what's with the removal of the numpad?? that's so lame

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!

Seriously, I was so up for a Bluetooth keyboard with laptop-style scissor-key action and where the frick is the bloody numeric keypad? This is one of the major reasons that I don't use my laptop's keyboard normally - I need a numeric keypad at work. So, that rules out the Bluetooth version and I'm majorly pissed about that. The wired version is a possible but what the heck is the Function (Fn) key doing in the middle of the keyboard? Gutted. I can probably live with the wired version but the Bluetooth version is a design of madness.

Anyone know if they are lighter or heavier than the equivalent sized older iMacs?

I think that they are exactly the same weight...was looking at the tech specs and they list the new 24" at 25lbs which is what my 24" is.

I was also looking at the smaller chin and noticed that if you take the black bezel into account as part of the chin then it really may not be significantly smaller than the old chin.

I was worried that I'd be kicking myself over having bought my 24" 6 months ago but after seeing it and looking at the specs I'm not upset at all. I don't think this computer will be that much faster than mine. The new look is nice but I happen to think that my computer is gorgeous too.

No love for for iPhone/BT wireless

I thought this was funny. Too bad the iPhone can't wirelessly compete with one of Apples beloved products. This is a screen cap from the new imac wirelesss page.

DirectX has nothing to do with OpenGL.

A DirectX 9 driver can be OpenGL 2 compliant as they aren't interrelated technologies.

They address different markets and purposes.

DirectX 10 is designed for Vista exclusively.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DirectX

DirectX as you should know is a family of APIs focused on audio/video.

OpenGL is focused solely on 2D and 3D Primitives.

OpenGL Shading language adds Textures and Shading to 2D and 3D Primitives.

OpenGL 2.1 adds sRGB support, OpenGL Shading 1.2 and pixel buffering to the GPU to perform efficient Vector image transforms.

Okay, if you're going to be pedantic, replace the terms 'DX9' and 'DX10' in my previous posts with 'D3D9' and 'D3D10'.

As you should also well know, this whole argument arose out of the somewhat dubious claim that somehow a 2400xt was better than an X1600 for 10.5 despite being an inferior GPU performance-wise because it supports OpenGL 2.0 and thus Core Animation. My point is that this is a fallacy; the X1600 is just as much OpenGL 2.0 compliant as the 2400xt. The only reason I was revering to 'DX9' and 'DX10-class' GPUs is that GPU design is very much driven by the wishes of game developers and evolutions in Microsoft's Direct3D specifications, and OpenGL comes as second thought.

I JUST TESTED A GLASS OVER MY CURRENT MONITOR. IT IS QUITE UN-VIEWABLE. PHOTOS LOOK GREAT, IF I COULD ONLY SEE THEM.

Do you think Apple is stupid? It'll be well-done.

Have you seen the iPhone? That uses glass, IIRC. Looks fine.

I like the look and everything, but I'm REALLY let down by the video card options. ATI HD 2600 Pro? I'm sorry, but the Nvidia 7600GT that's in my 24" right now is about on par with the ATI. I was hoping for an upgrade in the graphics...like the Nvidia 8600GT perhaps...which is much better than the ATI card in terms of power.

Just look at all the tests on the web of the ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro compared to other cards in it's price range.

I was hoping for a little bit more. But the store is still down, maybe they offer higher end video as an option. But I doubt it.

Thumbs-down!

The black case will show smudges and dust. The keyboard is like a laptop's and doesn't have enough key travel. They rearranged the volume and Expose keys--if they're going to do that, why not just assign them randomly when each keyboard is made? Makes as much sense... Also, the black Apple logo on the front of the iMac is ugly. It should be a translucent logo on a white background like the MacBook.

Edit: Nevermind, I thought you we're talking about the wired one.
Man that sucks. No number pad on the wireless one. Glad I just bought one! :)

Been a lurker on Macrumors for a while... so finally joined :)
Im going to be a switcher from PC to Mac, as ive been using a Mac in work for nearly a year and im sold.

Im suprised the Mac Pro has not been updated... the new iMac looks great but we now have a "consumer" product with a better graphics card than a "pro" product.

Only thing stopping me from buying this is the glossy screen, im hoping there is an option not to have it.

I like the new iMac and wish I could afford one right now. I think I will just wait til Leopard is released and buy one then.

In my humble opinion and considering things from a designer's point of view...

the new iMac = Perfection. :)

I do own an iPhone. When there is glare, I move it by adjusting my hand. Easy. A 24" iMac does not lend itself to moving it out of the way.

Yes, Apple has made stupid decisions in the past. The G4 Cube is an example. The unrelenting love of the one button mouse (until recently) is another. What is wrong with offering the option? They do it on the MBP? So it must offer a premium for someone out there.

I see PCs with glossy screens at Best Buy, Costco, etc. and I cringe. Even in the stores you can't look at the screen without seeing something distracting in the reflection.
