this is what "pros" wanted: all the ports back, long battery life and the old keyboard style. They got their wish.It looks very clunky. Looks like an old HP work grade laptop. I’m not impressed by the looks of it.

this is what *some* "pros" wanted. fixed it for you. i am happy with magsafe back but the SD card slot and HDMI are useless to me. I have a USB-C device that provides both and I rarely use it. I still find it odd that Apple chose to bring either back.this is what "pros" wanted: all the ports back, long battery life and the old keyboard style. They got their wish.
Do you buy them for looks when closed or function when open?It looks very clunky. Looks like an old HP work grade laptop. I’m not impressed by the looks of it.
The numbers are right there on Apple’s site. The 16” MBP is less than 1/16” thicker (1.3mm) than the 14”. I’d be surprised if you could tell the difference in thickness between the 14” and 16” without setting them side by side.14 inches is nice. But I wanna know what 16 inches feels like. Hope it's not too thick.
“Hey Tim, this tool isn't pretty enough!”Do you buy them for looks when closed or function when open?![]()

No, no Apple does not. cf. iPhone 6-11 shells. That will split menu bar to 2. A worse design.
Showing Apple know more about design than a random macrumors poster. What a surprise.
Says the guy with the iPad mini…
The limiting factor will be the worldwide supply chain and shipping, not customer demand. It really doesn’t matter what anyone here thinks. They’ll have the largest bump in max sales in their history regardless. Feel free to shout into the wind tho
Go to every app you use, bring it up in Finder (heck just go through the /Applications folder), do Get Info on each app, and check the box that says to not use the upper 74px of the screen (I don’t recall the exact wording). Problem solved. You’ll have a MBP with a slightly taller than necessary top black bezel, a full 16:10 aspect ratio screen (just live every preceding MBP), and no notch visible anywhere.Balancing out the 'expanded space' that this notch gives me is the constant irritation (deriving at least partially from medically diagnosed OCD) of the existence of the notch.
Is it a purchase busting feature to/for me? Maybe; I'll have to see one of these new laptops personally before I make a final decision.
Sorry I don't know photography 101. I saw the MBP in the store, but I was in a rush so I took some photos to share with MacRumors. Wasn't trying to win any awards.I think these photos say more about the shortcomings of the iPhone* for photography than the "thickness" of the new MBP design:
Photography 101 folks: don't take close-up portraits with a short focal length lens or the exaggerated perspective will make your subject's nose look enormous in proportion to the rest of their face. Or, in this case, don't take close ups of a laptop or it will make the edge of a MacBook look ridiculously thick. Take a step back and use a longer lens! (Oh, wait, the lens is already to long to fit in the phone without a camera bulge... maybe the neural engine can fake it?)
This was most obvious in an earlier story on the subject where people complaining about the thickness failed to notice that the person holding it apparently had a thumb the size of Manhattan.
(*I'm guessing there, but what are the odds?)
This pro is meant for many types of professionals. Only a portion of photographers care about SD cards. Lots are using other formats, for example CF.This is what *most* “pros” wanted. Fixed it for you. Maybe you are just not the pro this laptop is meant for…no matter what your thoughts on your usage are
Again, it is not that much thicker. It appears so because it doesn't have beveled edges like the old one. The bevel doesn't make the old one that much smaller even. I have one on my desk right now and it is 0.64" for ~90% of its footprint. The new one is 0.66" (3% thicker) but that is at 98% of its footprint.Wait so they made the menu bar thicker to accomodate the notch - that is backwards.
The vietnamese video with the old and new 16" MBP next to each other is TBH painful - the new one is fricken huge!
It's much thicker. Why, Apple??
There's a YT video comparing the new vs old 16" in sizes, and OMG that does not bode well. The 16 is definitely spec'd as a larger/heavier machine compared the current 16 MBP. I'll be able to compare them on Tues.
Exactly how I feel. Touch ID is better in more situations. Haven’t liked it since iPhone x. Has to be close. Phone in front of your face. Not on a counter. Having it on a computer you need it close. Leaning in doesn’t sound fun. Face is just needs to die already. It’s ok when using things directly in front of your face. That’s about it.I really hope they don't ever omit touch ID for just face ID. Using the iPad Pro in my lap with the magic keyboard is a pain constantly pulling the entire device forward so it can read my face.
The taper is a trick seen in a lot of furniture design too. I see it on the underside of tables a lot that are very thick tables to make them appear thinner and sleeker. The taper on the old design was only on the edge of the lid and on the bottom of the case. The actual keyboard area was not tapered. Those tapers were just a visual trick to make the box look slimmer and they obviously did that, but they also reduced the space inside. that limited the space for battery and for cooling. Those babies ran hot! With this new design they removed the tapered lid and tapered bottom of the case which gave more room inside for battery and for the cooling system.
At the time back in 2008 they looked good. A 2008 design in 2020 after coming off a sleeker looking machine that looked more futuristic is a bit weird. So you’re saying that Apple’s original laptops were ugly? Wow!
I think these 14" MBP's will enable more work in mobile workflows and a LOT less limitations.Regardless what you think it looks like, it brings great power in a small package. Could be a game changer for mobile workflows.
