The battery percentage indicator, much like the Logging and Diagnostic tools, are for internal use only - much like the debugging menu in Safari or the minimize-in-place functionality of the dock.
Wouldn't it make sense for the testers in the pictures to be using it then? I mean that's where this entire argument started, that these pictures aren't real because of the % indicator.

MMS and tethering were likely removed due to pressure from AT&T.

It's possible Apple may open up the battery % for everyone, but I wouldn't count on it.

I'm not going to guarantee that 3.0 will have a battery percentage indicator even announced features have been removed or delayed on various devices.

However, I will guarantee that the beta which developers are using to test their applications does not contain all the 3.0 features.

What I am also saying is that there is a good chance of a battery percentage indicator appearing in 3.0. Why would the resource files contain colored numbers (green for >20%, red for <=20%) if it's simply for engineers? It doesn't prove anything; but the fact that people have been checking the internals of the system for every generation and have just found this is more of an indication it will exist than not.

If I remember correctly Scott said battery would be one of the new API's for 3.0. I know apps show the perecentage now but there breaking the SDK rules.

So maybe Apple will show it in 3.0, why not?

Battery indicators

Meanwhile, it appears that iPhone 3.0 will also introduce an option of showing you how much battery life you have left on your iPhone or iPod touch in a numerical percentage.

Resource files contained within the new version of the device's Springboard application include 22 new PNG files to facilitate this option. Half are numerical characters (and a "%" sign) in black typeface for representing healthy battery level percentages while the other half are in red typeface for when battery life falls bellow a certain threshold.

Could be bunk, who knows.

But here is what I know:

Once the new OS comes out, we will know whether you can see your battery as a number.

Until then, NO ONE KNOWS EITHER WAY FOR SURE.

PERIOD.

Good grief!!!

This thread reminds me of being 4 years old playing in the sandbox and kicking sand in the other babies' faces.

I can't believe you all are talking about battery percentage in beta's blah blah blah...

How about actually discussing that fact that this pretty much confirms video recording as well as a compass feature. Also, revealing that auto focus is apart of the new hardware! Which has barely been tossed around as a possibility.

If you read the translation it says that when using auto focus, the blue box appears and by touching the screen, the box will move and re-focus on that part of the frame. Which sounds very cool.

Also, it is hard to make sense of the translation but it does say "In addition, because this is a project machine, body and appearance can not be disclosed, and some for sale and is there a difference between formal, so photos will not have any form of comparison of old and new iPhone!"

I take it as meaning that the guts inside this phone are that of iPhone 3.0, however the body style might not reflect the finished product. Of course I might be wrong.

That debate arose because some were claiming that due to the battery percentage indicator, they believe it is a jailbroken phone and for that reason - not authentic.

And they have a point. If the phone is jailbroken, it's probably fake.

Also, it's easy to design an image at 320x480 and show it in the photos app thereby making it look like you're using a new application that's really nothing more than an image. I did that to some friends once...

you can call me a child all you want.. but you are still wrong.. and the phone is not jailbroken.. please just show me one screenshot where there is a clearly jailbroken iphone with percentage number and % symbol and a battery? in 3.0?

because if you can i will take back all my statements and admit i was wrong..

this is not a jailbroken iphone because you cannot even enable video recording in 3.0 by hacking ..so how is this person doing it..

Jailbreaking is not the point.

If I am not mistaken, you have to SSH into the iPhone to get it to display these numbers as of yet.

That's called hacking.

I'm also curious as to the purpose of having both at all. If you have the numbers, the icon is rendered useless, as you can tell far more from the numbers than you can an icon.

that picture is obviously fake

That's why he said it was fake.

This statement right here just won "Fratboy" the discussion.

If you modify your plist to show the camera and video setting in 3.0 beta, the video won't work when you open it.

In the posted pictures (Chinese), you can clearly see the camera function working, therefore, the Chinese pictures aren't using a jailbroken iPhone to enable the camera/video and battery percentage.

Or its a really creative scam. :)
Hope we see more evidence over the next few days!!!

I've personally tried it on my iPhone when I modified the plist to enable the video and it didn't work. There's topics on the forum, with others who have tried it as well.

Here's AppleInsider trying it also. The video didn't work for them neither.

1. Photoshop some screenshots.
2. Sync screenshots to iPhone.
3. Open Photos application and select to display the screenshot of choice.
4. Take picture of iPhone with another camera.

That was so difficult.

Yeah, because Photoshop is just so hard! And iTunes won't let me sync this 'shop to my iPhone or look at it on my iPhone or take a picture of my iPhone displaying the screenshot.

there is no point in arguing with you.. you will have an excuse for everything... the photos of the guy shooting a video are NOT screen shots that are photoshoped...

How about this? If you have Beta 5, modify your plist to enable video, and you let us ALL know if you get the video functioned working?

We'll all be waiting.

You're claiming its Photoshop. The exact picture I posted was off the AppleInsiders website and its copyrighted by MacRumors.

Look, when you modify the plist in 3.0 and enable the video recording capability, the "aperture" does not open. We know this because countless people have tried it, and MacRumors and AppleInsider have published their findings.

You're saying that because these new pictures show the same video recording interface only this time with the "aperture" open, that that proves the photos' authenticity.

Then, I suggested how one might fake those photos.

1. Photoshop some screenshots.
2. Put them on your iPhone.
3. Display them on your iPhone in a manor that is convincingly real.
4. Take picture with another camera.

Not difficult at all. You guys are just so angry at me that you'll argue with anything I say, put words into my mouth and refute everything I post. Calm down, eat a Snicker's, open a beer and sit back and relax.
