If Tim Cook was a Smart Man, AND that's a BIG IF, it would get the A11 + 3 GB of DRAM.

Otherwise, it won't have much of a shelf life.

So, I expect the A11 + 3 GB of DRAM.

To-date, ONLY the 7+, 8+, AND X are known to have 3 GB of DRAM ... the RED 8 "may" ... still needs to be confirmed.
Shouldn't need that. Unless you're playing fancier video games, these phones do the same thing they did 6 years ago, but if anything they do it more slowly now. The software sucks.

I'd rather see new CPUs downclocked, software kept tight, and battery life massively improved. We would've seen like 1/8 the battery usage by CPU in the past 6 years, judging by the CPU speed improvements. Consider how much more useful that would've been than what we got.

Hmm I see SE fans being both happy and unhappy at this news....

Should be grateful it appears rumours are suggesting the new SE won’t be the 6.1” phablet!!

I also predict it will have 3D Touch as with the bezelles designs it will play a bigger part of iOS. It’s not like they can’t do it!

If Apple believes in a wireless future, they have to include a pair of wireless headphones at some point.

I 10000% agree. Yet every time I say it people try to crucify me.
With Apple's current model, it's very clear that they're just trying to double dip rather than actually propel wireless technology forward. They remove a feature and then make you pay to replace said feature. It's so ridiculous.

Dongles are everywhere at the mo but

There are dual adaptors that let you do this - I know its not as convenient but you'd believe that from here Apple had made it so only BT headphones work and that simply not true...

It’s best to only buy Apple or VERY reputable male singles though! Considering how many cheap dangerous ones that set fire to your phone then house there are!

I won’t buy an SE, I’ve played with them in the shops and their size is just too small for me these days, 8 or X size is where I’m happy. Or my 6S.

But if they launch a new SE with wireless charging, 3D Touch, Touch ID2, decent quality 4” screen with auto brightness, and the A10 with 2GB ram, perhaps the same camera as the 7 or 8 with OIS, that will be a very nice phone! Remember the screen resolution will be lower then the iPhone 7 so the A10 will move it along at a very nice pace.

With a lower resolution display to drive, this thing should put up some good performance numbers even on year-old hardware. I don't think a last-gen chip is in any way a dealbreaker.

I think you mean a smaller screen, and therefore fewer pixels. The SE still has the same Retina display as other devices, so the resolution is still high.

The iPhone X deal breaker for me was the removal of Touch ID. Give me the same internals as the iPhone 8 in a regular, smaller size and I'm in.
TouchID is going away. Switch to Android if you don't want TouchID because it will be gone soon.

Oh wait, they're just copying Apple with facial recognition, so you're kind of out of luck.

Then i may be swapping my iPhone 8.... i want small again......

Ya I may actually sell my X to get back on an SE2. Love the pocket, one handed factor and getting rid of the awkward X gestures but would hate to downgrade the other benefits of the X. Tough decision.

Wouldn't it be great if Apple released an ever lighter iPhone SE2? Apple used to be proud of creating the thinnest, smallest, lightest... now their top range phones are heavier, thicker and bigger than the competition.

I'd be happy with the same model with new internals though. My SE is running fine and I don't need a new phone, but it'd be good to know there's a recent model there to replace it later on.

Resolution just means the X * Y count of pixels. I think you're conflating the term for pixel density or DPI (dots-per-inch), though I understand it gets conflated frequently. OP was using the term "resolution" correctly, and this indeed is a "lower" resolution. Regardless, the same point applies, less pixels to drive leads to better performance given the same processing power.

I tried the SE for a week after having used a 6S for 2 years, and the UI performance was amazing and significantly smoother than the 6S.

My only proof is logic. They aren't going to put the A11 in it with almost 6 months to go before flagship phones have the A12. iPhone X has the A11 right and SE will have it next month? No.

Apple will start differentiating their phones based partly on their phenomenal silicon.

I agree, but I'd suggest they already started, at least with iPads. The new iPad got the A10 of the iPhone 7, not the A11 of the iPhone X or the A10X of the iPad Pro. They are launching "budget" devices with one generation old silicon now.

The SE's original purpose was basically to the provide top end silicon (of the iPhone 6s) to people not interested in the new iPhone form factor. Apple has already done that that this time around with the iPhone 8 as an alternative to the iPhone X.

The new SE, if launched, will fit into a different position than the original SE. It will essentially be the alternative form factor for the one generation old iPhone 7, which explains why they skipped a year of updates too: the original SE met its original purpose in its first year of release (alternative on new silicon), and the new purpose in its second year (alternative on one generation old silicon).

