I hope they stop using cheap displays. I went back to a white 2.16GHz C2D because the new ones are horrible.

The new displays are garbage. If Apple doesn't address this with this update then there's absolutely nothing to get excited about. It's a little like being at a restaurant and having the waitress say, "Oh, the chef decided he's going to upgrade your chuck steak to a New York, but sadly, he's going to have to put a turd on top of it."

I haven't weighed in here in a while, but the phrase "long awaited" in the original story caught my attention.

These things were updated NINE (!) months ago...is that "long awaited" these days? I think we, as apple enthusiasts get spoiled with frequent product updates, and always want the next thing.

anyone agree?

Dang It!...I got fed up with waiting on Tuesday and ordered a custom iMac which is being shipped as we speak....am I SOL on returning it? Can I refuse delivery? Do I have any options? I am pretty sure apple has a no return policy on any custom orders.

You are SOL on custom orders from Apple. Dude, keep it in perspective. You will have a functional, speed computer. It is not like your (future) computer will be useless.

Uh oh, this means that the iMacs probably won't be updated with Montevina until fall. Apple usually waits awhile between cycles.

Can we assume Apple has wised up and will put the matte screen option back? Isn't it the only Apple display product that doesn't have that option?

Blu-ray would be a welcome addition. I wish they would have a read-only option, but from what I've heard there will only be what you might call a Blu-ray Superdrive.

Well, you know what happens when you assume? Also the iMac is not the only display without a matte option, the Macbooks are stuck with glossy as well. The consumer products do not have those options.

...my parents would have to put up with a dying PC that constantly needs reformatting once every other week.

Your parents should look for a new computer support person.

Clearly their current one is incompetent if the only solution is to reformat bi-weekly.

Totally agree! But I feel like I'm helpless!!! HeLPmE!!! I'm getting the urge to put my 24" 2.8GHz 4GB RAM beast of an iMAc on ebay...

FINALLY REAL MAC RUMORS!!! This is just what I am gonna need before taking the plunge and buying a brand new iMac..! GO APPLE!

Basic wishlist:

Penryn procs;
2Gb RAM standard;
Bigger HD;
Updated GPU (even if just slightly).

Here is to new iMacs next week!!! :D

You're off your rocker if you thought Montevina was going to hit the iMacs within 6-8 weeks of release. Think of the cycle. It will go to the MacBook Pro and possibly MacBook first, and even those will be several weeks after the Intel "release" date. Just like Santa Rosa, and like the Penryns. Apple doesn't update immediately. Get a clue. The iMacs won't see the Montevina upgrade till Sept/Oct in time for the holiday shopping season. Could be as late as late Oct/early Nov.

And the Penryn/HDD and other spec bumps are not that significant. Not as much as the Santa Rosa and aluminum jump last summer. Get it two months ago. Get it now. Get it next week. Be happy with it. Montevina is a while away.

Makes sense to me

update the entire notebook line in Q2 (Jan - Mar), then update iMac line in Q3 (Apr - Jun). I wouldn't rule out an update to the Mac mini to be released at the same time the iMac updates are released.

You can rest assured that new iMacs will be released VERY soon.

Given the price of RAM, I'd rather that they stick with 1GB. A 4GB upgrade is $100, and I'd rather have $25 of that back in reduced price. With 2Gb, you're just throwing away twice as much memory.

they always keep the prices the same, so the ram upgrade would be free

I bet they make a big upgrade to the graphics card (GPU).....I am thinking a 512mb card on the 24' extreme model.

Aww...my beloved 'main man' is no longer the newest model. I have little complaints though, its been rock solid from day one...still is. The only niggle i have is the display but i dont have THAT much qualms with it.

There's really no incentive for me to trade up until Montevina UNLESS Apple switches display panels then i'd be REALLY tempted. We'll see what happens.
