I want curves! I hate the sharp edge feel of my 5S. The 5C feels wonderful in the hand in comparison, and I would have bought it for that reason had they made a 64 Gb and Fingerprint Recognition version (not that the latter has ever worked properly on my 5S anyway).

Yep. Curves are nice. The iPhone started out that way, and it was pleasant to hold.

Of course, most people will eventually embrace and praise whatever Apple comes out with:

Remember back when the new chunky iPhone 4 shape was first leaked? Forums were full of posts exclaiming that it was a) not an Apple-like design because it had no curves, b) too industrial looking, and c) too Zune-like.

Whilst I'm not a fan of the mock-up, I'll wait and see what the final product will look like before making a judgement. As noted by others it'll be fun to look back at these after the real thing is out and compare :)

About the curved display, what would be the added functionality? Sure it might look cool but it doesn't seem to be large enough to act as a side touch area. Would be really allow for the elimination of the display bezel as shown?

a very svelte rendering. Unlike any phone I've ever seen before.
It's interesting that there are so many subtle possibilities within such rigid design constraints. It seems to be all about the curves. I think ithe 6 is going to end up taking design cues from the iPad mini. I hope the new design is as radical as the iPhone 4 was compared to the curvy 3 models. I hope they bring some curves back because I really liked the hand feel of the 3Gs.

But more than anything I hope they do some major improvements with the iOS UI/UX.

I keep hearing people say this, but if that screen technology was available to incorporate Finger print id you don't think apple would have done it already?

Touch screens do not have the sensitive capability to read finger prints, at least not yet, and probably not for quite some time to come.

It's certainly possible, the same sensor that you use on the home button could be placed under the screen. The home button could become a glowing backlit ring that exists on the screen even when locked as well. I do hate capacitive buttons but it's the only way around the current problem.

And as far as Apple having done it already, I wouldn't expect that to come in an "S" update.

It will certainly be interesting to look back on these mockups once the real iPhone 6 comes out... Remember the "iPhone 5", anybody? :D

Yeah. Even though this rendering is hideous, the actual iPhone never really lives up to the hype. The 5 was much more boring than any of the renderings. It looks almost the same as every other iphone.

what about cases?

You put your phone in a case and you block half your screen... :D

See thru cases need to be in vogue!

The only reason I see this design as plausible is because I think Apple could justify the even larger screen-size despite having turned it down in the past due to the thumb's reach.

I have a feeling some of these ever-larger smartphones are already an orthopedic nightmare in the making. The 5C size is my max-out point, or possibly a bit past it, I have not really decided even after all this time, but my thumb sometimes tells me the 4S was a happier choice. So I dunno. I guess I'm at the boundary where maybe an iPad mini and a dumb phone might be the next move once my 5C dies.

Not when they have that nice separate Home button available, which people are already used to touching to start up.

There are fingerprint readers in touch screens.

Besides Validity (whom Synaptics bought) I'm pretty sure that Apple also has a patent on a way to do this.

IF…. it really looks like that, I believe users will be more likely to accidentally drop it than the 5 and 5s as this looks too light weight and too smooth for carrying bare. The lightness amount of oil on the hand will create a slip, slide and drop situation. Well, unless it is in a case, which will take away from its beauty. It will be as if you have an expensive fabric sofa and decided to use a cover over it.

I have posted the video of the Validity demo unit multiple times on this forum (Incidentally validity modified a samsung smartphone )..You are also correct that apple has patents on such a thing in addition to patents that authentech had when apple bought them.

Prototype's however do not mean that the tech can be easily/smoothly, and affordably applied to mass produced phones (and apple has huge volumes)..If Validity/Synaptics had a mass producible solution I'm sure Samsung would have been tempted given that it would have given them something to claim superiority over the 5s. Lets see if they do this on the Note 4 later on in the year..Given that apple required a year of wait (or requires) to get Touch ID for their entire mobile family one would have to be cautious to see how much a newer solution can be brought up to do the same and in what timeframe and at what cost..
