If the iBooks weren't going to be updated until october then we would have seen at least the video card increased to 64MB if nothing else (along with eMacs and iMacs.) The fact that they didn't get this indicates to me that they will be updated at/around WWDC. If they had received a small bump and then were updated again at WWDC, then there would have been lots of complaints from buyers who thought they were cheated by Apple.

How can they update the iBook before they update the PB? iBooks are already at 1.2/1.33 ghz and PBs are at 1.5/1.66 ghz. You can't have the iBook equal to the PB. Cosmic destruction would be unleashed. Man's civilization is cast in ruin.

But wait... a strange new world rises from the old. A world of savagery, super science, and sorcery.... (Can anyone name the show?)

I'm getting awfully tired of seeing a best-selling line crippled so a less selling, more expensive line doesn't look ******.

No, but it would kick arse if James Earl Jones would have recited all that. I'd be like

Hello, I'm brand new around here. :)

I am hoping to switch to Mac very soon as have been so sick of Windows for a while now, plus i need to upgrade my current laptop anyway. I think i'm going for a 12 inch iBook as it's just for home use so don't think i need the full power of the PowerBook. Have been watching this forum for a few weeks now and there seems to be a lot of speculation about upcoming updates to the iBook line.

Why does everyone seem to think it will happen on a Tuesday??!! Is this the usual iBook update day? Can't be an Apple thing unless the details in the Buyer's Guide on this site are wrong, as according to that the Powerbook was last updated on a Monday and other products on a Wednesday. Am I missing something here? (sorry am a complete mac newbie!)

I hope they announce this update very soon. I want one asap but I'm waiting because i would end up spending extra money to update various components that perhaps would come as standard on the next model. E.g. a 30 gig hard disk really isn't sufficient by today's standards. The additional RAM i would purchase elsewhere e.g. Crucial, but again, 256MB as standard isn't very much so perhaps they will up this to 512 in the next revision?

- would be nice if they could also put it on a diet as it does seem rather heavy and chunky compared to a lot of current pc notebooks :D

dietcokevanilla,
even though i'm pretty new here as well, let me welcome you... you'll find that being part of this community is amazing, and that visiting this site can simultaneously be a resource and entertaining.

Usually Tuesdays are the announcement day for updates and new products.

So, i'll join everyone in another disappointing tuesday without updated ibooks, though i wasn't really expecting it to happen this tuesday, i feel it'll happen at wwdc... i just can't believe that apple would try to capitalize on the tiger euphoria and back to school sales by releasing now as opposed to september/october.

anyway, it's all conjecture, but then again we are in macrumors.

The reason people always think updates will be on tuesday is beacuase apple updates there product lines on tuesday normally. I agree the base model 30gb HD is pretty slim i think all models should have 60gb as standard to keep up with technology today.

Thanks guys, i'll keep checking back every Tuesday then.

Now i wish i'd just bought it back in October as i have been thinking about switching since about then - i just had too many other expenses at the time. And now because of all this speculation and the fact that according to history this is the longest time between updates, i am waiting instead of just buying. It's all very frustrating!

The only other thing that bothers me about Mac notebooks (apart from the chunkiness) is they seem to call the smaller models 'basic' or 'entry level' - ??
Why, just because it has a screen a couple of inches smaller than the other models should it be labelled as basic and not have the same hardware spec available? (the processor difference, the hard disk difference, superdrive etc). I want a well-featured machine in a small, easily portable casing!

thats why theres BTO (built to order) machines

:D I'm on a 2 month business trip to Japan and Korea. If Ibook releases at WWDC, how long would it take for them to reach Asia? Would it be better for me to buy it when I get back to the US?

Also, I have a 1 gig ram chip that I was using on a 1.5 12" powerbook.... will it work on the new Ibook?

