Why?? Can't Apple just keep the Mini in the upcoming generations and just dumb it down to meet their bottom line? With the Mini, you have a bigger screen, smaller chassis, and lighter weight vs. the 2nd gen. SE.

Right now, if you make the memory equal, it is only a $200 more with Mini. Most people who are going for a mid-range phone are more likely going to make monthly payments anyway.

Tightening the margin to $100 difference = $4.16 more per month, Courage Apple, courage...
Mini iPhone crowd is just not big enough for apple to consider enough to cover in the long term it seems. Don’t argue with me.

I bought my mom iPhone SE shortly after release and she’s really happy of it. She’s elderly person so I had wondered if she wouldn’t like to move to iPhone XR so I gave her my XS just to test gestures and she said it was a bit complicated to handle all gestures and the display itself was to big for her and proffered classic home button. She switched from iPhone 6S 16GB rose gold and was really happy but she’s misses RoseGold color a lot even today.

Honestly I think even though design of it is outdated, the price point is really good because for quite low price someone can enter apple ecosystem but I wish they introduced iPhone SE+ as a successor of iPhone SE 2gen and iPhone 8+ with dual camera setup. I had one back in the day and I loved it for other form factor.

In my country SE in menu carriers starts from 30$ in 2 years contract so I understand why so many of them choose iPhone now. Can’t wait for new generation

I can't wait to see the iPhone 6 design die... how long will it take!?

If you aren't using it, why do you care? How does it effect you in anyway?

Anyway, until Apple can get its act together regarding PWM on their OLED iPhone screens, I am stuck with LCD....which sucks, but is still better than having to switch to Android I guess....

I purchased my parents the iPhone 11. They just couldn't handle the swiping at their age (it was really sad to watch them try) and in the end they just stopped using their cell phones all together. Sold it, and got them the SE, and now they are back to texting/calling from a cell again. Glad to see there will be an upgrade option for them.

There are lots of different needs out there. More options are always better than fewer. There is no need to judge others for their needs/preferences.

No offense, but those who are okay with the current 2020 SE form factor must be a really light user, ie only using the phone for basic SMS or calls without any apps installed.

I have the 7+, and although its standby time is amazing, screen on time is horrible. Using the phone as a smartphone will barely make it through the day. The SE with its tinier battery is probably worse. Add 5G, and I cannot fathom the screen on time of it.

Imo it's time for Apple to stop bei g stingy on battery. Make the XR shell as the next SE please. That will let the SE to be a good smartphone, not a basic phone.

Now I understand fans of smaller phones. But even the 2020 SE is already bigger than the 2016 SE.

My wish is for Apple to use the X/Xs shell and size as the new SE, and the XR/11 shell as the SE Max. They are already old design since the 12 and 13 use new flat edge design. Of course, they all will use LCD and have single camera for cost saving, but at least they will have ample battery to be considered as a smartphone, especially in 2022.

Good news for me - I'm after something small to replace my aging iPhone 6s. I would definitely have gone for the latest iPhone mini, but the camera bump grew into such a stupidly huge thing that I just couldn't go for it.
Get the current SE. You won't notice any difference between it and the 2022 model.

Still on the 2016 SE, but thinking of replacing the aging device.

I think the 13 Mini would be a better choice, as the SE2 is bigger than the SE1. The 13 Mini is closer in size.

I think I would miss the Touch ID and home button though.

Can't speak for the 2016 SE, but I recently moved from an iPhone 7 to a Mini and my advice would be to consider whether you preferred the smaller size because of pocket real estate or screen reachability. For some reason people only ever consider the overall size of a phone, but to me screen size actually matters more for comfort.
  • The Mini is the smaller device and, yes, closer in size to your current SE. It's still quite a lot bigger and the screen is larger (and longer!) than both old and new SE. That means reaching either the top or bottom edge is harder and necessary more often.
  • The new SE has the larger footprint but the smaller screen, combined with the bezels, makes it easier to reach all edges of the screen. Plus, you access the control centre swiping up, which is a lot easier than on the Mini.
I use both on a daily basis, one private and one for work, and counterintuitively the SE is often easier to use despite the slightly larger size. It really depends what is more important to you.

Personally I'm sticking with the Mini because I wanted a slightly bigger screen, better battery life and cameras.

In was a strong proponent of the home button and TouchID but, honestly, it's fine. FaceID is super fast and often more convenient. Masks are obviously a bummer, but if you tend to use your devices for multiple years I think it'll become less of an issue. Gesture navigation takes a few days but once muscle memory kicks in it's okay. It has some advantages, but it's a toss up for me.

At least 1 carrier has offered the 64GB version for FREE. Others have offered for $199.

Verizon's free (excluding tax) iPhone SE offer requires you to commit to an unlimited plan for 30 months. T-Mobile's $199 (excluding tax) iPhone SE offer requires a 24 month commitment.

