New Images Offer Even Closer Look at New 14-Inch MacBook Pro

Design is all about little things. It's clear you don't care about little things and may not understand design even. If you're a designer I already feel sorry for your clients.
That is clearly a non answer lol. It’s “about the little things“, okay Johnny Ive. You clearly think it’s good just cause Apple decided it was good and can’t really respond with your actual opinion, so you come up with a BS reply like this.
“How is it the easy way out?”
“Design is about the little things”
Okay?

Not exactly. If the menu is around the notch it still means that smaller notch would do a better job. So back to my first post, this is not THE BEST technical solution what could Apple find.

Moreover, the notch also means some problems for software. Eg. Photoshop in my languare and resolution has more and longer menu items that go to the center of the screen. So under the notch.

The notch is smaller than the menu therefore the notch should be even smaller? That doesn't really make any sense. The Menu bar doesn't have physical limitations, it actually looks as though the menu bar is bigger to accommodate the notch. That it goes slightly under the notch is clearly an aesthetic decision that only Apple can explain.

Until people actually start using the machines we don't know for sure how it will or won't get in the way of menu items but I don't see it as a major issue right now.

I don't think there is a better technical solution, there are just different technical solutions. Linus tech tips indicated that they would prefer a camera bump, perhaps you would prefer a bump. I don't want a bump, I don't think the notch is the greatest thing ever but I don't think it's the disaster that some are claiming it is.
If the notch ends up being the biggest complaint about these new Macbooks Pro after, well people are still complaining about the butterfly keyboard a year after it was killed so I'd say Apple has succeeded.

C’mon now, this isn’t Jony trolling is it? Are you Jony, trying to cause an undercurrent stir and the raising of pitchforks so Apple can announce the 2023 MBP to be .2 inches thinner?

Jony would have gotten a stroke if this design came out of his studio. But I think this time the real techies like John Ternus and Joz won here.

These pics are trying to fool you. That menu bar is so huge. They have the scaling turned way down to like 800x600 resolution. I'm looking at the menu bar on my MacBook Pro right now and it is very close to the apple logo on top and bottom and it's not even set to normal. I have bad eyes so I make everything bigger by lowering the resolution. I can guarantee for most users that notch is going to go beyond the menu bar into their content.

Since we are jabbering on about this in a seemingly endless stream of comments...

My personal reflection (after just spending what, 4K USD+ on one of these new machines) is that I am peculiarly unexcited about it. I have bought many new computers over many years and usually this fill me with a sense of excitement and sense of new opportunities. This (fugly but fast machine) gives me absolutely nothing of that... a first time for an Apple product... it just feels like a practical purchase, "yeah whatever, I need a new machine and I will put it somewhere on my next and get on with my work" kind of thing. Kind of sad... and I know people spoke elsewhere in this thread about sexiness, or lack thereof, so I guess this is just another not particularly valuable addition to that theme.

Happy faster working everyone.

I'm excited by MBP practicality this go-around and can't wait to replace my 2017 workhorse.

Was actually getting tired of the dongles, and for years I would to run to conference rooms or auditoriums with 10% wireless, 90% HDMIs, or worse some 1% dump place with VGA. So the people who kept saying HDMI is old or something, probably never take their MBP anywhere.

Even though I don’t like that stupid lame notch I would take one of these in a heartbeat if it still had windows support like the intel models did. Seems to me Apple thew in a big big monkey wrench when they dropped support for windows.

In full screen mode, I understand the display stops at the bottom of the notch, so when in full screen, how much additional screen real estate do you really pick-up over the current 13.3 inch MBP/MBA? Also, the new MBP seems to have a larger footprint than the old MBP, so are you really getting much additional usable screen for the added size (and weight +0.5lbs)? I guess I need to see it in person to really judge.

