this is what "pros" wanted: all the ports back, long battery life and the old keyboard style. They got their wish.
this is what *some* "pros" wanted. fixed it for you. i am happy with magsafe back but the SD card slot and HDMI are useless to me. I have a USB-C device that provides both and I rarely use it. I still find it odd that Apple chose to bring either back.

14 inches is nice. But I wanna know what 16 inches feels like. Hope it's not too thick.
The numbers are right there on Apple’s site. The 16” MBP is less than 1/16” thicker (1.3mm) than the 14”. I’d be surprised if you could tell the difference in thickness between the 14” and 16” without setting them side by side.

It really doesn’t matter what anyone here thinks. They’ll have the largest bump in max sales in their history regardless. Feel free to shout into the wind tho

Balancing out the 'expanded space' that this notch gives me is the constant irritation (deriving at least partially from medically diagnosed OCD) of the existence of the notch.

Is it a purchase busting feature to/for me? Maybe; I'll have to see one of these new laptops personally before I make a final decision.

Personally I think it's gross. But, ah you know - I'm sure there are those that find abrupt discontinuities enthralling; I don't.

Go to every app you use, bring it up in Finder (heck just go through the /Applications folder), do Get Info on each app, and check the box that says to not use the upper 74px of the screen (I don’t recall the exact wording). Problem solved. You’ll have a MBP with a slightly taller than necessary top black bezel, a full 16:10 aspect ratio screen (just live every preceding MBP), and no notch visible anywhere.

I think these photos say more about the shortcomings of the iPhone* for photography than the "thickness" of the new MBP design:

Photography 101 folks: don't take close-up portraits with a short focal length lens or the exaggerated perspective will make your subject's nose look enormous in proportion to the rest of their face. Or, in this case, don't take close ups of a laptop or it will make the edge of a MacBook look ridiculously thick. Take a step back and use a longer lens! (Oh, wait, the lens is already to long to fit in the phone without a camera bulge... maybe the neural engine can fake it?)

This was most obvious in an earlier story on the subject where people complaining about the thickness failed to notice that the person holding it apparently had a thumb the size of Manhattan.

(*I'm guessing there, but what are the odds?)
Sorry I don't know photography 101. I saw the MBP in the store, but I was in a rush so I took some photos to share with MacRumors. Wasn't trying to win any awards.

Wait so they made the menu bar thicker to accomodate the notch - that is backwards.

The vietnamese video with the old and new 16" MBP next to each other is TBH painful - the new one is fricken huge!

It's much thicker. Why, Apple??

This pro is meant for many types of professionals. Only a portion of photographers care about SD cards. Lots are using other formats, for example CF.

HDMI is useful for those who need to do presentations or connect to TVs. But, most of them have already adapted to carrying a USB-C to HDMI cable or adapter. I have one in my work backpack at all times just in case. Never had to use it as every meeting, conference, etc I have been to in the last 5 years (not a small number) has already had one. Every conference room at work has USB-C, HDMI, DP, mini-DP, and VGA adapters. All our monitors are DP (which is superior to HDMI). Sorry, but it is not *most* but a small and vocal minority. They got their wish and now we are down a TB4 port for it. Not a good trade-off. A port that supports DP-2.0 (and HDMI-2, or whatever you want) lost for HDMI-2.0. Bah!

Again, it is not that much thicker. It appears so because it doesn't have beveled edges like the old one. The bevel doesn't make the old one that much smaller even. I have one on my desk right now and it is 0.64" for ~90% of its footprint. The new one is 0.66" (3% thicker) but that is at 98% of its footprint.

The 16 is definitely spec'd as a larger/heavier machine compared the current 16 MBP. I'll be able to compare them on Tues.
There's a YT video comparing the new vs old 16" in sizes, and OMG that does not bode well.

My lack of excitement for these comes from the fact that I want a slimmer, thinner, lighter 16" laptop. That is not what Apple made. They made a larger, chunkier, thicker, heavier laptop.

I don't quite understand why, but I guess it has to do with scaling the M1 to the TDP envelope of the i9 chips from Intel. So the battery must be just as enormous as before (battery life will still be WAY better which is great). And the other stuff, I don't really know why it's bigger. Isn't the M1 supposed to be easier to cool? Guess not?!

What's in that chunky enveolope? The HDMI ports? SD card - I think both of these are actually required in a pro laptop even though I don't use them personally. I fiddled with a USB-C to HDMI dongle in front of an audience just 2 weeks ago, trying to get the projector to work .... it was very bad. SD cards, I don't use, but all the photographers and videographers seem to use them, so that makes sense.

Living with a mess of dongles is not a better design.

Still - compared to my 16" MBP these are fat. I don't mind the retro round design, that's very cool IMO, and awesome; but I do mind weight and thickness.

I do hope there will be an M1 15" MacBook Air - that's really all I need, personally. I don't think my workflow will benefit from the M1Pro/Max performance gains. 10 vs 8 CPU cores yes, but I don't do anything graphics intensive.

I really hope they don't ever omit touch ID for just face ID. Using the iPad Pro in my lap with the magic keyboard is a pain constantly pulling the entire device forward so it can read my face.
Exactly how I feel. Touch ID is better in more situations. Haven’t liked it since iPhone x. Has to be close. Phone in front of your face. Not on a counter. Having it on a computer you need it close. Leaning in doesn’t sound fun. Face is just needs to die already. It’s ok when using things directly in front of your face. That’s about it.

The taper on the old design was only on the edge of the lid and on the bottom of the case. The actual keyboard area was not tapered. Those tapers were just a visual trick to make the box look slimmer and they obviously did that, but they also reduced the space inside. that limited the space for battery and for cooling. Those babies ran hot! With this new design they removed the tapered lid and tapered bottom of the case which gave more room inside for battery and for the cooling system.
The taper is a trick seen in a lot of furniture design too. I see it on the underside of tables a lot that are very thick tables to make them appear thinner and sleeker.
why they went away from this taper I’m not sure. It makes it look bloated. Illusion of a taper has been around for a long time in designs. Not just computers.

So you’re saying that Apple’s original laptops were ugly? Wow!
At the time back in 2008 they looked good. A 2008 design in 2020 after coming off a sleeker looking machine that looked more futuristic is a bit weird.
Im all for retro looking machines but making it look good while also being a throwback is trickier to do.

View attachment 1876138@Boardiesboi the menu bar looks wrong, way to thick. ?‍♂️?‍♂️?‍♂️ All because of that stupid notch. ?‍♂️

Nah just the default non-scaled macOS resolution.
When you select 'Scaled" in System Preferences > Displays > Default is what we're seeing here. Change to Show more space and I'm sure the menu bar's bottom Line will be just at the bottom of the notch. Still late 2022 update to these models may get rid of the notch all-together who knows. Apple has been listening and this is the biggest outcry of these models nothing else.
