If the render is true, That is the best looking iPad yet. The iPhone 4 was extremely durable and easy to hold because of the squared edges.

And how many people are actually using headphones with an iPad day to day?
I do, everyday, to edit sound files for my job in radio, often while charging. And granted, I’m in the minority...but can the “majority” justify the removal of a perfectly functional accessory, for no other known reason than being minisuculy thinner, or driving EarPods sales?

Don't know if I'm a fan of removing the home button (Touch ID) from the iPad. Face ID works fine (great) on my iPhone X. But the way I use my iPad Pro 12.9". Lifting it up, looking at it, and swiping up to unlock it is not natural. I unlock it now with my thumb when picking it up to move it. I do this with out even have to look at it.

I like doing that with my phone as well.

I just dont buy these rumors that the new Smart Keyboard will only work in portrait. That’s thorughly ridiculous. The rumored Smart port placement is bewildering but I have to assume it’s part of some newly designed keyboard that cradles the iPad up the sides or something to that effect. Perhaps there is a larger keyboard ‘clam shell’ design in the works? Or perhaps there are two smart connectors? But the worst case assumptions that have plagued these message boards for the last month just seem off this time. Even if Face ID only works in portrait, I dont see that as a reason to redesign the smart connector. Using a password isn’t actually the end of the world. If anything I would think the new placement has more to do with some sort of Apple Pencil application then anything.

Assuming this is fairly accurate, I want to hear their justification for removing the headphone jack from an iPad. If Phil Schiller says "bravery" or "courage" I hope someone throws a rotten tomato at him.

Apple knows what's best for you.
[doublepost=1536077226][/doublepost]I like the look of it. Reminds me a Surface Pro 4. Boy did Apple rip off their design or what...... :)

Wait till you hear what they’ve done with the MacBook Pro!

They must have a new Smart Keyboard design where the back support travels further up the back of the iPad and connects to the Smart Connector there, on its side. No way Apple expects people to type in portrait mode only.

It honestly wouldn't surprise me if they released a keyboard case that made the iPad like a laptop and charged $149 for it. Kind of like a Surface.

Edit: Just to clarify. Kind of like a Surface meaning a separate accessory that costs a bunch that works with the device.

I doubt it looks 100 percent like the image..anyone can draw something up..but whatever it ends up being I hope they show it off next week :-

You're missing all the fun!

Oh, I am getting excited over new tech. The design is just not the primary reason why I buy it. Function over form. If I like the form, that's a plus. Hence, I don't get when people demand new designs just for the sake of them being "new" without actual need or improved functionality or other benefits. But then, I'm not one of those who buy a new iPhone every year just because I can (or just because I want to show off). It's simply not necessary. And thus I don't care if designs stay the same for years. As I said, the iMac has essentially been the same for over 10 years....and as someone else pointed out, there only are that many ways you can design a glass-metal plate.

I'd rather have a lower quality camera than the bump, yes.
There's always the extreme method of filing off the camera bump when you don't the camera at all. The camera is certainly less important on an iPad than on an iPhone. The iPhone got its camera bump in 2014 with the iPhone 6, the iPad only got in 2017 (only on the iPad Pro).

Why in the world would they create a design like that? What incentive would there be to put the smart connector on the bottom unless you intended it to be used that way?
Likely to make space for reconfigured internals. They seem to want the Smart Connector directly above the Lightning port. They will likely introduce a new smart keyboard case, which will create a quasi-laptop form factor. It's the only realistic explanation. Apple will not restrict the smart keyboard to portrait mode.

Can't imagine there ever being a justifiable reason to have a protruding camera on the back of an iPad.

Well, perhaps you are not imagining hard enough?
Like, if you cannot make the camera as thin as the iPad, for example.

Thicker iPad, lesser camera or protruding lens.
Some compromise needs to happen. Pick your preference.

Serial mobile leaker Steve Hemmerstoffer shared high-resolution renders today, courtesy of tech blog MySmartPrice, that are based on supposed leaked CAD images of Apple's upcoming redesigned iPad Pro.

Reliable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has said Apple is working on two new iPad Pro models that take design cues from the iPhone X, measuring in at 11 and 12.9-inches.

In addition to the thinner bezels, no Home button, and edge-to-edge display of the expected iPad Pro design, the mocked-up renders depict a device with an angular chassis boasting iPhone 4-style chamfered edges, rather than the rounded chassis of the current-generation tablet.

