Any information anywhere about the weight of the new keyboard? It looks cool, but if it ads a ton of weight, to me that cancels one of the great advantages of the iPad.

How is the keyboard $349 when the Surface Pro X keyboard is $139.99. That's also more than half the price of $649 Pixelbook Go Chromebook with a more proper OS.

LiDAR is a bit of an exaggeration when it's limited to 5 meters. Time of flight laser would be more truthful.

Because it’s not the same keyboard as the one on the Surface Pro? Think of it as buying a Magic keyboard, Magic mouse and a stand. I agree if you want to save money then a Chromebook is the way to go.

Not unprecedented:

March 7, 2012 - Apple released the iPad 3.

Then:

November 2, 2012 - Apple released the iPad 4.

This is why you see some people brining up the "iPad 3 Debacle."

:apple:
I was more talking about the Pro line specifically.

I’ve just installed 13.4 and hooked up a standard Magic Trackpad. It’s a nice experience most of the time. When I’m at a desk or table I’ll definitely prefer this from scrolling pages. I don’t like how the cursor is hidden when you point to a button though, it spoils the feeling of control.

The $349 keyboard here suggest though that Apple could be on another path. An iPad Pro squared ( super pro. or iPad Pro Max , iPad Pro XDR .... or some additional adjective that pragmatically means higher price. ). Where just make it even more expensive well up into the upper MBP 13" - lower MBP 16" price zone. ).

Super deluxe mini LED screen and deluxe A14X would be excuse just to crank up the price levels even higher. Most folks wouldn't follow so iPad Pro would stay a bit longer on 12X before a later bump to A14X ( and some other cherry on top created the "Pro Max" variant.)

An "Apple playbook" path to making the A12Z a short term chip is if Apple shifts the volume over AppleTV at some point. At which point it wouldn't be a "short term" chip anymore. Just short term to the iPad Pro.

I'm in need of an update. I've been currently using my 12" MacBook Retina (Early 2015) model. I was about to update to a new MacBook Pro. But now that the new iPad Pro with magic keyboard with trackpad is here. I'm not sure which route to go. Any suggestions?

Would an iPad Pro 11 with the new magic trackpad keyboard be better than getting a MacBook Pro 13? I currently use my MacBook to surf, email, chat, watch videos, and ocassionally light graphic design work and some word processing and desktop publishing with Pages.

Let's hope so. We'll know soon, just have to wait for the bend tests. 🙈
Or just don't try to bend your computer? I guess to some people spending 1k on an iPad is a small amount but for me I would take care of it. I have my cheap Chromebook for a throw around computer.

I like this for plane flights but... I still don't really see the advantage over a 14" MBP unless it's just cheaper. A traditional laptop is probably still more comfortable to use in bed and with a mouse.

A productivity iPad for a plane and a laptop with mouse in bed? Not sure on both fronts.

is this true? The 2018 iPad Pro can use the new keyboard folio with track pad? Take my money!!!

Yup. Just like many accessories for gen 1 worked for gen 2 which had roughly the same form factor. Gives them a chance to sell stuff to existing owners for a while.

Definitely the iPad Pro 11 with trackpad.

A12Z.

That's just an awful name.

Is A13X taken?

Or maybe the A13X will end up in a MacBook Arm?
A13X is still on 7nm and likely didn’t represent a large enough upgrade vs the A12X. In a practical sense, the A10X is more powerful than iPadOS, never mind the significantly more powerful A12X. Making ever increasingly powerful chips hindered by iPadOS doesn’t make a lot of sense. There’s nothing in iPadOS that taxes the A12X as it is.

Oh how convenient. And I guess all those who claim it bend while being transported in the same bag as a previous iPad or who had it bent in the box all made that up. Quick, head on over to the MacBook Pro discussions where you can then educate those users on what you think they did wrong to have the keyboard fail.

I got an entire 2018 i5 HP laptop w/256 NVMe for less than the cost of this stupid keyboard.

I agree with this. If you like it then buy it. If not then don't. So many people love the iPad but it doesn't fit everyone's needs

The advantage here is that you have an ipad which you can detach from the keyboard when all you need is the tablet portion.

As a teacher, the Smart Keyboard design has been extremely convenient. I can type at my desk when I need to, then remove the ipad with a simple tug when I want to move around the classroom with Apple Pencil in hand.

The added versatility is where you are spending the premium here.
