Perhaps it will be called iPad HD to differentiate it from a possible second line of non-Retina display iPad 3s?
ala iMac, iMac DV, iMac DV+ of '99.
ala iMac, iMac DV, iMac DV+ of '99.
Maybe this year will be the year everything goes HD:
iPad HD
iPod HD
iPhone HD
MacBook HD
HD Movies (1080p) & HD Music (ALAC or 24 bit) on iTunes
No more numbers on iOS devices.
"iPad HD" makes far more sense then "iPad 3".
Why?
Because this is a minor feature bump, not a whole new iPad. The processor inside the machine is an A5X, not an A6. It likely contains extensions for Siri, but is otherwise identical to the one in the iPhone 4S.
The GPU is probably the same (maybe they've doubled the VRAM- but I doubt they'd have swapped the unit out for anything newer), the RAM is probably the same, the Flash capacities are likely the same.
Everything is the same except the display, and potentially whatever is required to drive Siri if they decided to include that.
It's not a "whole new iPad". It's just the iPad 2 on steroids, like the iPhone 4S is an iPhone 4 on steroids. It makes much more sense to name it the "iPad HD" (or "iPad 2 HD") in this manner then it is to bump the series number, because then people are going to expect a whole new device (similar to what we saw with the iPhone 5 looking nothing like the iPhone 4 chassis wise).

Thats stupid, they didn't call the iPhone 4 "iPhone HD" because of the retina display.

But the iPhone already had retina display...so what would be the meaning of HD? Unless you're suggesting they're going to switch to SAMOLED screens or something along those lines?
Apple naming convention has a long history of not making much sense..
How about iPad ][e ?

I'm suggesting this years refresh may be called the iPhone HD instead of the iPhone 5 or 4GS or whatever. Pull the rug from under Samsung - no more OLED, LED, AMOLED, etc. Everyone understands the term HD but I bet most people don't have a clue what Retina Screen means. It's too techie for most people.
No more numbers - everything is just called HD from now on. Very simple - takes the debate away from who has the best screen to who has the best phone (UI, simplicity, speed, features, software).
Edit: The iPod Touch doesn't have a number it's just the iPod Touch so it's not without precedent.
Would this mean only an incremental update?
i'm a bit worried the ipad2 will be a revamped iPad2s with the 5X proc for the 16gb model (same price point as now) and if you want the retina display and faster proc you have to get one of the horribly marked up versions 32 64 128? models
