The 12" powerbook has 256MB soldered on the mother board and a 256MB chip in the user replaceable slot. If you want to upgrade the ram you have to remove the 256 and replace it with up to 1GB. The 15" and 17" powerbooks have 2 slots and nothing soldered to the mother board so they can take up to 2GB of memory.

I wouldn't expect the ibook to get 512MB on the mother board until the 12" power book does.

From the 12" PB Tech Specs page

"512MB of PC2700 (333MHz) DDR SDRAM; one SO-DIMM slot; support for up to 1.25GB"

So the PB comes shipped with 2 x 256 MB chips and no free slot, meaning to max out the RAM you must remove the second 256 MB chip and replace with 1 GB.

The iBook also has 2 slots but right now comes with just 256 MB soldered in and the other slot free.

So if and when it does go to 512 MB shipped you're gonna be faced with the same situation as current PB owners are.

A bit crappy on Apple's part if you ask me. How much more expensive is a single 512 MB chip over 2 x 256 MB? Can't be a fat lot, and unless the soldering of it to the logic board is difficult I can't see why Apple don't just drop 256 MB chips altogether.

Thanks to you and emoore3 for the info.

The only problem i can foresee is that if they were to put a single 512 chip in (in the future), then in order to get the maximum 1.2GB RAM you would need a 768 chip in your spare slot. i'm not sure that you can purchase this size. well not from crucial.com anyway!

The maximum would then become 1.5 GB. The maximum is not really determined by what Apple says. Often it is by what size RAM chips are available at the time. Now that 2GB chips are starting to come out, theoretically you could put a 2Gb chip in the one slot, and get 2.5GB of RAM. My old powerbook supposedly has a maximum of 640MB, but it is running at 1.128 GB.

Yes, there are no 768MB chips.

What he said :)

All I'd add is that it might be the case that older Macs will not be able to take advantage of larger (ie 2 GB) chips, in the same way that my old G3 iBook cannot use any chip greater than 512 MB.

But this is probably a G3 vs G4 thing, as all G4 i/P Books can use 1 GB chips.

it's a ddr thing, tibooks cant use 1GB dimms.

Anybody see that the Amazon $100 rebate on 14" iBook/Combo ends Jun 7? Hmmm, whadda ya think bout that???? You know, I could have sworn that they were listing their 14" iBook Combo's for $1099 last week WITH the $100 rebate. Was I dreaming?? Cheers

Yes I think we are at the point where its either going to be at WWDC or :shakes head: Mac Expo Paris in September.

I think I posted this a while ago in this thread  but my opinion is that Apple can't write off the new school year by not upgrading, particularly when you consider last year's "no imac all summer till after school started" debacle. It may not be much of an upgrade, but Apple will do SOMETHING to the ibook at WWDC.

I personally think they will be out before WWDC maybe tommorow or next tuesday, but im not usually correct

so *Rolls Eyes* new ibooks will be out tomorrow?

I really hope so. I've been waiting for the new one since the beginning of April. But I think tomorrow is unlikely. From what I've read on this forum it seems that Apple always delays shipping right before an update. Well, the iBooks ship on the first business day. So it doesn't look like it. Perhaps next friday or tuesday after next.

i think they'll do a minor upgrade at WWDC for all systems that dont support the new OS fully. they might say that they wanted to bring all the models up to speed to take full advantage of the new OS

Um, I can't see Steve Jobs appearing on stage to say "We're putting new GPUs in the iBook and Mac mini now. Thanks; have a good conference."

But do you know that you will actually get one shipped within next business day?

If Apple knows that we know that the ship dates actually reveal 'subliminal messages' related to product releases, then perhaps the information portrayed on their website is not 100% accurate.

Of course by posting this, 'they' now know that we know that they know that we know that ship dates have bearing on product releases, so who knows what the information means anymore.......

Okay, you got me there. Anyway, I still don't think today or tuesday is likely, although I'm hoping.

I'm sure you meant West coast time. But anyway, when Apple releases an update on a day where there is no event going on (i.e. MWSF, WWDC, etc), it's already up on the Apple store website by 9AM ET/6AM PT. We'll just have to wait now until next Monday afternoon probably for anything new.

West coast - I was thinking faster then I can type, it happens alot with me. But anyways, its time now.

I agree, why would they release something so close to WWDC? They need someting for the Keynote speech.

Minor updates frequently come before expos/conferences. Major stuff is saved for keynotes.
