Take a second and look at the key labels. They've removed the Apple logo from the command keys and replaced them with the words "Command" - I doubt it. The volume keys are shared with the Exposé functions as well? That spells horrible experience for new users. At least on the laptops, the F1-F8 keys are generally not used for anything so putting the media keys there works well. There is no way they made that move.

And no USB ports? Really Apple?

I don't believe it. If it's real, god help us, they're keyboards are getting worse by the year. At least sell it for only $20 so it's no so damn painful to keep replacing them. My problem with their last two keyboards is the quality. I literally was replacing my Apple keyboard annually, until I bought a Matias Tactile Pro. C'mon Apple, give us a keyboard that lasts!

Urgh...

Now... Take a look at the pics again. It's not a cosmetic unit, meaning not finishing, meaning adding the little :apple:'s to make you happy is certainly not beyond Apple's reach.

There are USB ports, unless you're blind. And I never knew that Apple release keyboards every year! Wow...

Keyboard looks very convincing to me. And I do seem to follow the thinking that it's a very low-key product for someone to spend all that time to mock up and try to spread rumors. I'll just add this to the Apple Marketing dept. conspiracy deliberatley leaking rumours to drive up interest in a product launch. :D

Guess it's a personal preference issue. I enjoy slimline keyboards (love my MacBook, use an Eluminix backlit slimline on my home PC) - less finger travel + appropriate feedback = quicker typing. If you prefer big, clicky keyboards (which I quite like, but find I'm less efficient on), I can see being very disappointed with this new design concept. For me, though, manna from heaven.

Yeah... I learned on big clicky keyboards and almost didn't like the MacBook Pro keyboards, but got used to them after I was forced to use it while my G5 was in the shop. I really don't like laptops that much, but may change my mind if I keep doing this "coffee shop" with free WiFi thing. I will be buying up all the current Apple keyboards if Apple ever did make the mistake of following these artist mockups, and putting out a keyboard based off of a laptop.

hmmmm, at this time no remove du by a legal from Apple.

So it's a fake

Its also a fake by the poor layout of the keys. The artist isn't an engineer.

Honestly, I'd give the MacBook board a shot. It's far sturdier than it looks and has better feedback than the MB Pro. I was pretty skeptical when I first picked this laptop up, but after a year and a half it's become one of my favorite keyboards. Worth a try, at least.

I have tried it... it's not bad, but by no means a keyboard for a desktop. I would get used to anything after using it for a while especially a year. To tell you the truth there is nothing that I won't use, or that I find to bad to use after a while... I adapt pretty quickly to good tech, it take a while for bad tech.

I just don't think the MacBook keyboard is a good start to a redesign of the Apple keyboard. Desktop keys get pounded by the fat fingers of non-tech oriented people, so why make them with the delicate keys from a keyboard.

And this keyboard just takes too many design cues from Windows Vista engineers. They move too much stuff around for no reason, and the F14-F19 keys are useless, while the keys that used to be there have been pushed on the other side. The FN button is where the help button used to be so forget about one handing the commands, and things just don't make since. And I pay hundreds of dollars for that Apple logo so put it back on the Command key and stop playing with me.

It's just to ugly and carelessly designed to be Apple... its a fake.

If it hasn't been said yet the two mystery keys are Expose' and Dashboard.

Thanks... I was going to rip my hair out from the ignorance on icon design. Now that I know what keys they are... it makes even more sense that it's a fake. I could understand if the round one was Time Machine, so I could just hit that button and Time Machine would do a back up in the background, but Expose and Dashboard? Most people have short cuts for that... and it's a desktop keyboard... that's what the mighty mouse's extra buttons are for.

Careless.

It is possible that this is the fake keyboard. It does not make sense that Apple would be offering keyboard that is wired instead of bluetooth to go along with the new iMac. Considering the direction of the technology. Look at everything else. Like the Apple mouse, it is bluetooth.

Wtf? There are too many customers that dislike bluetooth or wireless. It's good to have it as an OPTION, but not as standard without a choice.