Good freakin' Lord...I genuinely did not expect this amount of criticism after the announcement. Apple has ostensibly delivered a machine which addresses almost every single complaint Pro users have been vocal about for the past 5 years. For me, there are so many "little things" that will make life so much easier. Anyone else frustrated with how in all current Macbook/Pros that apps in full screen forces you to play tag with the menu bar hiding then appearing just in time to block you as you attempt to utilize some function in the top bar of said app (I'm sure there are many apps which have designed around this, but there are still many Pro Apps which have their own design language and workflows which shouldn't need to redesign a workaround). It's a small thing but I'm freaking stoked to not have to option+max every window....I have a feeling that most of the people complaining about the thickness or lack of tapering never got a chance to use any of Apple's pre-unibody notebooks. The titanium Powerbook and even the that first gen MacBook Pro are hands down my favorite form factor, and I know there are tons of old school Apple fans that agree. Personally, this new machine is the most exciting thing I have seen from Apple since the introduction of the iPhone. I came so very close to switching over to PC right before the introduction of Apple Silicon last year. So glad I dodged that bullet, and so very glad that in a very real way, Apple seems to be returning to "Computer company that makes smartphones" and not the other way around. (I know this is largely a meme, but it really did feel like macOS was headed for death just 2 years ago). Guess there's always gonna be haters

14 inches is nice. But I wanna know what 16 inches feels like. Hope it's not too thick.
the 14 inch already looks thick and clunky. The 16 inch will be ugly I think.

It looks great, but that notch is horrible. What happens when the menus are too long, or there are too many icons on the right (I'm a big fan of iStatMenus). They will be covered up by the notch. How about videos in full screen? We're supposed to accept a black notch at the top of the video? This seems like a really awful compromise, especially considering how rarely I use the camera.
I would accept a MacOS "fix" that pretends the top X number of pixels don't exist, just so I don't have that notch getting in the way of my work.

Edit: From further reading, I see that during full-screen app use, like videos, the vertical size of the screen is reduced to not include the notch. I would still prefer to have this an always-on feature, and should be easy. Let's see what Apple does. They made changes quickly when people complained about the translucent menu bar in 10.7 (or thereabouts).

That “fix” is already there. The area of the screen that the notch intrudes into is MORE SCREEN on top of the standard 16:10 aspect ratio. Think of it like a minor addition to the screen area rather than a notch that cuts into the already existing screen area.

When an app is in fullscreen, the “extra” part of the screen (where the notch is) will black out completely. It won’t intrude into videos or apps. You can also choose to have the menu bar always visible in fullscreen apps and it will show the menu bar in the notch area instead of blacking it out.

finally, developers can choose to use the notch area, like for buttons and stuff

You can see how much higher off the desk the bottom of the body is due to the increased height of the feet - adds to the illusion of increased thickness, but likely helps with giving the chassis room to breathe for cooling.
It doesn’t matter, the appearance of it is thick and clunky. Apple took several steps back in design in exchange for function and utility. I’m not a Pro so passing up on these is an easy choice.

Though the rumor is that the 2022 MacBook/Air will take design cues from the Pros. However, I can see them remaining thinner since they don't need room for legacy ports, and the M2 SOC will be more efficient than the M1 if the A15 vs. A14 is any indication.

Which Macs have USB-B connectors on them?
Macs are hosts not devices. There is a difference. Intel, in their infinite stupidity, defined two connectors initially (and stuck with it until USB-C): A - host, B - device. I don't really care what their reasons werer but it was incredibly dumb then and even worse now.

A bit of history/ On Macs USB replaced Mini DIN-8 Serial and ADB (Apple Desktop Bus). Neither of these were particularly great but ADB was superior to PS/2 and supported daisy-chaining which USB does not (Apple's USB keyboards are also HUB devices). PC keyboard still follow the old PS/2 convention and don't act as hubs. Totally irrelevant to USB-A vs USB-C but someone else mentioned USB-A being better than Serial and Parallel. It is but both ADB and Mini DIN-8 were not terrible like PC ports :).

Happy to wait for that

I don't know about anyone else, but I think the OS should superimpose a giant mouse cursor over the video when the mouse moves into the notch area, would make for some fun Zoom antics :D