The A11 is clearly an expensive chip for Apple, and the A10 is still as good as the top end chips on the Android side. The new iPad got an A10, the SE will too.

That may happen in the future, but not right now. Apple wants to people to continue buying AirPods.
And only a matter of time before iPads and Macs lose their headphone jacks as well.

I won't buy it if there's no headphone jack. The smaller screen is nice, but it's not worth that downgrade.

Apple wasn't right. Bluetooth headphones are old tech; they had been out for more than a decade. If they were a replacement, it would have happened long ago. But nobody used them until Apple forced it.

"old tech" is the argument AGAINST removing TRS ports?

So that's why the new iPad they released a couple of days ago supports Face ID? Oh wait, not it doesn't.
Just because Apple decided to go with an inferior solution with the iPhone X model doesn't mean it will do the same on all their models.

It would be more accurate to say that the processor (A10) in the new iPad simply doesn't support FaceID. It's not indicative of the direction Apple is going, it's a hardware restriction (although not having a gen II fingerprint reader is not). The iPad Pro, whenever it's updated, will be the first iPad with a processor that supports FaceID. If that one doesn't have FaceID, it may tell you something about Apple's thoughts on the matter. Then again, it could just mean that Apple views iPads and iPhones differently.

I'm somewhat surprised that people still care this much about the 3.5mm headphone jack. Apple includes EarPods with a Lightning connector and the 3.5mm dongle in the iPhone box. Even my wife who is a naysayer when it comes to technological change (if she had her way, we'd still be using Windows XP at home) has gotten along just fine with the iPhone 7.

There are only two use cases I've come across where the 3.5mm jack came to mind. First, since you need to set your device to airplane mode on flights, you can't use Bluetooth. If you're fine with EarPods, this is a non-issue, but if you use noise cancelling headphones (e.g., Bose QC35s) you'll need the dongle to connect them to the device. Is this a marginal inconvenience? Sure, but I'm only forced to wire in when on a flight and the dongle fits easily inside the QC35 case.

The second instance is that I have legacy technology, in particularly a PayPal card reader, that connects via the 3.5mm headphone jack. The newer readers for chip cards and NFC all connect via Bluetooth, so this really won't be an issue once I upgrade to a newer (and more secure) credit card processing unit.
I am one of those people who feel strongly about Apple keeping at least one phone with a headphone jack.
The low cost model is fine with me. Because it is the lowest cost model why take out the jack?
If Apple is trying to make it more affordable to more people why increase the cost by getting rid of the jack? Having to buy more expensive headphones like Apple's wireless ones. Other wireless headphones from what I read don't sound as good as wired.
Apple's headphones don't stay in my ears and they hurt my ears.
The dongle is an unnecessary inconvenience. They get lost and I would need multiples and having to carry it all the time is just dumb. My 15 year old truck uses the headphone jack to play my music off my phone to its cassette deck. I work in a school and connect my phone to multiple speaker systems throughout the school for various reasons. In the library, in the cafeteria, in the meeting rooms, etc. are a few places audio is played. The jack is a must to have when working in such environments. Old equipment has the 3.5mm jack. Too many people are too narrowly focused to see the big picture when it comes to use cases and convenience when it comes to keeping the ubiquitous little jack.
Are Apple's engineers less capable then Samsungs? That must be the case for the excuse of waterproofing to be used. Samsung didn't need to get rid of the jack to waterproof.
Looks like Apple needs to find some better engineers or stop using that lame excuse.
Apple thinking… how can we increase our profits?
Let's get rid of the headphone jack and sell some awesome $150 wireless headphones.
Sure we could sell the headphones without getting rid of the jack but it provides a good reason for people to buy our new headphones.
I know, we'll call it courageous of us to reduce convenience for many so we can increase our profits.
The Apple defenders will say it is old tech and it's time for a change.
There are lots of things that stand the test of time for good reason.
The headphone jack is one of those things.

So that's why the new iPad they released a couple of days ago supports Face ID? Oh wait, not it doesn't.
Just because Apple decided to go with an inferior solution with the iPhone X model doesn't mean it will do the same on all their models.
The iPad they released was their budget iPad, just like this budget iPhone.

This tech will be pushed down to budget devices in the future as well. FaceID is not just about authenticating your device and is far from inferior. In fact, it's better in many ways and the tech is far more versatile.

It's the future, like it or not.
