Ugh... please no.

More ****ization of the word "HD".

Another question: if Apple does announce an Apple TV with 1080p capabilities what will 1080p content on iTunes be called, being that 720p content is already "HD"? HD+?

Messy.

My 480p video camera is higher quality than a badly compressed HD camera. I don't think "HD" means much anymore.

if this true that means

they will charge $79 more for the iPad 3 ( iPad HD) and keep the iPad 2 for sales also

i like iPad 3 not the iPad HD

Might as well be HD because other than the retina display, it doesn't seem like it will be that different from the iPad2.

Unless we get a quad core, or 128GB storage, or more RAM the new iPad seems like a yawn to me.

4G to eat up the battery faster, to pay ATT more, and to hit their unlimited cap faster doesn't strike me as interesting at the moment.

Hard to see how a display is going to get me to spend $800 to upgrade from my iPad 2.
How do you know you need quad core?

Are you kidding? This is going to be a MUCH bigger upgrade than iPad -> iPad 2 was. In fact, I'd even say it's shaping up to be the biggest iOS device upgrade ever.

-Retina display
-LTE
-New processor
-Siri
-New case (okay, it's just a little thicker, but it's still new :p)
-Better cameras (?)
-More RAM (?)
-Bluetooth 4.0
-More storage (?)

And to think the only differences between the iPhone 4 and 4s were the processor, cameras, and Siri.

EVERYONE READING THIS HAS SEEN A PIC OF THE IPAD HD

its on their even invitation...the text is much sharper.

turns out gizmodo actually made a nice comparison article..

So out of curiosity, IF they do so happen to release this smaller iPad eventually then what number scheme do they call it? Lol

iPad Mini
iPad Mini 2
iPad Mini HD?

Curious...

Messy.

HD+ is 900P Full HD is 1080P. it's an absolute cluster****.

Apple makes incremental updates to their products so this sounds right in some ways, though it would seem an "HD" model would be an upper end choice and cost more. Maybe those higher priced rumors are true after all, as is the A5X CPU? Basically just an iPad 2 with a better screen and slightly better processor?

I like iPad 3 better, goes along with the other products, I don't think iPad HD fits

It fits fine if the iPad 2 sticks around in the product line up, iPad HD becomes the "Pro" model in a family of iPads.

The big issue with the HD name is the resolution (2000x1500) is beyond HD, that will confuse people based on the industry standard definition of "HD"

"iPad HD" makes far more sense then "iPad 3".

Why?

Because this is a minor feature bump, not a whole new iPad. The processor inside the machine is an A5X, not an A6. It likely contains extensions for Siri, but is otherwise identical to the one in the iPhone 4S.

The GPU is probably the same (maybe they've doubled the VRAM- but I doubt they'd have swapped the unit out for anything newer), the RAM is probably the same, the Flash capacities are likely the same.

Everything is the same except the display, and potentially whatever is required to drive Siri if they decided to include that.

It's not a "whole new iPad". It's just the iPad 2 on steroids, like the iPhone 4S is an iPhone 4 on steroids. It makes much more sense to name it the "iPad HD" (or "iPad 2 HD") in this manner then it is to bump the series number, because then people are going to expect a whole new device (similar to what we saw with the iPhone 5 looking nothing like the iPhone 4 chassis wise).

Right, because Apple's already released it and you know exactly what the specs are. / sarcasm

So what will they call the next iteration of the iPad? iPadHD2?
Unless this one is going to be iPad2HD and iPad 2s. The 2s will be faster with a standard screen and the HD will be faster with the retina display.
Then iPad 3 will next year.

Can I be the first to say "does it matter what they call it?" "If they don't call it an iPad3 does it mean that it is just another iPad2". It is an update no matter what they call it. People don't go buy a Samsung galaxy S and never upgrade to S2 because it has S in the name.

I have noticed that people only think it is worth the upgrade if the design changes. Would you be like that for an iMac or macbook pro as well? cause if you were you would be waiting 4-5 years for an update.

HD is actually a step backwards given the sure as hell resolution bump. No one in the market has anything like it. When I think HD I think of 1920x1080. But what the hell do I know. People still bought the iphone 4S with the 3.5" screen size from 2007.
Apple can afford to screw up the name but not the $499 entry price. My fear is that Apple is going to market this on the higher end of the tablet spectrum. Which from a technical standpoint would be correct but you don't want to price yourself out of the mainstream. Apple has a hit if they stay at this price point for one more year. But they really have to start looking at reducing the cost because the market will be over saturated with these tablets.

iPaHD ?

Or just name it the 'Pro-view IPAD Galaxy XOOM HD' just to stick it to all their litigious competition.

Or, a name to better signify its place among other tablet manufacturers could just simply be iWin.

I very much agree. Samsung could just say yeh our 1080p screen is HD vs iPadHD. We are cheaper so buy us. They should give it a unique paraphrase after iPad so it becomes more special and distances itself from competitors.

How would that work?

Why not just drop the numbering scheme on all of the iOS devices? How dumb would macbook pro 4 sound? Just make it the iPad and iPhone.

I mean since Apple sales 3 different versions of the iPhone right now.