The iBooks and PowerBook share the same kind of RAM, for several revisions now actually, so it should work, but don't quote me on that.

more and more i'm leaning towards the idea that ibooks and powerbooks will be updated at WWDC for one reason or another. ibooks need new video cards and i think they might see a display update, as well as cpu bumb. the powerbooks are a bit trickier to judge but i think apple might update their displays and cpu so there is an acceptable difference between ibook and powerbook.

Damn! So now I have to eat my words.

 I am officially, the very distant relative of a monkey. There, I said it.

That`s for those of you who read my post on another thred that predicted the ibook would be updated on the 24th.

For those of you that haven`t read it... uhhhh, look out behind you, there`s a giant gorilla holding a beautiful fair maiden! I`m serious!

Panther or Tiger?

Hi all,
Here is another bit to tell us an ibook update is imminent.

Let’s start with the most important component: Mac OS X version 10.3 Panther. Apple’s next-generation operating system creates a fast and extremely stable foundation for all your computing activities. Panther supports the same standards used in Windows and Microsoft-specific technologies, so you can share files with PC-using friends and colleagues, share the same network, even share the same peripherals, including printers, scanners and cameras. At home, at work or in the classroom, Panther lets your iBook G4 fit in perfectly.

That is from apples software specs for the ibook. If they are going to upgrade, why bother updating their specs on the site, they are only going to have to do it again very soon. The ibooks come with tiger, so they just never got around to updating that part of their website. It is the same with the Powerbook.

Ok, that was just my impression of all that.

Vale!

EDIT: forgot to sum up, if Apple updated a product, it has 10.4 listed in its software section, if it wasn't updated, it has 10.3. Makes you think doesn't it?

I had noticed the same thing on with the software. But I thought they would have fixed it a long time ago too! It's now been almost a month so, if anything, it looks sloppy from Apple.

All this speculating is driving me mad!!

At this point, I'm just sitting back and waiting to see what happens. I'm hoping they update at or before WWDC, because a friend of mine wants to get an iBook, but she needs to order it before or by June 10th. She really wants the newer one, so that she can get full Tiger support, but on June 10th, whatever they have, she'll take it at this point.

chasingapple -
You have any more tidbits for us to salivate on?
I'm guessing its wwdc or bust at this point?

How long will we have to wait

Yes I think we are at the point where its either going to be at WWDC or :shakes head: Mac Expo Paris in September.

I believe that would be rather negligent of apple to leave it that long. However I believe that is a worse case senario.

WWDC and a new form factor would be nice. I doubt that they would annouce a speed bump at WWDC.

You know, Im betting if they do upgrade the GPU, it'll probably be the Gofx 5200. I can't see why the iBook would get an ATI 9600 when even the lower pb's don't get them.

Surely that's a sidegrade at best? NVidia's 5200 series generally benchmarks below ATI's 9200 - unless we're talking about the 5200 Ultra? That would be a halfway-house between the 9200 and 9600 I guess.

Definitely a sidegrade. The 5200 is what the powerbook runs, I believe ( or is it the ultra?) Anyways, the 5200 is enough for Apple to say, "See?! Our new iBooks support core video" ...but just eeking by with the bare minimum requirements.

If the iBook update includes a RAM increase to 512MB, how will this fit in on the RAM slots, (will there be one 512 chip and an empty slot or two 256 chips.) I want to upgrade to 768 MB or 1.25GB so what chips will i need to buy?

Oooh now that is an excellent question. Does anyone know how it works with the current PowerBook?

I would have just assumed that they would put it into the internal slot (i don't have an ibook yet as waiting impatiently for some sort of update, but understand there is one slot available for the end user to upgrade without invalidating your warranty)... but if the total RAM allowed is 1.2GB then you'd have to put a 768MB into the empty slot. Does this kind of chip even exist as i don't see that size on Crucial??

if they do it as 2 x 256 then you don't have an empty slot and you'd end up having to remove one and replace it with a 1GB. That makes no sense to me either.

a very good point raised i think, i hope someone with a current PB knows the answer!
