That is a yuge camera wart. Even bigger and uglier than the iPhone 6/6s. Sad. Jobs would have fired somebody over this! We need someone to make Apple great again!

No, you are alone (along with the fellow naysayers who weren't going to buy an iPhone anyway). Apple will still sell record numbers of iPhones, and faced with this inconvenient truth all the people who "claimed" they won't buy because it's lacking a headphone jack will have to find some other excuse to explain the sales figures. Usually it will be something like "Apple owners are stupid and will buy anything Apple even if it's flawed" or "Good thing Apple has a loyal base of fanboys to buy their garbage."

It's a way for them to save face without facing the cold, hard reality that their predictions were wrong.

Look at the picture! That IS a silly design failure.

I like the bulge. And I like the idea of a further beefed up camera. :)

Not sure what the killer features will be though.. a slightly better camera, less headphone jack.. the usual speed bump.. What on earth can they add that they haven't already?

I've never had this issue before. Do you press the volume up button with your index finger? I always use my thumb or my middle finger depending on which hand I'm using and I really can't see this possibly happening. The only way I could see myself accidentally turning the screen off is if I'm holding the phone one-handed with my right hand in landscape mode and I use my middle finger, but if I turn my hand around and use my thumb then it's a non-issue.
I think the real problem isn't accidentally turning off the screen, but accidentally NOT turning off the screen. When pushing the lock button, pressure is put on the opposing side of the phone. On the opposing side of the phone is the volume button. When pressed simultaneously, the volume takes priority and the screen doesn't lock. I'm used to just pressing it as I'm putting it I'm my pocket, so I don't notice that the screen isn't locked. I have have discovered the phone on in my pocket more times since getting the 6s than all other iPhones combined, all the way back to the original iPhone. The new placement is kinda dumb. Lots of people have been complaining on the internet about it.

fine call me a troll but i think most can agree with me that camera hump is just hideous. if that's what it's gonna really look like then sammy here i come

my investment in headphones is larger than the cost of a new iPhone. No headphone jack, no buy.
why save a few mm of thickness to make millions of headphones inoperable?
Aren't you cutting your nose off to spite your face? A Lightning to 3.5 mm headphone adaptor will be a quite small box that costs a tiny fraction of what you have spent on iPhones and headphones. Yes, it will make things a bit bulkier but your investment in headphones very likely also includes things noticeably bulkier than the standard earbuds.

There is a difference between inconvenience and inoperability even though many equate the former with the latter. The right description is that Apple is saving "a few millimetres of thickness" at the cost of making things a bit more inconvenient for maybe 15% of all iPhone users. But I guess that doesn't sound quite as damning as your formulation.

Keeping the same form factor, they could potentially add water resistance, a front facing flash, IR blaster, VR capabilities, more RAM, and truly wireless charging (ie Watt Up). It would also be nice if the 4.7" model gets OIS.

Next year they can hopefully slim down those bezels drastically and integrate the touch sensor into the display.

I'm sure there are lots of other great things too that I would never think of too. I'd imagine they have a team of people who works on big ideas for upcoming iPhones.

Other health sensor would be cool too. I've heard before there was some people working on a method to test blood glucose levels without breaking skin, but I don't know if this is practical at all.

I remember reading a while back that Apple were aiming for something bolder and if they couldn't pull it off in time they were going to fall back on a design very similar to the iPhone 6 and 6S. Looks like thats what actually happened as I seriously doubt they wanted to release the same shape phone for the 3rd time in a row. This is more of a 6SS and I don't see the lack of headphone jack as a 'feature'. Maybe I will be giving this one a miss.

Finally, if the phone is exactly the same dimensions, what exactly IS the reason for removing a piece of physical hardware? Bigger battery? Additional speaker?

