1411 and will do everything I need it to do, no complaints here... if you don't like the iBook the way it is stop waiting, stop complaining, get the PB. But if you've decided that the iBook is good for you the way it is now, buy it now...

A very subtle hint that something maybe coming in the next few days is the 500 million countdown ticker on the Apple homepage. Notice that it doesn't consume the whole top portion of the page like in the past. It's at the bottom below the Hot News ticker. This leads me to believe that some other product that is more important Apple will want to use that big open top space for.

The earnings call is next week. I can't imagine that Apple will go without updating iBooks just for the simple fact that analysts will question it, and it will stick out like a sore thumb. But who knows, both of these thoughts may just be frivolous.

I've been folling this ibook thread/update now for i'd say hmmm,,,,4-5 months. Anyway, I'm usually one for instant pleasure, but i've been holding off. ANYWAY, when i checked the canadian apple store, (i'm from canada) I notice the shipping time for the ibook is now 5-7 business days, where I swear 2 days ago it was only 2-4 ...does this mean something?????

P.S. I called my local bestbuy to see what ibooks they had in stock, they said they had not recieved a shipment of them in over a month and that the new stock should be arriving tomorrow (wednesday) night....so does this mean something?????

I know that nobody is psychic but...

I was wondering if it would be probable (or even possible?) that the new iBook be lighter in weight?

It is definatly a possibility as i think it is likely they will slightly re-design the iBook in its next revision....

I think we'll see something Thursday...actually I'm hoping we see something.

I hope Apple remembers they still are a computer company and not just a music store. :D

Just to add fuel to this thread...

Apple usually release products on a tuesday, right? And tuesday is the second day of a working week, right? So presumably on mondays they get everything ready... their webstore, their site, etc etc...

Today, wednesday, is the second day of this week... because of July 4th holiday. Therefore, could we see updates today? :p

Or.. we just have to wait a day until tomorrow! I'm telling you now, though, if it's just iPod phones... I'm getting a dell.

Sometimes I wonder. Considering the hype surrounding the Ipod. Something I have little to no interest in. Nothing more than an expensive toy/want...anyways I enjoy radio. Never know what they are going to play next.

Who knows? In 10 years from now, perhaps Apple will be the music company that made computers a long time ago? (Like Nokia is the phone company that made rubber boots before they got into the phone business).

But then, that's not realistic. The iPod boom won't last that long.
