Can't imagine there ever being a justifiable reason to have a protruding camera on the back of an iPad.

Apple stopped caring about good design several years ago. Their aesthetics look, frankly, like crap. From the camera protruding to the notch — all things Steve wouldn’t tolerate. It’s ugly. It doesn’t flow.

Looks good to me, I’m ready for an update.
I like the Face ID and hope it works in landscape.
iPad Pro 1st gen goes to my son.

So, you'd either prefer an iPad that is 20% thicker and heavier or an inferior camera to having a camera bump?

I'd rather have a lower quality camera than the bump, yes.

I use the camera often to scan documents

This is what I use my iPad camera for all the time. But we don't need a super high quality camera for it.

Nevertheless, I do recognize that, for some reason, people love taking pictures with their iPads.

How the hell can Apple not fix Face ID horizontal limitation with a simple software workaround? I'm stumped. This is a stupid issue.

I agree. Though I think Apple would say they care about design, it's just that their definition of design is different than what some people want. I think part of the problem is that Jon Ives has no checks and balances in place because Tim is a operations guy, not a creative guy; so Ives gets free reign to do whatever he wants.

I dislike this obsession with thinness. While I'm looking forward to the home button being gone (I only use it for Touch ID on my iPad), I don't like how they "redefine" laptop keyboards just to save fractions of a millimeter.

Maybe IRL these rumoured iPad designs will be nice, but the images suggest the square sides will make holding the device uncomfortable. I guess we'll find out soon enough.

All the people complaining about the camera bump... iPads have had that for a while. While I think it's annoying (and I've never even used the camera on mine), it's not a dealbreaker. I honestly never even notice it.

The headphone jack is absolutely essential for doing latency free recordings with our lavalier microphone when doing vlogs. The lightning port is used for the power supply because the screen is always on and it can take some hours. Any wireless mic is unusable for this....

Hope this render is far from reality...
What you describe is a super small minority. I am not debating the usefulness of the headphone jack, but the amount of people actually using the headphone jack on an iPad day to day has to be a super small minority. I never use it myself, but I can understand that some people do see the benefit to it.

Serial mobile leaker Steve Hemmerstoffer shared high-resolution renders today, courtesy of tech blog MySmartPrice, that are based on supposed leaked CAD images of Apple's upcoming redesigned iPad Pro.

Reliable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has said Apple is working on two new iPad Pro models that take design cues from the iPhone X, measuring in at 11 and 12.9-inches.

In addition to the thinner bezels, no Home button, and edge-to-edge display of the expected iPad Pro design, the mocked-up renders depict a device with an angular chassis boasting iPhone 4-style chamfered edges, rather than the rounded chassis of the current-generation tablet.

In another seeming nod to Apple's evolving iPhone handset design, the device is shown with separate antenna strips along the top and bottom edges of the chassis, instead of the single continuous antenna lines on either side of the existing cellular models.

Elsewhere, a closer look reveals a distinct lack of headphone jack, two rows of speaker vents on either side of the Lightning port - similar to the alleged CAD images leaked last month - and two microphone ports located above the TrueDepth camera embedded in the bezel.

Also like the CAD image before it, a Smart Connector is positioned on the back of the device directly above the Lightning port, instead of the landscape orientation on current iPad Pro models.

MySmartPrice claims the positioning is related to the limitations of Face ID in landscape orientation, however well-connected Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman has said horizontal Face ID support is a feature in the upcoming iPad Pro models, which are expected to be announced this month.

The legitimacy of the additional details in the renders - and the alleged leaked CAD images they are supposedly based on - have yet to be confirmed, but Apple's scheduled media event on September 12 should reveal all.

It even has a camera bump!! So Cool!! If this is true, it just further shows how moronic Apple's designers have become.

Groovy. If only the design included the OS's integrated ability to utilize Skype as the phone service, as the iPhone version of iOS does, instead of leaving it in but just blocking the phone dialer from fully launching.
Perhaps a consistent app switcher & split pane multitasking behavior.
Perhaps extending your mac desktop onto the device via the fast USB-C cable instead of just crippling the existing 3rd party services and presenting no alternative.
Perhaps a million things.
Lol no what am I saying, what the ipad really needs is a change to the radius of the casings edges.