In another seeming nod to Apple's evolving iPhone handset design, the device is shown with separate antenna strips along the top and bottom edges of the chassis, instead of the single continuous antenna lines on either side of the existing cellular models.

Elsewhere, a closer look reveals a distinct lack of headphone jack, two rows of speaker vents on either side of the Lightning port - similar to the alleged CAD images leaked last month - and two microphone ports located above the TrueDepth camera embedded in the bezel.

Also like the CAD image before it, a Smart Connector is positioned on the back of the device directly above the Lightning port, instead of the landscape orientation on current iPad Pro models.

MySmartPrice claims the positioning is related to the limitations of Face ID in landscape orientation, however well-connected Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman has said horizontal Face ID support is a feature in the upcoming iPad Pro models, which are expected to be announced this month.

The legitimacy of the additional details in the renders - and the alleged leaked CAD images they are supposedly based on - have yet to be confirmed, but Apple's scheduled media event on September 12 should reveal all.

The rumor content was expected. After all, current iPhone sizes make iPhone as a “mini” iPad as they almost have all iPad capabilities and iPad has almost all iPhone capabilities except for calling. They are using the same operating systems: iOS.

Ha. I'd say the casing is a cross between iphones 5 and 7, with screen from the X.

Also, if the "smart" connector is actually located at the lightning jack it has to be a friggin' genius connector if it's going to work with a smart cover in landscape mode.

Likely because the amount of people using wired headphones with an iPad is a super small minority.

What kind of reasoning is that? Do you have stats?
It is like saying that they took the home button away because it is used by a super small minority.

I don't have Bluetooth headphones. I have no interest in Bluetooth headphones.
But Apple is making sure I will have to buy some soon. Bah

You're on a forum, where opinions are stated, I stated my opinion based on what I see in day to day life.

Try out AirPods. You wont go back to wired after using them assuming they fit.

How about: bigger camera module = better pictures

How about use an actual camera for taking pictures? Pictures on an iPad will never be as good as those taken with a dedicated camera. Or your phone. And yes, I judge people who think they are "photographers" using iPads to take the pictures. I get the "scanning documents" part (I use my iPhone for that), but frankly, you don't need even better optics for that. It's a "just because they can" thing and absolutely not necessary on an IPAD. I've never used the back-facing camera on my iPad mini even once in all the years that I've owned it...

I love them on my 5s. Much secure grip than the too-slippery 6S and beyond.

Always interesting to see how experiences differ so greatly. I hated the 5S for the design. It hurt my hand when holding it for longer than just a few minutes (e.g. when reading something). I'm absolutely not thrilled about the squared edges on this render - I don't think it will be comfortable to hold and you're bound to hold an iPad much longer than a phone...

I'm leaning more towards earbud sales. Funny how so many people are claiming nobody uses wired headphones, yet I have not seen any polls, studies, statistics, or anything to back up that claim. Nothing.

If we want to look at sales, it appears Bluetooth lags way behind wireless headphone sales.

I certainly don't hope Apple destroys the whole iPad pro experience (connecting a keyboard and typing in landscape) just because they absolutely have to have Faceid. It would make multitasking useless. I cannot image Apple doing that. There must be something we don't know from the rumors.

But Apple is making sure I will have to buy some soon.

I certainly empathize. You can use the lighting to 3.5 mm adapter but I understand that's less than ideal for some.

On my phone I never knew whether the headphone jack even worked because I never, ever used it. It was always Bluetooth in my car or Bluetooth headphones. On my iPad I actually use both wired and wireless headphones so I'd miss the headphone jack a little, but for me it wouldn't be the end of the world.

Contrast that with the new butterfly keyboard, which I absolutely hate compared to their previous model. Or their removal of wired Ethernet in laptops, which I also used all the time.

I think it's safe to say there's plenty of opportunity to keep the headphone jack as many use it, but Apple seems to want a single sheet of glass for their phones and tablets--no ports, no buttons, etc. Removing the headphone jack is a step in that direction... whether we like it or not.

Everyone is always whining about headphones jacks. Buy air pods, they’re the greatest thing apples made in many years by far. It’s been years since I used a headphone jack on an iPad anyways

because a pair of wired headphones half the price will sound twice as good, and not require charging