Depending on one's usage needs, current plan, etc. these may or may not be good deals overall but the phones are not exactly "free" or "50% off" when certain plans or longer term commitments are required. It used to be that carrier phone prices varied based on no, 1 or 2 year contracts and although they have technically moved away from contracts, these current offers serve the same purpose. The T-Mobile deal, for example, essentially offers an iPhone SE for $399 with no contract or $199 with a 2 year "contract".

Night mode, please. I don’t use my phone much, but there are still some occasions that I need shoot in dark environments.

Subjective in a sense to say ‘the best phone ever made.’

If we’re being technical, the ‘8’ was probably the best phone ever made out of that particular generation, it had the least amount of hardware issues with notable upgrades, and Apple pretty much perfected it. The 6S wasn’t without its issues, but considerably improved with performance over the standard 6.

Because I’m a tech enthusiast. I like to see the market progress and more modern technology in the hands of everyone.

Seeing Apple recycle the same parts bin since 2014 while other budget phones actually bring new ideas to the table, you have to see why an enthusiast would be frustrated.

I find it funny that the people who complain about the "looks" of the SE are not the people who are buying them.

I'm quite happy with my 2020 SE.
From my first computer, I would pay attention to the display, whether to work or play. I didn't pay much attention to how the computer looked. I feel the same way about cameras or most pieces of technology. The only time I would notice the surroundings is when I would drive a car.

Standard Apple tactics in making their 'cut price' model crippled from day 1 with an 1850 mah battery and therefore making the upsell to the much better in every way iPhone 11 easy.

I like the 2020 SE and also wanted to buy it for my mother to replace her much older iphone - she has an base iPad and the touch button is so familiar and easier for her to use. So same case as you, but here in my country the retail Price of the SE is approx 576 USD, which is about the same price or very close to what a new iPhone 11 is being sold for at several store. Which makes the SE a hard sell, and there hasnt really been any carries deals making it seems even more expensive compared to the new models - which of course could be due to the global situation.

Also while I Can definately see a market for the SE. I personally dont see upgraded internals (Except battery life) making it a better product for that specific niche market - as the power of the phone is already more than enough for allround basic smartphone usage.

And for competing in the massive midrange market against larger screens and oled on most also plenty powerfull phones these days, the SE seems very outdated in design and screen tech. Yes, the iPhone SE runs iOS and that is off course a major Selling point, but I Think bringing back the XR design (or use the ip11) for a next gen SE would have must larger competitive edge in that midrange segment. A segment, which also seems to prefer a larger screen for media consumption, while still providing clear segmentation to more expensive iPhone models.

But no, I dont really want the design of the current SE to go away either as it is a perfect match for a generation that prefer the simplicity of the home button. But i just dont Think it is the right phone to lure in a new generation of iOS users. Of course, only my opinion and not saying that you are wrong or anything?

SE is a sweet deal really. I leapt on it (2020) when my 6s was showing its age and just fits the bill for fitting in with Apple everything else and waiting to make my mind up to upgrade (new 13 is interesting and may upgrade to that for the camera). Once I had figured that heic needed to be off for better quality shots, the jpeg quality is not far off my ageing compact meaning it doubles up when out and about with the DSLR.

It is a lot of loot for a top range iPhone, as long as they price this well, I hope it continues in the range.

Recycling designs are not new.
If you look closer to budget Android phones, they don’t only recycle the same design, they even literally recycle the same exact hardware. The only thing being changed are the OS version and the camera layout to make people think it’s different. This is why we are still seeing budget Android phones on really old chipsets.

They should use the chasis for the X as the base for the SE model. Get rid of the dated look of the current SE. Apple is getting rid of the home button for pretty much everything else, might as well do it for the SE as well (or at least move it to the side in the power button like the ipad).
I for one hope they still provide a button option even if in the base/SE phone. Apple can keep trying to remove things under the guise of innovation until the iPhone is merely a bar of glass, but some basic interfaces are too useful to minimize-away.

Must have IMHO: Screen, speaker, camera, physical power button, physical data/charge port, physical volume buttons.

Like to have IMHO: Home button, at least some bezel to “protect” the screen for finger/gripping and to be able to use a case.

Care less about: Colors other than black, minimal bezels

Can't speak for the 2016 SE,
I'd still be on the OG SE, which I loved, except that OS updates about a year ago killed the battery life. I could literally watch it count down percentage.

It's the first time I've had an OS update just flat blow the brains out of an Apple product.

“In terms of product development, Apple is staying with the plan to release its third-generation iPhone SE in 1Q22 and four models under a new series in 2H22”
That means we will still get a new mini
Unfortunately for Mini fans, no, the rumor is that the flagship lineup in 2022 will feature two 6.1" models (one Pro and one non-Pro) and two 6.7" models (also one Pro and one non-Pro). No 5.4" model is rumored to be included in that upcoming lineup.
