The only way that the iMac will get Blu-Ray this Tuesday is if the Mac Pro (and probably the MBP) get it as well. I'm still hoping it happens!

I was going to buy a car today, but I've decided to wait because there's a rumor that in six weeks it will go 2mph faster.
Or maybe I should wait till November when I hear there will be a new chip installed in the fuel system that will allow an extra 0.2 miles to the gallon.
BEST analogy I've ever read on this forum. Seriously, why are people so hyped about a slight processor bump or extra HDD space? It's not like it'll matter much or make your existing iMac not as great. Do people really think they'll notice a .2ghz processor increase at best? Or will you really care about a slightly larger hard drive? No, so just enjoy your current mac. All technology will be replaced. You must as well be happy with yours.

In your opinion. In *my* opinion the new displays are gorgeous. My mom has a 20" Al iMac and everyone who sees it loves the screen.

It is my opinion, but I think if you look around the Web, you'll see sufficient evidence that there are a lot of problems with the quality of the iMac displays. There are widespread reports of color shifts, yellow casts, decreased viewing angles compared to other displays on the market, the glossy screen causing problems for people with sensitivity to glare and more. None of these were issues with the previous generation iMacs so it's a little hard to defend it. I don't own one, but I've seen them many times in person and have talked to many people who owned (and some who returned) them and can readily confirm that these problems exist. For some people, that's not going to be a big deal, but many of us have higher expectations from Apple and refuse to accept shoddy quality from them.

The new cpu would have the new SSE instruction set, which for some operations makes a big difference.

However reality is that they just want the latest and greatest.

Regardless of if we'll see any big difference in the performance of a new iMac over the old one (like the brilliant and beautiful one I've had since Jan) I think it's always good for customers for Apple to update the machine frequently. What I have right now was the product of eleven months between consecutive releases and I know at the time there was a lot of people regretting buying the older model because of how old it had really become. By updating frequently, Apple can always be selling their machines at reasonable prices and consumers can have more confidence in just picking up whatever's in the store at any given date rather than waiting for the next machine. Whatever happens, I just don't want Apple to start releasing once a year like some people thought they were going to.

It's about time!

I'm just chomping at the bit for a new machine! Now I can give my kids my iMac 20". I'm hoping for true anti-glare glass screen. Can't stand the glossy screen.

I'm not sure about nationwide policies, but here in oklahoma it is a minumum of 30 days.
Some retailers may TELL you that they have a no refund or 14 day refund policy but legally you could challenge that for the mandatory 30 days. Even when buying a car.
Most people don't know that.

You are talking about the Apple store in Oklahoma City, right?

I had a discussion with the Apple salesman before getting my iMac and I remember him saying "we can give you an upgraded machine ... up to 30 days!" In addition, I was assured over the phone earlier today that the store would stick to his word if anything comes up.

Are you a lawyer or something? You sounded like one :D

So as someone who wants to replace their old iMac G5 with an Intel iMac that can play current PC games (nicely) - You think I should buy an 8 month old product at the same price it was 8 moths ago, rather than wait for what is probably 1-2 weeks for a new version with up-to-date specs?

If I was buying a PC, would you recommend I buy a PC desktop from August 2007 now at the same price??

If it was just a couple of months then I'd agree, but 8 months?? Even MacRumors buyer's guide says an update is well overdue and now has a front page rumour about an upcoming revision.

Gold.

As a current iMac owner, I'm not too worried about the updates at all. A small speed bump compared to mine, but this thing flies off the walls faster than what I had previously so I cannot complain. I look forward to Mini updates though. Just need the right time to buy one.

they always keep the prices the same, so the ram upgrade would be free

Not "free"--for "no price increase". It comes at a cost, either a lower price or other components that are less expensive to keep the margins. I'd rather they put the $25 of memory towards better graphics or faster chip speed.

The only time I think it's fair for people to gripe is when they buy within a couple months of a whole new redesign of their particular machine because that usually comes with a ton of cool new goodies/features as well as a bump in specs. People who gripe merely because of a spec bump or a price drop are just annoying.

Most tech companies telegraph everything they do, but Apple is so secretive that I can't help but feel a twinge of sympathy for anyone who buys right before a major redesign. And not everyone follows the daily ins-and-outs of rumor sites, so it's hard to fault them for not foreseeing what most of us thought to be blazingly obvious.

On the flip-side of this are those folks who order in the week or so leading up to an update who generally get a surprise upgrade for the same price. As much as we hear people bitch about missing an update, you never hear people celebrating those surprise, free upgrades.

So anyway, sometimes the griping is understandable, but other times it just seems pointless.

It depends on how you use the iMac. Are you a "media consummer" or a "media creator". Most people use the imac as a media player. They read web content, watch movies or games. For all of these uses you don't need a great display. In fact one that is glossy and exagerates the color contrast migh be preferred.

