Exactly. Complaining about the X600 is total rubbish. It will get good framerates in any Mac game except Doom 3 (and even that will probably play acceptably enough for all but the most demanding). A better card would of course be nice, but I'm far from disappointed.

the x600xt is a good enough card for that mac. i'm just surprised that apple cripples that card again and only allowes mirroring. will the screen spanning hack work on this card and support 1920x1200?

Funny, no speculation on whether the imacs are using the new low-power 970 variants IBM should have available by now. That might explain how they were able to shrink it even further and will hopefully make for less heat related quality problems.

I think steve or someone made a mistake on the iMac spec slides- it shows 160mb for the 17" and 250mb for the 20"..maybe some retro styling included?

The educatinal price for the iMac is $1199, if you add 512MB memory the price is still $1199. This bug or feature does not exist on the normal pricing (the 512MB module costs you unless you're a student or teacher).

So basiclly there are two different type of remotes put out today?

A bluetooth remote for controlling the universal dock and an IR remote that comes shipped with the new iMac?
No, it's ALL infrared--one remote that works for both FrontRow and iPods. The universal dock has an IR receiver on the front. (And the iMac's receiver, apparently, is the Apple logo!)

I think it a simple mistake right now. If it was free then it would be included as a standard and giving people choice of either 512MB or 1GB for the same money, which answer is quite simple yet easy for someone to omit.

But when I look at the iMac's spec in the wireless connectivity category there is only AE an Bluetooth listed, no IR. :(

Thanks!

So I gather the remote is "software" connected to the FrontRow app.

We NEED this FrontRow app for PowerMacs. :D

Wrong. It's infared only. The receiver on the iMac is behind the apple logo.
Ugh...:( I wish it was bluetooth so I could use it on my other Macs, looks like I'll just get a Keyspan remote, that's if that Front Row thing is made for other Macs besides the iMac that is.

Make sure you've got all the correct power conversion stuff down before plugging it in abroad. I'm not sure if a U.S. iMac will have a power converter capable for overseas built-in, and IIRC there was a thread not too long ago about a guy who fried his G4 PM by plugging it in without the correct power conversion.
Doesn't Apple sell overseas plugs? I think i saw it somewhere on the store. If that's the case, it should be OK. I'm only going to Britain.

I think the Remote is bluetooth and Infared, bluetooth for the Mac, and infared for the iPod docks. This way Apple doesn't have to make two different remotes. I'm sure you'll be able to use this bluetooth remote on another Mac, I would guess at most you'd need a driver for it or something. The Apple remote and Front Row would be a nice combination to sell togeather. Photobooth should come with all iSights and should be downloadable for free (or at the very least free for all previous iSight owners), I would like Front Row for free also.

i really do hope they release the Front Row/Photobooth free or bundled with iLife or when buying an iSight, as long as guys like us who bought the previous machines be able to use them.

5-7 weeks?

A 20inch through EDU store with 500GB HDD has delivery of 5-7 weeks!

Gasp!

Ooohhh ... I really, really want one! Why, oh why, do I already have an iMac?!

I wonder how much I can get if I sell one of the previous generation iMacs.

Even more comfortable with my AirClick then. ;)

Hey, would this work on the original iMac?! The Bondi one? It can run Tiger and already has an infrared port. Hmm....full circle here?

I thought the last 20" had hit my sweet spot, but:
$100 price drop
faster CPU
better GPU
built in iSight
extra 1GB RAM is only $200 compared to $180 on Crucial (for rev B RAM) - it's not worth getting 3rd party RAM anymore. Could there be a new Apple policy of not overcharging for RAM?

SATA 7200 rpm hard drives, too.

The Apple Store is listing an 'Apple Remote' for $29.99 that looks just like the Front Row remote. Thing is, they have the remote working with iPods too!

Just do a search for 'Front Row' from the main Apple Store site. Someone want to guess what's going on with this whole Front Row thing?!

Apple has launched a Universal Dock for all iPods with a dock connector port which accepts a wireless signal from the new Apple Remote device. The Remote also works with the new G5 iMac, also announced today. The Remote sells for $29 and will ship in two to three weeks, while the Universal Dock sells for $39 and will ship in one to two weeks.

In my understanding Apple Remote is not the same as iMac Remote. Apple Remote is indended to be used with iPod Universal Dock. I don't believe FrontRow would be available for PowerMacs/Books/MacMini - besides if it's not Bluetooth how will it communicate with anything other then new iMac?

It's been covered that it is an infrared remote a few times now, so my repeating it just now may have been unnecessary. However, I'm not too sure about the receiver being located behind the Apple logo. Does anyone have a source on that? It seems that the most obvious place to integrate this would be into the iSight camera itself, as it has slightly different specs than the standalone camera. A future update to the iSight to bring it in line with the iMac's camera specs could also add infrared support (if it doesn't already exist) and allow the use of the Apple remote on a wider range of products without adding an unsightly dongle. Running it through the iPod dock would just be an alternative to that for the millions of us with iPods and no iSight.

I'd really like to see Apple extend support to EyeTV and the Plextor USB tuners in FrontRow, allowing for a fifth icon to be added to the circle and allowing third party companies to produce a PVR application styled to match Front Row and compatible with the remote. This would then present the best solution for Apple and even allow it to work with Elgato to make an EyeTV that worked as a slim stand for a Mac mini and provided the TV tuning and AV connections that the mini currently lacks (tossing in space or an option for a Firewire hard drive inside this new EyeTV would also be a pretty sweet idea).

How exactly is this a competitor? You can't display it on a TV!!!!!!!! What's the point? And don't give me that crap about it having video out because it's crap resolution and is hardly worth mentioning. Who wants a full screen show on that dinky 17" screen? You can view up to 30' away! Really? Whoopee, who can see anything on a moniter that far away? And why would you want too? This will not make sense until they figure out how to get it off the Mac and onto your HDTV.

Oh, add a movie rentals to iTunes too. Now we're talking. ;)

This computer has an integrated LCD screen. A media centre computer that otuputs to TV has no need for a screen. It's a different market.

Now this iMac is perfect for college kids...

HDTV, Movie rentals - they're different markets too and we're not there yet. The studios have to get cool with their new copy protection, HD-DVD and Blu-Ray needs to sort itself out, HDCP needs to be added, bandwidth issues, legally ripping DVDs, etc. etc.

Going for TV shows first is clever IMHO.

So, there has been no mention of a new iMac on the rumor sites so I bought one last week. Today there's a new one announced which is $200 cheaper, faster processor (2Ghz to 2.1). Faster graphics card, BUILT IN iSight, and cool new programs like Photobooth and FrontRow.

I can return this one for a 10% restock fee (about $200) within 14 days and if I buy ProCare ($99) they can do the migration assistant to transfer files.

But, I don't have it in me-I'm screwed.

Why are you screwed? You have the choice.