I think Im saving myself for next years OLED display and glass body design :)

And the ugly designs era continues in Apple. Deciders and Designers(yes, including jonny ive) are so arrogant, they are keep trying so so hard to prove themselves as better designers. Same concepts, same designs, just changing few ugly bumps here and there. Apple without Steve is never a complete world! God bless Apple

And kids are being kidnapped, and women are being forced into sex slavery, and people are being tortured in North Korea and Guantanamo bay, and millions of pedophiles are doing unthinkable things, and other sick people are making crush videos. There have been how many large terrorist attacks this year now involving the murder of dozens of innocent people? 5?

It's incredibly sad and unfortunate. It is. The world is a horrible place, but there are also lots of good people with good hearts doing good things. All the evil in the world doesn't mean we can't carry on in our own individual ways and try to make our own bubbles of happiness.

Spread love where you can, but don't try to take on all the problems of the world.
Where did I say we shouldn't carry on??? I just found it sad.

Has Joni lost his touch? or is Tim just spontaneously rubber-stamping everything coming his way? Sorry but if true, I don't believe a design like this would have ever passed into production before.

I wish Tim would spend less time on his 'politically correct' agenda, and more on the meticulously crafted, gorgeous, flawless and elegant designs we used to see coming out of Cupertino.

Also, are those leakers getting brazen or what.....

They got rid of the the old 30 pin connector to save a few mm of thickness and it made millions of chargers/docks/iHomes/AV cables/etc "inoperable" too.
Nope, that's not the same. The 30ping connector was an outdated design much like PATA on hard drives. Also, it's Apple proprietary, so it's OK if they revise their (!) standard...
The 3,5mm, however, is industry standard on literally every device. Apple was stupid enough to change it from GND-MIC-L-R pins to MIC-GND-L-R which required an adapter for existing 4pin 3,5mm plugs.
Furthermore, when you consider Bluetooth an alternative, please educate yourself first: Apple isn't even supporting AptX Bluetooth Audio Codec on the iPhones (although on the macbooks... logic?), for which there is a lot of supported devices which are even listed on http://www.aptx.com/products Apple BT AAC is great as well, but won't stand a chance against AptX HD, which will deliver HD Audio over BT. Unfortunately, Apple isn't always "premium-class". In fact, the iOS Bluetooth stack is far from it.

Why do so many people care what a phone looks like vs. what it does. How shallow can you be - so if it did everything you ever wanted but wasn't beautiful because the camera sticks out you would think it was bad. What a shame. Do you folks wear it around your neck so people can see how pretty it is or other than using it sits in a case in a pocket or purse, etc.
Does it do what you want it to do. How about looking pretty but not functioning - I think you folks would prefer that.
How about, for ex, reducing top/bottom and side bezel would make a phone easier to handle (and look better). That's a direct benefit of a new design, which will be absent in 2016 iPhone...

Dam right he would have. 3,2,1..... "stop it he is gone!!!! Drop it." Yada, yada, yada. Make sure AAPL is not in your portfolio by August 31st. :apple:

There is no one to fill SJ's shoes. Smart investors were out of AAPL by Q2 2015.

I like how everyone cries about the camera bump when almost every other phone on the market has had a bump 6x bigger. This is probably a 1mm flare in real life and it probably protects the lens a bit.
I'm sure 1000 people have said this, but what is anyone REALLY expecting? Are we expecting them to make it fold out into a 65" TV with 12" subwoofers? It's a pretty mature platform, so "lack of innovation" is part of the deal in form. It will always be a rectangle that you hold and touch.

No, what people are expecting, or rather wanting, is for Apple to remove the bump by losing this obsession with "thin" and making the phone 1mm thicker, with better battery. It's been said by a huge amount of people since the iPhone 6 but I've has some design anorexia obsession.

Must it always be a metal slab just as dull as the one before it??? How about glass, wood, carbon fiber, SOMETHING OTHER THAN THIS!!

What does Ive do all day now? This?
iu
What does he do all day?
Mostly assembles furniture at the new spaceship headquarters or doodles car designs on his 12.7" iPad pro.

It's a bit thicker because it has a bigger battery for the faster processor and it also makes the big camera flat BOOOOM!!!! Trillions of iPhones sold. But in reality it seems like they will just continue with the old outdated trend of making things thinner and over-milking a design that has become incredibly booooring.
