As soon as someone makes products as well as apple, both hardware and software included, then I will consider them! Yes Apple charge a premium because they make the best products. Customers who prefer quality pay for quality. Unfortunatley I think many less tech savvy people will get home with their brand new iMacs and wonder why it is so slow, then be pointed to the fact that they have a 5400 rpm hard drive and this experience may turn many customers off apple.
I just pulled out a receipt for an old PC with an Intel E8400 3ghz CPU it was bought in 08 for just over $600, it's now running Windows 10, it is still as fast as my 2012 Core i7 Mac Mini, how much quality do you want, or are you talking about pretty.

I think the 5400rpm choice is part of Apple's calculation.
Let's face it, most people as regular consumers are buying laptops, MacBooks nowadays, not desktops.
So maybe Apple boils their target for the iMac to specific customer segments. First would be education. Performance would not matter as much compared to price, thus whatever Apple has in their margin formula, they decided baseline 5400rpm drive is enough. Next customer segment would be the enthusiasts, the ones that would know/be willing to upgrade the specs, which translates to opportunity for upsell.

We can complain about the price and whatnot, but in the end, Apple did its calculations. I'm sure most of us here that want to buy an iMac will know and upgrade the drive anyway. Yes, it is annoying, but doesn't mean it is wrong.

It seems so odd to have a 4K resolution screen and then have a hard drive that is slower than slow. I got a Mac mini with a 512k SSD and I was blown away at speeds and I'd never go back to anything but an SSD.

The fusion drive should have been standard and eliminate the hard drive. I mean we're on the verge of 2016.

Only a 512k SSD?

I'm surprised they make them that small these days.

Magic Mouse 2's fast charging is useful, since its bottom-facing Lightning port renders it unusable while charging. Magic Keyboard and Magic Trackpad 2 both have Lightning ports on the rear, meaning both accessories can still be used while charging.

"Magic Mouse 2's fast charging is useful since its bottom-facing Lightning port renders it unusable while charging"? I think you mean to say useless?

Also, the whole user experience with PCs is just below par. Warranty, repair, accessories... Back before I bought my MBA I bought a brand new ACER laptop. The day I bought it I had to leave it running for 10 hours to update the OS. After I did all these "essential windows updates" the laptop wouldnt turn on. So I rang the retailer, they redirected me to the manufacturer, who told me that it was a software problem, not a hardware problem, and there was nothing he would do to help me. Luckily I eventually got the laptop working with the help of a computer science friend who did something with safe mode or something I dont understand.

Point is, its the whole experience that matters and is what Apple customers pay extra for.

I think it's going to be on a lot of Apple users horizon, this mediocre stuff they're bringing out at premium prices is getting beyond a joke.

I agree and I think its going to catch up with them. While Apple has always basically hidden from the spec wars, as consumers are getting more and more savvy and competition exposes this Apple becomes venerable. This strategy has worked for them for awhile. The question is will it continue to work?

The announcements have just made me look a bit more at what Microsoft just announced and giving it strong consideration. I have no need for any of these products and will not be purchasing them.

I did buy an iPhone 6s Plus, but this kind of stuff gives me pause that I eve did that. Though I will admit I have been loving the crap of my iPhone.

I'm not going to bother watching the video, 5400rpm drives are slow, slow, slow, if you think otherwise I'll sell you my ex 1TB drive from my late 2012 Mini.

I watched the video. Surprise! It's Western Digital advertising!

Sorry. Give me something from Storage Review, for example, or one of the better tech sites -- you know, the ones that aren't trying to sell 5400 drives to unsuspecting customers. You think this youtube thing is rigorous? Not so much.

Well see, every time one of you Apple fans tell us one of these PC stories it's nearly always identical, Viruses by the millions, only had it one day or one week, no one would help me, you do realise there are laws to prevent these sorts of things.
Anyway, my experience and millions of other Windows and Linux users is totally different, I have a 2006 Netbook that just won't stop running, two other entertainment pcs that won't stop running, I wish they would stop running so I could throw them out and buy new ones, but they won't.
One of my worst experiences with a product was an Apple product and a password, even after 6 months it was never resolved, put the thing on EBay just to get rid of it.

Dudes, I have a MacBook (no Air or Pro or anything like that, just plain MacBook) from 2008 -- yeah, that "special edition" unibody MacBook, remember that one? -- and it's still running strong today, running El Capitan and all.

