Likely because the amount of people using wired headphones with an iPad is a super small minority.

The headphone jack is absolutely essential for doing latency free recordings with our lavalier microphone when doing vlogs. The lightning port is used for the power supply because the screen is always on and it can take some hours. Any wireless mic is unusable for this....

I can’t decide which decision would be worse... portrait only FaceID or the smart connector being on the bottom.

I love my ASK how it is now. I couldn’t imagine using a keyboard in portrait mode.. The keyboard would either be tiny or have some weird fold out thing

Hope this render is far from reality...

That damn camera bumb has been the reason for me not to get the second iPad Pro!
(First iPad Pro goes without it just fine)

Hello Apple, we use this device for drawing..meaning it has to be able to lay on a flat surface! Not everyone is using the extra plastic/silikon protection stuff for his device just to get rid of your bad design camera bumbs..so pls get rid of that!

No. Just buy a Lighting to 3.5 mm Headphone Jack Adapter!

I don't dislike the adapter or its purpose but I've had way too many occasions where I did not have the adapter with me and I wanted to connect a jack (either for playing music in a non-bluetooth enabled car or on a hi-fi system in someone else house while visiting). To me it's still a dumb idea to have it removed...

I bought a Huawei P20 Pro (fantastic phone and camera) but the lens bump means you need a pretty thick case which sticks out further than the lens so you can put it down on any surface without fear of scratching the lens. Is annoying and would be a factor in deciding my next phone for sure.

As long as I still get colorful smart covers that attach to the side, better speakers and no home button... I’m in. I also want the camera bump, I want a 12mp good camera and 4K 60fps video recording as I don’t always take my phone to places, and recording it straight on the iPad where I’d edit it, would be perfect.
Also the 12.9” iPad is supposedly going to be 6.4mm and the 10.5” is going to be 6 or 5.9mm so I could see the headphone jack being removed for practicality (the 12.9” having no home button mostly to match the 10.5” new design.)
Also I kind of hope white bezels survive, Black is okay for OLED iPhones, but on iPads White looks better IMO.
Apple please just clear all this crap up on Sept. 12th. In the immortal words of Shia LeBeouf... JUST DO IT! ;)
Oh and get us a new 5-10ms latency Apple Pencil 2 in Silver, Space Gray, or Gold. ;)

Kallum.

I swear, Apple is trying to make their products as annoying to use as possible. Removing the bezels (which act as the iPad's handles), adding a camera bump (makes iPad wobbly on flat surfaces), and removing the headphone jack (makes listening with good headphones exponentially more difficult than it needs to be). WHO on Earth is making these design decisions?!?! WHY is Apple making their products so annoying to use?!?!

iPads have had a camera bump for years, this is nothing new.

No. When your argument starts with "Just buy....", no. Just no. There is absolutely no justifyable reason why they can't fit a 3.5mm jack in there. Not just for headphones, but for accessories like Square, any music interface, external mics etc. The iPad has more than enough space to fit it in.

Stop calling it an edge-to-edge display. It couldn't be less of an edge-to-edge display. It's not even that on the iPhone. Also, chamfered edges? the worst design detail Apple ever included in their mobile devices.

Presumably fits in the bezel. Which would underline the fact that on the iPhone X it's a compromise of a design element, not the charming ideal some seem to believe it to be (but fair enough, if you like it). We’ll see!
Sure, if you preferred the iPhone X to have a 3-mm thick top bezel because if an iPad looks good with a 3-mm bezel, an iPhone does as well. Or do you honestly believe that they managed to shrink the size of all the components in current iPhone X bezel by a factor of five within a year?

Shrugs, I'll fret about this if and when Apple release a mini version. Until such time, my 2018 iPad will suffice.

I think it’s *clearly* obvious that there isn’t Much relevance to the iPad mini to Apple anymore, it’s one of those products that are along side the iPod that ultimately have been replaced by the larger iPhones.

Sounds more like a "nod to the worst of Apple's iPhone handset design".

like iPhone 8 & X you mean? yech, these things are ugly - just need glass backs for the dumbest ever wireless charging and the you have the whole set

and that's one even uglier sun of a camera bump

I just can't see Apple doing an iPad with the smart keyboard only working in portrait mode that would be very silly, no one wants to type with their iPad in portrait mode, imagine show stupid that would be with the 12.9"

Apple need to do something about the Surface Pro line up, they have nothing that is really competition, while the iPad Pro is a great device it simply can't do full desktop apps/work. I love the Mac and will still own one (i may buy a new iMac) but the Surface Pro is also calling me which could end up replacing my iPad Pro, and this is coming from an Apple fan

I was thinking how it would work in landscape mode. The Smart Keyboard would have to undergo a redesign. It could definitely work in that position, but it would need a lot of work. It seems like it would be more trouble than it’s worth.

I disagree. Every child i've ever seen using an iPad with headphones is using wired. Cheap wired noise limited headphones are a godsend for kids

Ok, unless what it displayed on a device blends directly into, eg, the table the device is sitting on, it cannot be called edge-to-edge?

In mathematics, the edge is a line. In real-life usage, 'edge' can also be used to describe the border region ("The border or part adjacent to the line of division."), ie, something of non-zero thickness. Thus anything that can be perceived as being part of the border can be called the edge. If you look at the iPhone 6/7/8, the top and bottom bezel clearly isn't part of the border. If something has bezels with different thickness, the thinnest bezel parts can be perceived as representing the border region, whereas the thicker bezel parts aren't seen as the border but as something that is part of the front-facing surface.

Thus, if you reduce the bezel to what was seen as a border region (ie, the thinnest bezel parts) on all sides, it can be perceived as edge-to-edge. More generally, if you reduce the bezel to something massively thinner than before (eg, reduce its thickness by a factor of five) or to something less than maybe 5% on either side, that bezel might also start to be seen as just representing a border region and not part of the front-facing surface.

Additionally, when you start rounding the edges you quite clearly denote that the curved part as a whole is described as the edge. If the edge where just a line, it couldn't be rounded. And on the iPhone X, the distance between where the screen ends and where the rounding starts is really pretty small, I'd say a millimetre tops. And finally, terms like basically edge-to-edge or practically edge-to-edge start being used which are then abbreviated to 'edge-to-edge'. Or compared to the previous model, the screen goes edge-to-edge.

In short:
  1. The edge can be more than just an infinitesimal thin line.
  2. Everything is seen in context, relative to something else. Relative to a previous model, relative to the size of the whole object.

Are they also frequently charging the iPad while using it? Otherwise the included Lightning Earpods will do the job just fine.

May be I am in the minority, I love the straight edges rather than curve out. I only wish it is thinner, like 5mm thin or even less.

Hopefully a memory bump to 6GB as well.
