Sorry but what a bad move. Should have been 2nd gen pencil given the price increase. That and the price made me pass on this for an air instead. Which was their plan all along I suppose?
My only thinking for this ridiculous dongle/lack of support for 2nd gen is that the landscape camera impacts the ability/space in the bezel for magnetic charging and connection needed for the second gen, other than that it’s crazy

Wow, major fail IMO. Bad enough they stuck with the 1st gen Apple Pencil from 2015. The user experience should be as simple and elegant as possible; it isn't now that people who buy this iPad are forced to keep track of yet another adapter.

The first-generation Apple Pencil came with a female to female Lightning adapter allowing it to be charged separately, but now Apple is offering a new variant of the accessory called the "USB-C to Apple Pencil Adapter" that enables Apple Pencil users to charge.
They're still selling the Apple Pencil V1!? Does it now come with an "off" switch to stop it draining the battery to destruction and becoming a $99 brick if you forget to re-charge it?

if you look at their reasons for not including the charge brick for iphone, environmental, seeing them do stuff like this is stupid.
if they just kept the magnetic strip on it and it supported 2nd gen only that would be less shipping of new products (only selling 2nd gen). and not to mention less broken/lost adaptors. it’s utterly embarrassing
Agreed, It’s beyond disappointing. I wonder how durable the adapters are too. It looks like this is a single piece of rigid plastic; I know the 3.5mm adapters were known for being very failure-prone, but those included that flimsy little bit of coated wire in the middle.

I understand product differentiation by feature-set, I do. But this is just disappointing to say the least. I think they should just eliminate the iPad Air. The M-series chips are in the Pros, and most people wouldn’t care much about the laminated display vs buying the cheaper new iPad with the non-laminated display, imo.

iPad mini, iPad and iPad Pro. Nice, simple, understandable.

Love how my original 'WTF' response was deleted when the first page of responses are almost exclusively people responding with one word... because this is a ridiculous solution to an iPad released in 2022!

This is an especially mean decision by Apple to differentiate the 'base' iPad from the Air. The only thing I can think of is:

1) They expect previous 'base' iPad owners will want to upgrade and this way they don't have to buy a new pencil.

2) The technology to support Apple Pencil 2 is more expensive and cuts into their margin such that they couldn't hit the target price point.

I personally doubt that it is either. This just seems so mean of Apple to not support Pencil 2 and push people up the pricing ladder for a superior experience. 1st Generation Pencil is excellent, but the whole charging thing is clunky and outdated. I only started using Apple Pencil with Gen 2 because it's always ready and always on my iPad.

Ugh Apple. Just ugh.

Who buys this ipad? Who upgrades the 8th or 9th model? Standart iPad owners. So, should they throw their first generation Apple pencil in the trash? no. So, this dongle was necessary. but Apple's mistake was that they should also support the 2nd generation apple pencil. Whether you have a first-gen or last-gen pencil, they should have worked with this iPad. Apple would even receive praise if it was presented this way.

Why not just have it support the Pencil 2 with the magnetic charging? Or maybe no pencil use at all? This is stupid. If you need a Pencil just get the Air (which is probably what Apple wants).

So... can we use this adapter with the iPad Air/Pros? Meaning you can now use the Apple Pencil 1st gen with any USB-C iPad? Or will they software block it to only work with the 10th gen iPad?
