I imagine at some point the names will just be iPhone and iPad, and we'll get one or two updates a year in-between new generations of the devices.

Like the other Apple products they'll be distinguished by their release dates, like the late 2009 iMacs, 2010 MBP's, etc.

The basic design of the iPad seems to be pretty limited in what can be done with the form factor, but something resembling the more squared shape of the iPhone 4/4S might be interesting.

I wonder what Apple is going to do for the next generation iPhone, whether or not they will update the overall appearance as drastically as they did between the 3 and 4 models. The 4 has really grown on me but it would make sense that they would change the look more dramatically to distinguish new iPhones from older ones.

I have noticed that people only think it is worth the upgrade if the design changes. Would you be like that for an iMac or macbook pro as well? cause if you were you would be waiting 4-5 years for an update.

Going on 6 here mate ;)

I like the pre-unibodies, hate the GlossBook Pros, so holding out for whatever they stick an Ivy Bridge chip in.

HD is actually a step backwards given the sure as hell resolution bump. No one in the market has anything like it. When I think HD I think of 1920x1080. But what the hell do I know. People still bought the iphone 4S with the 3.5" screen size from 2007.
Apple can afford to screw up the name but not the $499 entry price. My fear is that Apple is going to market this on the higher end of the tablet spectrum. Which from a technical standpoint would be correct but you don't want to price yourself out of the mainstream. Apple has a hit if they stay at this price point for one more year. But they really have to start looking at reducing the cost because the market will be over saturated with these tablets.

HD is 1280x720, Full HD is 1920x1080, and the iPad 3/HD will be a QXGA resolution at 1536x2048. But the iPad QXGA doesn't roll off the tongue very well :(

I like iPad 3 better, goes along with the other products, I don't think iPad HD fits

in ten years time iPad will still be a killer device and if they continued to do a new number each year then it would end up like Final Fantasy lol. Yay the new ipad 45!

In related news, a reliable source (me) told my news outlet (me) that the new iPad will be named the iPad S II Epic 4G Touch. :apple:

actually same boat here lol. I am holding out for either ivy bridge imac or mbp (still deciding if I need the portability or not) to replace my 2008 MacPro. I am hoping for matte option but it doesn't matter because I use a cintiq for my design stuff anyway.

if the product remains the same for 10 years, then yes.

Look what happened to iPod you have iPod touch

when the time comes for iPad 10 - we can rename it, not right now.

Why not just drop the numbering scheme on all of the iOS devices? How dumb would macbook pro 4 sound? Just make it the iPad and iPhone.

They used to do this - look no further than my PowerBook G4. This being said, "HD" is a horrible idea. The screen resolution is expected to be greater than 1920x1080, so they're under-selling themselves. Just keep it simple and use numbers!

Eliminating the number scheme would simplify the line. Would be a great move for the new CEO.

iPaHD ?

Or just name it the 'Pro-view IPAD Galaxy XOOM HD' just to stick it to all their litigious competition.

Or, a name to better signify its place among other tablet manufacturers could just simply be iWin.

or iHaveafollowingwithaninferioritycomplex

iPad Touch

The new iPad will be called iPad Touch and will have haptic feedback. Apple will have to do something to really distinguish themselves from all the other tablets.

I can see Tim Cook dropping the "2" in iPad 2, and just call it the iPad. This can set Apple up to release a yearly consumer iPad and introduce a new yearly pro iPad (iPad HD)

pity. iPad is the most unique name Apple has imo. Would be a shame to expand it.
