Totally agree - keep the apple key

I totally agree, if this is real the production version should definitely keep the apple key.:apple:
Whats up with all the non-us posters claiming keys are missing, this is a US-En keyboard, not UK-En and definetly not Norwiegen or Swedish, you guys are just confusing the Americans with your § and the @ not being on the 2 key discussions. They will localize it, they same way they always have, the only things changed are the volume, eject, dashboard keys, and the Apple missing.

I would've rather seen the command key removed instead of the Apple key. It's been the Apple key for 20 years, dating back to when there was a "black Apple" and a "white Apple" key.

It DOES need a "command" label though if it will no longer have an Apple. Nobody in tech support could ever be able to describe what a "command" key looks like...

Thanks!

Hmm, I noticed "num-lock" on the "clear" key is gone.
Which isn't ever going to be a problem because that key didn't do anything, num-lock is always on despite pressing it, on every mac I've ever used.
Could someone explain why it was there on previous/current Apple keyboards? For use with XP maybe?

Edit: Ok, apparently its been missing for awhile. But still... why in the first place?

This provides a good write-up:

What's the whole point of keeping the Apple logo there? It confuses new users when someone tells them "Command" key, which people use more often than "Apple" key. Getting rid of the logo makes room to put "command," on it.

Have a look at some of your menus. The symbols in the menus clearly should be the same as the symbols printed on the keys.

Backlit keys

In the close-up of the keypad, it definitely looks like the keys will be backlit like the MacBook Pros. The numbers and symbols look transparent, not painted on. Also I'm sure there will be a USB port on the left side as well.

Looks NICE!

EDIT: BTW, I vote get rid of the Apple on the Command key.

How's this for some logic:
1. New iMac brings us a new keyboard
2. new keyboard has iTunes controller
3. Apple announces new iTunes with iMac to support buttons
4. new iTunes is actually iTunes 8
5. If there's a new iTunes, there's a new iPod to take advantage of the nifty features
6. Apple announces new iPod, August 7th.

Perhaps they leaked out pictures of the keyboard to take focus away from the flack they were getting for the 'short' iPod rumors.

The new placement of the buttons is def. questionable, but when was the last time you saw an application that actually used those function buttons?

Well for starters Ableton Live uses the F keys by default as the channel on/off switches.

That said, you have to disable the native functions as it is (system volume, display brightness etc) because holding down fn + F1 every time you wish to turn channel 1 on or off in a real world scenario (especially playing live!) is just plain silly.

Now I think about in fact, just about every pro app I can think of makes extensive use of the F keys; Logic, Final Cut and so on.

This keyboard would be great if it were not for the stupid layout of the top row of keys. Why in the world would you want to use a "fn" key when you didn't have to? On the current apple keyboard F9-F12 are used for expose and dashboard and the volume and eject keys are over the numpad. With this new keyboard they combine the two so you have to use "fn" for either the expose/dashboard functions or volume/eject functions. It is much easier if they just kept these keys where they currently are now, especially as I don't think that an F19 key will ever be used. I personally really like the idea of labeling expose keys like it is done on F3 and F4 (at least it looks that way) but the expose functions should remain on F9-F12, along with F8 for spaces and just have them labeled there and keep the volume/eject keys where they are now. In my mind it seems stupid to have to use an "fn" key combination when it has never been necessary before(at least on desktop keyboards). I hope that this changes before it comes out, that is if it is real. Sorry for my long posting, but this really irritates me because other than this problem the keyboard is really nice.

I don't think this is real.

1. It's ugly.
2. Look at the closeups... the keys don't fit right
3. Apple logo doesn't look right
4. It is FANTASTICALLY non-ergonomic
5. Someone is willing to sell them to you now.

How would you know if something is ergonomic or not if you haven't used it?

Jesus...

I think it's funny when people go "FAKE!" without any inside knowledge of what Apple is doing or not. If this turns out to be real, you were WRONG!

IMO this is a prototype,... but real.

Seriously, I would bet 5000$ that if I posted a thread with a poll here on MR with pictures from the iPhone before it was introduced I bet that 90% of the users would vote "FAKE", "hey man, this is fake, no way Apple is going to ditch the keyboard", "wow, I'm losing faith in Apple's design", yadda yadda yadda, WRONG!

Although I was a little skeptical at first the more I look at it the more I like it.
Im not a fan of the white on ally but I think if they were to use the white plastic for the body it would look a lot better but overall I like the general over hall of the keys and the new slim take on it.
I also like the way they have incorporated the USB plugs into the rest, ah, little things.
On the note of USB I really hope they're USB2, no more fumbling around the back of my mac ...
And also Id love it if it had backlit keys, would be killer.

Lets hope this isn't some determined PS addict ey ...

Oi...
The sticker on the underside of the computer indicates that this is not a cosmetic prototype. Read: this is not the final look. It is more of a layout and material experiment.

For example - a company may use a non-cosmetic prototype to experiment with materials, layout, and enclosure details (cooling vents, circuit placement, connector placement, etc...)

Granted Apple may do things in a different way, but I think that what we see here is most likely a rough cut that will be subject to some additional tweaks and polish (or it is completely fake, whatever)...

All they really have to do is make the fn button function like the Caps Lock. Press it once, and you use all the function keys like normal. Press it again and you're back to controlling brightness, etc. Not sure they will, but it would be nice.

Please let this be the keyboard for a new headless Mac. Just kidding! Please don't let this be the keyboard for any Mac. It's fugly with a capital F.

The white aluminum combo just doesn't look very classy to me. The keyboard looks great but I would have prefered all white, all aluminum.

I am really not a fan of the white on metal. It doesn't seem to fit with the whole simplistic motif that apple's going for. Why couldn't they just have silver keys like on the mbp? sure it's just painted plastic, but it keeps the uniform look. Any word on if it'll be backlit or not?

This keyboard would be great if it were not for the stupid layout of the top row of keys. Why in the world would you want to use a "fn" key when you didn't have to?

Any buttons assigned to media controls or expose or the like take priority of whatever else is assigned to an f- key. So you would only need to press the function key in addition to the particular f-key if something other than said controls were assigned to it. For the everyday user, it's the same.

Looks great...

The keyboard looks great...

I'm running out of USB ports and was hoping for a keyboard with an iPhone port and/or ipod port to charge and sync. I would assume this is possible to make, I realize it would need more power.

I created an account here just to respond to this because the same thing happened to me, albeit more personal.

When I bought an iPhone on day 1, I had the first unboxing pictures up on Flickr minutes after 6pm Eastern time, even before Engadget posted their pics. Someone actually posted a link of my set to Engadget's comments. Within an hour, the comment was deleted. I emailed Ryan about it and he said it was flagged as spam. I call BS, and they are just trying to protect the traffic to their site.

I love reading Engadget, but actions like that are uncalled for and frankly p*ss me off.

AOLEngadget sucks. They had a good run. RIP

Do the people who 'aren't fans' of the look realize that the current iMac and Mac Mini both have a white/metal look?

I wonder if this design means that the iMac will not be brushed aluminum? The keyboard would seem to match the current iMac better.

Why couldn't they just have silver keys like on the mbp?
I'm going to say it's for a strong contrast between keys and surface.

Has Apple ever shipped multiple keyboards at the same time, say when they made the switch from the Pro Keyboard to the Apple Keyboard? How long before the Mac Pro started packing some sleek, next update?

I hated it at first... but I think I like it now that I have looked at it some more... I will keep the old ones since they don't make the replacement keys for Final Cut Pro and other pro apps for that keyboard... I still think the old keyboards looked better, but this one is a good step forward that I know I will get used to.