The iPads weakness is not its hardware.

?
I'd love to see the data you're basing this on.
Based on the amount of iPads I see in the wild and how many have headphones plugged into them. Nothing more, nothing less. Clearly Apple agrees if they are planning to ditch it (assuming these renders are accurate).

It’s a connector to hold and charge the new pencil. It’s not the smart connector for the keyboard, which is still in the same old place (render is wrong)

I am psychic.
WHOA. I've never met a real psychic.

This is the best answer yet. Inductive micro charging then?

Since Face ID only works in portrait, the new iPad will only work in portrait. Hence the placement of the Smart Connector. Apple will include revolutionary software to rotate images so you can view while laying on your side.

Interesting, design cues really do recycle. This iPad looks like a blend of the current gen iPhone (screen shape and bezels) but with the edges of the iPhone 4/5.

How is wireless an improvement?the sound quality is lower by a good margin, it is far more expensive, and you have to charge. This is nothing like floppy disk to CD which is a big improvement.

“Oh it’s the future” in what way? Where is the improvement? Wireless headphones already existed so it added nothing.
You don't see the improvement in not being physically tied to the device? The amount of times I have ripped the headphones out of my ears when turning my head is too high to count. Sure maybe the sound quality isn't quite as good, honestly I do not care one iota. Most people aren't audiophiles. I charge my AirPods maybe once a week? Really just whenever the thought to charge them pops in my head. Not once in the ~2 years I have owned them have they been out of battery. I guess its more expensive, but really that depends on how much you want to spend. You can find wireless headphones on amazon for $15.

You argue sound quality on one hand and then argue for price on the other. You can't have that both ways.

Go for a run with wired headphones tied to your phone....
Now go for a run with AirPods and your watch...
You will see what I mean by "its the future". You will see the improvement.

"Wireless headphones already existed so it added nothing."
What is your point here? Yes they existed. A lot of people are moving to wireless, that is why Apple removed the jack in the first place.

And how many aren't? Way more.

Honestly, the design can’t be really the reason? I mean do You have a usecase for the ipad, or why would You buy one?

I find your comment very disturbing

Lmaoo what are you even talking about? My comment is disturbing?

I haven’t owned an iPad since 2010, as I said. A LOT has changed since then. Obviously I have a usecase for the iPad. What am I gonna do? Buy it and leave it in the box?

And obviously the design is part of it, but that’s not the only reason.

It’s scary that my comment (which was very basic) left you feeling disturbed. Yikes.

I have never owned an iPad, and this one might pop my cherry.

Yeah man, do it! The existing line is already great. But now with thinner bezels, Face ID and other features we don’t know about will make this one the best yet.

I guess I am the only one that really likes this judging by the comments lol. I think it's siiiick!

Apple’s tendency in the industrial design of its products is almost always bilateral symmetry along the X, Y and Z axes. The sole exceptions are the iMac and MacBook Air; even the MacBook Pros are symmetrical when closed, and likewise the AirPods when they’re inside their case. The chamfered-edge iPad design that debuted with the iPad mini does not follow this design language, as it is more of a shallow tray than a perfect slab. It makes sense that Apple would bring the iPad back in line with its other products at some point.

Oh And if this redesign is true, I think we are going to have an October Event as well. Unless there are no new iMac / Mac mini Redesign.....

Far too little time for iPhone, Apple Watch, Redesigned iMac , Mac mini and Redesigned iPad.

Actually the problem with removing the notch is ironic - if you're holding the ipad in landscape mode and you can't see which side the camera is on, I'm willing to bet that your hand will block the FaceID camera most of the time. I mean, where you you expect to hold the iPad, in the corners? "You're holding it wrong" all over again?

I'm already covering the camera when I hold my iPad Pro currently, but it's not a security need, the button is. So to authenticate to the iPad in landscape mode we're going to have to re-orient and gingerly hold it by the corners?

I get that I might be defining a limited use case, but I really do think of a lot of times I'm sitting on a plane, or lying in bed where this would and could be a problem.