However if you do care about color fidelity and you are trying to adjust some image you need an accurate display.

We see the same thing with audio. Many consummers like those bass heavy "boomy" sounding speakers. Sure they distort the sound but people seem to like that. But if you worked in a recording studio you could not use those speakers. Studio monitors need to be accurate.

The people who complain about the new iMac tend to be photographers and graphic artists who need an accurte monitor. When you say "everyone who sees it loves the screen" are they just casual lookers or are they using the screen for critical work where acuacy matters?

Check out http://www.matrox.com/graphics/en/gxm/support/mac/home.php . You can not use the three monitor version but you can hook up two monitors to the Mac mini.

It's a cute device, but evidently for the Mini it maxes out at two 1024x768
screens. So I'm not sure it makes sense to do that for most of us, since the
Mini can drive a single 1920x1200 screen without having to spend an extra
couple hundred bucks for the converter box.

My expectations for the next mini update are low. Just give
me Santa Rosa and x3100 and I'll be happy enough!

I agree. I would probably buy three of them.

It would be nice if they also got rid of the combo drive on
the low-end model but that's probably not going to happen.

Amen!

A lot of people on this very site and elsewhere will respond to you by saying that the iMac is an "entry level" machine and a user hasn't any right to expect that kind of quality in the consumer-level monitor, but here's the deal...

1. Previous generations of "entry level" iMacs did not have this problem with quality. Apple needs, at the very least, to maintain the quality level they have set for themselves previously. Customers have that expectation and it's reasonable as Apple themselves have set it.

2. There is no such thing as a $1000+ entry level machine. That is a warped view of things caused by people who keep their heads in Apple's Happy Happy Land and refuse to look around and realize that to the rest of the PC-buying world, $400-700 is "entry level." If Apple insists on charging high prices for their consumer level machines, they need to provide the quality to justify it.

3. Apple has long held a firm grasp on the designer/photographer/publishing market because they have paid close attention to detail when it comes to things like displays... and that is true across the entire product line. This concept that there ever was an "entry level" Mac is new and only comes up when trying to deflect reasonable criticism of Apple.

I agree with you there. But I for one am sick of waiting. I'll be heading to the Apple Store on Wednesday to get my first Mac. Whether it's a new version or an old version, I'll be getting one ;)

God, it would figure they'd update it just a couple weeks after I finally broke down and bought a new Mac. I must say, though, the 24" I have now is pretty damn nice, although I have had some weird issues with the USB, mini-DVI and ethernet.

Otherwise, I'm actually pretty impressed, even with heavy hitting games like Oblivion and Bioshock under Windows. ;)

But I bought it at the only Apple Store near me, which is 80 miles away. I'd have to take the day off work if I wanted to go exchange it. Plus, I've got all my Mac stuff and documents plus Windows and it's stuff I'd have to back-up and transfer. That would be such a pain.

So...for that reason, I'm actually hoping this rumor is just a rumor and the real update won't be until mid to late Summer like last year. :p

I hope the new iMacs have trackpad instead of a mouse.

Since you mentioned it, the AL Keyboard has space to integrate a trackpad. The arrow keys can be the same size and location as the MB/P and the vacant space can fit a trackpad easily with button(s).

Do away with the mouth entirely, heck if the trackpad or touchpad can be added on or extend near the numpad I will not even miss this MM.

The iMac already has laptop components and the new Al keyboard, why not extend it and eliminate the mouse as well. If people want a mouse try LogiTech, far superior to the MM IMHO.

The perfect solution Tablet/TrackPad/Multi-Touch integrated into the Al KB. :D

I'll bet the farm they get a memory upgrade too.

2x2GB SO-DIMM = 4GB total in the SR 17" Hi-Res MBP for less than $80.-

However this is :apple: and profit$ means more than customer satisfaction. :( indeed.

If the 2x4GB SO-DIMM = 8GB was available when I was purchasing I would have jumped on that. :)

I have to admit that :apple: is one of the stingiest companies around when it comes to Ram, HDD, GPU.

I really DO hope they get rid of those crappy TN panels and go to AT LEAST an MVA/PVA panel, with an IPS being ideal. Or at least have an option to "upgrade" to them and keep the TN standard.

My business is looking to get a couple new Macs to replace our ancient (in Graphic Designer/Production years) 5-year-old single-core 1.8GHz G5's, but the budget doesn't allow for Mac Pro's. Thus, we'd LIKE to get iMacs, but with the crappy TN screens where we need accurate color, it doesn't look likely... Instead, they are thinking of getting refurbished old Macs -- which would also mean we'd have to keep our also-ancient 19" CRT's...

PLEASE APPLE!!! :apple:
