Price drop?

If Apple won't update the ibooks they could at least give us a price drop before school starts, I would buy one then.

My guess why there are no updates is pretty simple:
Apple has a roadmap that clearly states when the next revisions are coming and my guess is that the revision that comes after the next one is pretty far away --> at WWDC 2006.

This update will be the last PPC revision. The next will be a completly new iBook, new Chips new design and released summer 2006.

In order not to make the next cycle MUCH too long they wait this time to have to equal long cycles.

just my guess

You are most probably correct, what you said was exactly what i was thinking of the whole iBook debacle...

Actually i hope that they don't come out with the iBooks, because then what else will i do with my time at work besides checking this thread so often.............oh who am i kidding, come out with the update pllllleeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaasssssssssseeeeeeeeeeeee.

Why would new iBooks make this thread obsolete? It's timeless! :D

But there is nothing stopping them at least having a small update! When it comes to notebooks Apple stopped leading the market a long time ago, they should start reacting to market conditions.

What wrong with a major bump every year, and reactionary specification changes every 3 months? Argh!

So with the last update being mid-October, and the next update being (let's say) end July 2006, the mid-point would be ... precisely September 9th.

Just in time for Paris.

absolutly true..
and by then the powerbooks will als need an update and the gap between the two lines will stay constant...

well - so 2,5 months to wait...
at least I can spend my summer without being distracted by a new electronic toy..
cheers

I think your guess is almost certainly correct. If the ibook is going to stay the same for a while, if I were apple, I would either (a) cut the price or (b) crack open the ones in stock and put in another 256 of RAM. They need to do something.

"hey, let's update our out-of-date-at-launch hardware only once a year"

something went wrong at Apple. Why no bump to 512MB at the very least recently? bah. *loses faith*

They did, it's called the "Student Union" promo.

Fair enough; I don't need an iPod though, so if it was a straight rebate that I could use for my iBook, I'd consider it. As it stands, to make this work for me, I need to find someone to buy my 'free' iPod for the rebate to be useful for me.

I agree, plus:

1 - current narrow gap between PowerBook and iBook,
2 - need to move the plenty of iBook product remaining (guessing),
3 - average consumer views current specs as adequate,

are all working to "conspire" against an iBook update before Sept.

A strategy to release updated models AFTER the back to school season makes a lot of sense to me. You get to clear out all existing models with a promotional offer (free ipod) as you ramp up production on the new model late in the buying season. Most people will be fine with existing iBook; most keeners will end up waiting for new model (amidst much grumbling and, admittedly, a few lost sales to PC).

still lovin my new iBook (purchased Jul 5)

:( :( :( :( :(

Well the iBook I'm going to get when it get's updated will sound something like this:

iBook 14" 1.33GHz Combo [updated proccesor, hopefully]
Keyboard & Mac OS X
Bluetooth Module
80GB Ultra ATA drive
Combo drive (DVD-ROM/CD-RW)
AirPort Extreme Card
512MB DDR266 (256MB built-in & 256MB SO-DIMM)
Radeon 9200 32MB VRAM [updated graphics, hopefully]

I can't wait. I have a little more than half the money for it. (total w/ tax $1440.75)

I thought I heard that the announcement would happen at 11 a.m. pacific time. It's only 9 pacific right?

Just wait a bit, then we can be sure. If not now, then the update won't happen till september.

EDIT: I just heard that the event's been cancelled, or is in now way related to any hardware updates. Woops.

guys historically apple gives like a week or two in rumors and stories to show if there will be any updates.

i don't think it will be next tuesday either.

Anybody work at Best Buy? Were those "shipments" of iBooks that came in last night actually just restocking the stores? LOL.

For those who are waiting, just hang in there! I sure am. iBook-purchasers-to-be Anonymous, anyone? There's always next Tuesday though.

why do you think they've been taking so long to update the ibooks?

there will be no new form factor. only some speed bumps, and extra useless features.

only reason why they haven't updated it in such a long time is because there is no point when the mactels are coming out.

if i were you all, just get the powerbooks. a couple hundred more, but these computers are nicer, better keyboards, sexier, modern.

difference between 12 inch ibook and powerbook is like 300 dolalrs or so. it's definitely worth it to buy the powerbook.

that's why i'm getting it.

I'm not waiting any longer. Today's the day I get my new iBook and iPod.

It's been fun hanging here, though!

Alright! I got mine earlier this week. Who else is with us?!

£350 price difference between iBook and Powerbook here in the UK, thats alot of money.

i'm with you, if the updated ibook when it eventually arrives is earth shattering then I can always sell this ibook on ebay for very little loss.

of course it won't be earth shattering, so i'm not really sure its worth the hassle waiting.

anyway i'm putting my order in tomorrow for a 12" ibook with 80 GB HD

i really don't like the ripple effect in dashboard so i'm not going to miss that at all

There is a lot of speculation today that the Powerbook could go to a G5 with this processor story from Japan. If the PB does go to G5, would this create enough room between the ibook and the powerbook so that the Ibooks could be updated as well? Forgive me, but I am nearly illiterate when it comes to computers

wait?
where were the bells and whistles? what was the big announcement?
did i blink?
@#?>$%. think i'm really just going to get the powerbook instead...tuesday my new last deadline.
