Ack

Maybe the reason Apple refuses to build a consumer tower is the simple fact that they don't understand anything about performance/dollar. I'm also beginning to question their understanding of performance/watt given their choice of the least efficient GPU on the market today the Radeon HD.

A package currently available for the price of the entry level iMac compares as follows:

iMac PC
Core2Duo

Well, I may have to reconsider my initial reaction. The pictures on Apple's site make this thing look gorgeous. Anyone interested in a sweet deal on a near-new MBP?

new iMac Keyboard

Notice the white keys on the keyboard do not really match the dark design of the rest of the iMac - even the Apple has turned black. I think it would work better to have black keys. Of course then the Mighty Mouse would need to go black as well.

core 2 extreme

Looking on the Intel Page, they have a c2e mobile processor that is dual core. So this is a dual core. Have to wait 6 months until quad

I think they look fantastic, and I love it that they now go up to 2.8Ghz in speed. Excellent update -- now the iMac really is the best-looking Mac IMHO. It finally sets a new direction style-wise, while keeping the stylistic heritage of the iMac. Nicely done -- I'll get one for my dad as soon as 10.5 is out.

BT keyboard missing number keys ...

I agree - this is a big miss to not have the number keys on the BT keyboard.

I was all cool and digging everything until I finally muddled my way to the accessories section of the lagged Apple.com. When I saw the wireless keyboard, my initial thought was that the image hadn't finished loading yet because of the traffic.... until I realized there were arrows on that keyboard.
Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.............

I just got my BT keyboard for Christmas last year and was totally ready to plunk down what ever for the new one..... until I saw that it is the exact same as a laptop keyboard. WTF APPLE????? Why couldn't you have added the keypad right next to the compact keys on the BT version? I could get used to using FN UP AND DOWN for PG UP and PG DOWN, but taking away the key pad also???

No BT keyboard for me thank you very much!

Glossy Screens et al..

Remember back in the 90s we would buy antiglare shields to protect our eyes from screen reflection? When you're trying to read a screen with glare, it's harmful for your eyes and increases fatigue.

However, they look great on the sales floor, where you're not really using it - they want it to attract your attention. Marketing over functionality. Bleh.

Lack of a low priced 17" is a bad move. I use iMacs for a mobile teaching setup. A lack of a 17" model is bad for those looking for a lower priced iMac or those who have limited desktop space. I don't know what I'm going to use in 2 years when my current iMacs need an upgrade. I might have to go to Dell.

The new iMac blurs the line between the pro and consumer products. White was consumer and aluminum was pro. Are we now going to an all silver/black setup? Hmm....

Faster processors mean more heat which means more cooling fan activity. That's the one thing i hate about my new Santa Rosa 17" MBP over my 15" 1.83 Ghz, the fan spins up regularly. On my 15" I can play World of Warcraft with the fan only spinning at half-speed. I don't know about you guys, but I find fan noise distracting. The one thing that attracted me to Apple was the fact that their laptops had a variable speed fan which kept relatively quiet while recording audio.

When I first saw the redesign on Apple.com I wasn't sure what to think for the first couple of seconds, but I really like the redesign now. I don't know about the graphics card, but everything else is great.

There is a dual-core Intel Core 2 Extreme. I seriously doubt El Jobso would simply forget to mention quad-core iMacs at the press announcement if they really did have a quad-core option. No, I'm thinking 2.8GHz Intel Core 2 Extreme dual-core.

It is.

wait till october and see how it all washes out (with 10.5 included), or NOW!

decisions decisions

too bad no discount coupon for Aug-Sept buyers

I haven't decided whether to spring for the 24" with the 2.4, or the 24" with the 2.8 C2E. For $100 I can upgrade to 2GB ram through Crucial, so I need to decide whether $400 is worth a HDD upgrade and slightly faster processor. Anyone with advice? Is the speed difference that noticeable?

It looks like SJ was showing some screen shots of the BT keyboard which is smaller and missing the numberpad

if you look at the pics of the keyboard on apple's website, the arrow keys look more like the rumored pic and not the real pic. i think steve has himself a fake. :)

Well if anyone really hates the new bluetooth keyboard but wants the older style, I'll be selling mine soon.

Personally, I love this new keyboard. My use of the bt keyboard was to lounge and browse the web, but the old one was too bulky. Also I love the MacBook keyboard, so I think this new one is going to be an excellent product for me.

can anybody explain the key differences between the 2 intel chips? is it worth the $500 upgrade?

I don't know the performance difference in the chips, but for $500 you also get a larger HD (500 GB) and 2GB im memory.