I would hope that Apple wouldn't be so cheap to not offer a bluetooth keyboard. The tech exist for Apple to package a bluetooth keyboard and mouse with the iMac, but people may not like the idea of having to charge their keyboards and mice after a while. They could put rechargeable battery packs in them and charge them through the USB port when the batts die... but that's another discussion.

This mockup is just proving what some have been saying about Apple and the tech industry as a whole. Less innovation and more laziness. The iPhone is the only thing that has been an innovation in years and only the UI is innovative. Apple has gotten lazy and the mockup artists are lazy as well.

... on other notes I believe Apple could develop a keyboard that is wireless (bluetooth) AND also able to connect via USB.

Same with the new mouse :)

Just a few days ago my flatmate was running around asking for batteries to use in his bluetooth mouse because they had died. That's one big fat reason for me to never ever buy a wireless keyboard or mouse.

Wired works perfectly

Wired = better

I hope not

I call this as BS.

This might either be a prototype, or a mock-up. But I pray that this isn't real. It's ugly. The "brushed metal" almost looks beige, and it contrasts too sharply with the white keys. Notice how the Help key says "fn" on it. It looks like someone just took notebook keys and placed them on a full-size keyboard.

And the volume/eject buttons where the F9 - F12 buttons are? Completely idiotic. It is very simple and elegant to just jump my hand from my mouse and tap the volume keys on the right side of my keyboard. Moving those volume keys to the center of the keyboard requires more movement, so it is not nearly efficient. And then consider that the F9 - F12 keys are already assigned other functions for Exposé. If I have to press a stupid "fn" key before being able to adjust the volume would make things even worse.

At best, I'm thinking this is just a prototype, and NOT the real thing.

If it is real, then it is a good thing that I have a Matias Tactile Pro keyboard, the best keyboard ever made.

Looks like they've moved the eject key, I would prefer to have it back in its current place as you can easily access it without looking at the keyboard.

I'd be happy if they moved the eject button. I'm forever ejecting my CDs becasue of it's placement. It's especially bad on the laptop. My finger tends to overshoot the backspace/delete key.

Why does everyone hate this thing so much?

I realize a lot of people might not like the whole laptop-style-keyboard-for-a-desktop thing, but from a pure design perspective, this thing is innovative and very attractive. I think most design-philes would agree with me on that.

Or not. I dunno.

It's real in the sense that it's a physical keyboard from Apple. Only time will tell whether or not it's the production version though.

I think it looks nice, but I am skeptical about how comfortable it would be to type on, considering how thin and edgy it is.

3. Cmd key without the Apple logo? wtf? - image

The Apple logo never made any sense on the Mac keyboard. It was just a historical curiosity, a holdover from the days when the Mac keyboard was also used for the Apple IIgs, where the open Apple actually meant something. I just can't believe it took them this long to finally get rid of it and add a more useful label. Huzzah!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Command_key

I don't know why people find it so hard to believe the Apple logo is missing from the Command key. How many times have I seen comments on Mac forums saying "don't call it Apple-H, call it Command-H." And most books, tutorials, etc., refer to it as the Command key, not the Apple key. It makes complete sense to me that they would remove the Apple logo from the key finally.

On that note, the keyboard is bad. I refuse to buy any keyboard that is not ergonomically designed (split design). I will continue using my MS keyboard no matter what, until Apple comes up with an ergo keyboard.

Look at the pic of the label on the underside a little more closely. The label lists the color combinations used: Sea Shell 1, Arctic White, Moon Gray. The date (6/20/07) is interesting. "Apple Development Team". My guess is that this is one of several different prototypes used by the ADT to test color combinations, key layouts, etc. The shape and size are probably very close to the production unit, but the colors and key layout may not be. In any case, these are not pictures of a production sample.

Very good! I agree. If real, it's a prototype. The colors are ugly; It'd prefer having everything the same color, not white keys on a metal back. White on white, metal on metal, or.... black on black! That'd be cool.
