They just have to be upgraded tomorow! To long of a wait and Apple would be kind of being a "scumbag" for not updating the iBooks before School starts, tons of schools use the iBooks for there computers, and Apple to update them AFTER school starts would just be foolish IMO.

I agree, they should update them so kids can have them before school. But that's not what happened last year. Wasn't it an October upgrade?

I would love to know who at Apple is in charge of the upgrade. Business sense says to have products ready before the start of school. They will LOOSE customers if they wait until after the school year starts.

Waiting inpatiently for a new iBook for 6 months now...

I've been waiting since March, now I'm looking for a PowerBook because of this wait, it's not like i'm going to be getting a PowerBook anytime soon but with this wait, I'm going PowerBook, unless they do a pretty good job updating the iBooks.

When the new ibooks do come out, I envision a celebration unlike any other in history. Everyone will dance in the streets. Bars will be packed with people celebrating their new purchase. It will be like the entire world just won the superbowl, and yes, we will all go to Disneyland.

Man, I have been waiting for an ibook for way too long. Let's get this party started.

Haha, that will SO be me!!

To all those waiting for an new iBook, what will you do if Apple doesn't update them this week? To be honest, an update this week is highly unlikely in my opinion.

forgive me for raining on our collective parade, but our getting an update on the iBook anytime soon assumes a number of things : 1) Apple perceives that the marketplace will demand it 2) their supply of the present models is low enough that they won't be stuck with units they can't move without hurting their margins 3) they really have something "substantial" to offer as an upgrade 4) they won't narrow the performance margin between the iBook and the Powerbooks to the degree that they hurt their sales in the Powerbook category.

1) positive: Apple has created an "upgrade jones" among its followers. negative: what we want and they see is not the same thing.
2) positive: there are some after-the-upgrade bargin hunters. negative - these people are relatively few and far between.
3) positive: computer wanna-be-geeks think that virtually any upgrade is earth-shattering. negative: Apple will only upgrade when they can either preserve or increase their profits. this means upgrades can't cost them more unless they can either raise the price or make up the $ in something else.
4) postive: improving the iBook puts pressure on them to improve the Powerbook. negative: eventually they are going to hit a (temporary) ceiling where they can't improve the Powerbook without completely redesigning it or abandonning the concept. once that happens the iBook, too, will stop improving or be absorbed into the Powerbook. (Look at what just happened with the iPod.)

forgive me if i seem pessimistic. i am not. however, i offer two suggestions: a) try to think outside the box ... how can we consumers become innovative in our thinking about computers? b) become a wiser consumer - save your $ for a rainy day and buy something only when you love it and absolutely NEED it.

best wishes.

From Amazon.com on the iBook 14" Combo page:

Availability: Usually ships within 24 hours
Only 5 left in stock--order soon (more on the way).

Could this mean something?

Probably means what it sais it means but if not it could well be a sign of an update...

Although i think apple will hold out as long as they can before releasing any new iBooks that could be as long as august/september time...

ShadOW

I'm coming round to the idea of buying the 12" how it is. However due to the timing of my holiday, it seems pointless to order when i'm away so I am going to have to wait until at least the start of august, and having waited that long I may well change my mind and wait for the update. Just update it soon Apple!!!

Which schools?

My school session starts this Monday. Four days of holiday break left for me.

Hmm, well, I think that means Amazon.com has five 14" Combo iBooks left in stock that usually ship within 24 hours of ordering. Order soon to get one of those five, even though more are supposedly on the way.

That "Only X left in stock--order soon (more on the way)" statement is standard on nearly every Amazon page. So who knows if more are really on the way or not.

I've waited long enough, if the iBook isn't updated tomorrow then i'm ordering the current one. To be honest the update to the ibook isn't going to be earth shattering when it comes anyway. The current ibook is plenty fast enough anyway and i'd definately not going to miss that ripple effect in dashboard.

So......... does anyone know what is this media event happening tomorrow? And what time it will happen?

Just so I know when to start checking the website frantically.

<sigh> I really don't know what I'll do if they don't update tomorrow. I know the current iBook is probably a great computer as is, but the idea of spending that much money for a computer whose makers don't care enough about it to optimize its performance with its latest OS.... I don't think my stubborness will let me do it! The way I feel it, if Apple doesn't give a crap about keeping the specs on their hardware up to speed with its software, why should I give them my business?

My $1400 dollars were just too hard to earn...

Look guys, it just has to happen! If Apple don't many schools are going to buy Dell. If Apple don't upgrade, many students are going to buy dell (me included possibly as they are much more powerful and cheaper than iBooks anyway).

I want an iBook I don't want a Dell. Come on Apple. Tomorrow or i'm custom building my Inspiron 6000 widescreen amazing resolution Dell laptop with X300 graphics..

Huh. Sorta like the party at the unveiling of Deep Thought's answer to the Ultimate Question. And we all know how that turned out. (If you don't, run to the bookstore and buy The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy stat.)

If all they have to announce tomorrow is a Motorola phone that has iTunes installed, I'm afraid that I'm going to have to recommend that my Mum give her £1300 to Mr Dell. Mr Jobs is going to loose out, but then he's got plenty of cash, so he probably doesn't really care.