All your little stories, mine included, are mere anecdotes. There are long-running PCs and there are long-running Macs, and also, there are short-running PCs and there are short-running Macs.

We buy what we like, and sometimes we get unlucky. It happens with all products.

Get over it, your little crusades are a waste of time.

You're 100% right, but try telling Apple fans that a PC can last over a week and they won't believe you. Also they don't buy what they like they buy Apple sticker.

Its funny how these experiences make us so loyal to another brand. When i switched from windows and bought my first mac, I could not believe how easy everything was. Seems like you had the same experience but in reverse. Luckily I have never had a problem with apple gear (touch wood) just as you swear by your gear. I am happy to pay a premium to use OS X, and will not be boycotting Apple. If you do not need Apple gear, why are you so keen for them to lower their prices and change their products?

Seeing this, it really convinces me that it's time for Apple to kill the iMac. The all-in-one was a great concept in the late 90s when Apple needed a killer selling point to differentiate themselves but it's not that great an idea anymore. I think it's long overdue that Apple make a respectable, headless Mac option.

I think you and a few others on here will be the only people convinced of this. To be honest, it's incomprehensible to me.

I think you'll find that the majority of people don't want to be stuffing around with monitors. Just give me the machine all in one and I'm done. It's powerful if you don't buy the bottom option and lasts for a good 4 - 6 years. The iMac is going nowhere and it's still a good concept.

I remember back in late 2012, just before the release of the latest design iMac, some joker on these threads was totally convinced the iMac was EOL because it had been 18 months since the last release. He even had others believing him and was very bullish about it to the point of getting stuck into people who questioned him on it. As soon as they were released, he disappeared. Quite possibly a competitor or just delusional... we'll never know. But I'm guessing the 2nd.

I didn't say anything about needing or not needing Apple gear, I dare say I have spent more on Apple products than many people on this forum. The thing is I don't have to use Apple, I can use almost any computer, including many running all sorts of Linux.
If you buy Apple products almost exclusively, the chances of being able to run a real computer are next to none and then you have to keep buying Apple at Premium prices. If on the other hand you have something between your ears besides an Apple earbud you can buy what you like at any price level. WIN WIN.

So... confused. The Bluetooth devices pair via a cable... so why not just use a corded keyboard and mouse which never require charging and never get radio interference?

I'm sure that must be a one-time pairing and then you don't need the cable anymore until the next month when your keyboard or mouse stops working and you need to locate that cable in order to recharge. Again, why not just used a corded keyboard and mouse? Not really seeing the benefit for use on a desktop machine which isn't likely to be moved around the home or outside the home much. I guess I'm just not one of those people who uses my desktop computer from 30 feet away.

It's pretty funny that Apple would make a new site comparing the new iMac to the 1998 one when the new one literally has 1998 technology in it.

So be happy with your abilities. I do not need to be educated on how much thriftier I could be when buying computers. It doesnt take a genius to see that Apple products are not the cheapest products. But I do it by choice. My percieved value is equal to the price. Your percieved value is lower than the price because you are happier with cheaper products that for you do the same thing.

So keep it plugged in? Then you get your cord!

Unfortunately for you, your perceived value is keeping you poorer than you should be and Apple richer than they should be. But hey, that's Apple, everything is gorgeous and pretty and pink and space grey.

What's a real computer? I thought I had a real computer!?!? My macbook pro and iMac are used almost every day in a professional capacity. Doesn't that make them real?

Why, on earth, would these machines come standard with a 5,400 RPM hard drive? That essentially mandates an upgrade to a Fusion drive, which now is limited to only 24GB SSD unless you go up to the 2TB Fusion Drive. It seems like a lot of upgrading just to get some decent speed performance.
This.
I think it's bloody awful that a desktop Mac comes with a normal hdd and the 1tb Fusions are now a travesty too. When they were introduced flash drives were expensive, now the yard not yet they choose to downgrade the basic configuration. I get really bored of people moaning about Apple (don't like it? don't buy it? no ones forcing you) but I really do feel that apart from the screens the iMacs haven't had any real improvement for years, and in fact in someways they have gotten worse (thermal throttling). I was really torn between waiting for this release or grabbing a second hand non retina with a decent Nvidia GPU (as I game a little), I went for the latter and I am very glad I did now.

Time will prove you right or wrong about Apple.
If you feel you are somehow better off with the money you are saving, be happy.
