The rotation lock button in Control Center only appears if you have set your hardware switch to mute. If you have set the switch to rotation lock, the software mute button takes its place in Control Center.

----------

Your screenshots won't help him/her. If you have the switch set to rotation lock, it doesn't appear in CC (mute take its place).

Got it. I have mine set to lock rotation so all I see in the control center is Mute. I suppose if I set the lock switch to Mute I would see Lock Rotation in the Control Center. This just never occurred to me. lol.

Thanks everyone for the replys.

I think I would wet myself with laughter if they upped the DPI, but kept the measly 1Gig of RAM. I'm hoping for it, for comedic value alone.

Watching all the Non-critical thinking apple defenders bending over backwards to belittle those who dare question Apple, would be worth the wasted iPad year, IMHO.

While I appreciate what you're saying, I'm 63 years old. I don't have that many years left and would really appreciate it if Apple would get on the stick and upgrade the RAM in the iPad whild I'm around to enjoy it. Even my Luddite husband is complaining about the RAM and Safari reloads on his iPad.

I hope they have a matte screen version.
I'm tired of not being able to see my screen when I sit by a window or outside.

But...

In the time honoured mac rumours tradition, I'm going to state something obvious and of little import... This iPad is going to be the best one YET!

YEAH BABY! Gold, touch id, Apple Pay, A8, 2gb RAM, Full MIND HORN!!!!!!!!

I'm pre ordering on day one. Could this quite possibly be the best day of my life? I need to contemplate this thought for a while.

...can it be ordered without the Full Mind Horn? You know, for those who's minds are already Horny enough..;)

It'd be extremely stupid to get rid of the rotation lock. Maybe it's because 90% of iPad users don't even know that you can select between "mute" and "rotation lock" functionality? I'm surprised they still have volume buttons in place :D

But that'd be a deal breaker for me.

Haha, I've owned an iPad mini for almost 2 years now, and reading this thread is the first time I realized that you could use the mute switch as a rotation lock. I've always used control center to do this, but now that I know this, I'm going to start using the switch. The physical switch is way more convenient than control center -- I hope they don't get rid of it in future devices.

I am at a junction

All good and well but, iPhone 6 plus vs Note 4 ?

If apple announces no tablet companion with active digitiser stylus I will go full Samsung due to their note 4 and note pro tabs product line with active digitiser support.

Currently there is only capacitive stylus support from third party iPad accessory makers which is nothing like the real thing.

I don't see any possibility of matte screen option. I think we can expect a better ant-reflexive coating on a glossy screen.

The mute switch/rotation lock is the least sturdy thing about my ipad air. If i turn it to mute just touching the switch will activate the software to flip function back and forth so I never touch it. Maybe Apple realized this was a common point of failure or weakness and decided to get rid of it? (Obviously could also just be mine)

I would not mind seeing it go. Control center takes care of that function and also I never completely understood what the mute switch mutes (it doesn't seem to mute everything). The ipad air is my first iOS device in ages.

With my current iPad, I keep having to type the dam password in, every time I need to do updates or perhaps get a new app from the app store.

I take it, with touch ID, I would no longer need to mess with this, and remembering a long password ?

I'll be bummed if the iPad mini doesn't receive equal upgrade treatments this Thursday.

Every now and then I pang for the larger iPad, but for work and casual use, it's the perfect size for my needs.

I don't know what I'll do if just the Air gets upgraded since the double memory, faster chips, touch ID, and even thinner are hard to say no to.

Hopefully the mini gets a sweet upgrade too. It'll be an instant purchase for me.

Yep. You get asked for your password once every few days or if you restart your phone. That's it.

Once you've had Touch ID you never wanna go back.

I was thinking about that the other day, if they do get rid of the mute/rotation button, couldnt they just add a software function for it in its place?
So from the lock screen you could have a button for Mute and one for Screen Rotation. And when your iPad is unlocked you can just swipe up to reveal the same buttons in Control Center.
Or even have an option where you can set the Home button so that a triple tap will either lock the rotation or even alter the rotation and lock it at the same time.

Makes you wonder if Apple never introduced a physical switch for screen rotation would people have wanted one?
I've locked my iPad in landscape mode and any app that requires portrait mode automatically switches to that mode. So I never really need to worry about switching rotations.

As long as they don't get rid of the auto brightness sensor like they did with iPod Touch 5th gen (Grrrr!) then I'm defo getting one.

I don't know if people realize when you swipe up from the bottom of the iPad it has a screen lock there. I'm not saying they should get rid of the mute switch, I'm just not sure if some people realize what the control panel has when you swipe up from the bottom.

It has several functions for quick use.

^^Only if they also have (or know to) the physical button configured to mute.

Mine does it to but not always. I think it's a fragile part. Better to make a better part than remove it.

For sure, especially if you keep everything locked down (which you should, even to punish thieves). Great tech!

Yep, until you restart. With iOS 8 3rd party apps can use it too (so far only ,1Password which stores all my passwords anyway). I used to have to type the password on my iPhone multiple times a day, but since getting a 5s (now 6) and 1Password, I only have to type it once a week or so.

No special scaling (like on the 6 plus) will be needed for the iPad Air 2 if they go with 3x.

The iPhone 6 plus needed 489 PPI to get native 3x and since they only got a 401 PPI screen, the downscaling trick was needed to bring down the UI size to normal.

The 9.7" iPads always had a relatively lower PPI than iPhones, so to achieve native 3x, only 396 PPI is needed on the iPad (and 401 PPI is close enough).

Wish as much as you like but 9.7" won't get upgrade resolution but dual domain pixels like 6/6+ called Retina HD. 3x resolution is for larger iPad 12,9".

The iPad Air seems fine for my needs still.
My dad is still rocking his iPad 2.
My mom has an iPad mini 1st gen.

I don't think people update their iPads that often:cool:

Please give it a rest. Seriously, stop buying Apple products if they are so bad... BTW, browsing on Android phones sucks ass even with 4G of memory, and the rest of the phone also lags too. Go ahead, do it, switch.

Lol. I'm an apple/Mac user. I really dislike a few things with my air. That are 100% apple decisions to maximize $$$ at the expense of user experience. But I am not allowed to state those dislikes? Sorry, it's still a mostly free country, and I'll give my opinion.

Hoping the screen design is improved. The distance between the LCD & the front of the iPad Air makes it look really cheap.

I noticed this as well after playing with the new iPhones. Thought I was looking at a previous gen ipad.
