Can we just skip this year and go straight to 2020?

I replaced by battery last yr on my 6s for $29.00, was draining bad and several shutdowns. Went to Apple last weekend, diagnosis showed bad battery they gave me last yr, failed tests and even showed several shutdowns so they knew I wasn’t lying. Got free battery replacement. Now I have brand new battery, 6s will now last me till 2020. Thanks Apple for servicing and supporting my 6s. Love this phone.

The new iPhone names will be iPhone X.5 iPhone XS Max.5 iPhone XR.5.
Are you asking why .5? Well, quite simply there will not be much difference to the last years’ model.

Macrumors: where you can tell the world that you're NOT BUYING something!

Even before android options became serious competition in the age of "iPhone Killers" people would post about how they're not going to buy something, only to buy it and have it in their signatures in time for the next round of "I'm not buying this unless/design is un Apple-like/it looks exactly the same" posts the following year.

I’m not buying another phone with an intel chip. I prefer to be able to talk on the phone versus dropped calls and texts that hang for minutes before sending with “2 bars of lte”.

One job Apple, make a phone that can compete with other phones at being a phone.

Show me the watch series 5

yeah there's a town over from where i am that has a shopping strip, and even during not terribly busy times i get "horrible" service out there. 2 bars and lte but it almost operates as if there is no service.

Or get on Wifi - where all other phones will not leverage that for SMS. Working in places with crappy service every day, Apple's approach is far better for connectivity.
Um, no. The phone should be able to get the cell signal, if it had a decent chip in it (unless you are in a location where it is being blocked). We are paying around $1000 for phones and I shouldn't have to provide the signal for it.

Is there a story on why that is? I've always wondered.

Apple is notoriously tight on all of their keynote addresses. They have them scripted down to the minute. [strikethrough]Therefore, if the keynote starts at 9am (pacific time) Apple is fairly certain that they will be showing off pictures of the new iPhone 41 minutes into the keynote (at 9:41am).[/strikethrough]

EDIT: Forgot that keynotes start at 10an pacific, not 9am. However, the idea is still correct.

[/we now return you to the in-edited portion of our comments]

It’s the same reason we can infer the date of the keynote, because of the date on the calendar app

It’ll take a lot for me to upgrade from my XS, Apple better impress me.

planning on keeping my XS for another 2 years

From a different perspective, I would wager most who already own the iPhone XS, wouldn’t have interest in upgrading anyways. Reason being, consumers generally don’t upgrade their iPhones on an annual basis, (unless they’re specific to the iPhone upgrade program). Phones generally are just too expensive today and there probably isn’t enough new features to compel someone to upgrade from an iPhone that’s less than a-year-old.

Now, if you had an older generation iPhone model (6s/7), you’d probably be the more the target demographic for upgrading for the 2019 iPhone, if someone was in the market to upgrade.

Not everyone upgrades every year. 11 will probably appeal to plenty of people who has a 6, 7, or 8 model.

After all the wait for those people (myself included), you can't shake the "that's all?" meh-ness. The 2019 phone is a lame stopgap in anticipation for the 2020 blockbuster. We don't want to wait yet another year, but we don't want to throw over 1000 down the drain for a 3 year old looking phone with a barfnotch and a camera tumor either. That's a first world problem alright.

Is it too much to ask for a normal sized phone for around $500? I am still using my 6s. Would like slightly more screen without larger size.
iPhone 8 starts at $400 with the 4.7 inch screen. And you get TouchID if you prefer it.
I hear you though. All the talk of a 6.5 inch phone this year has me bracing for the $1400 price tag. I won't be in at that price point.

Edit: That price is with trade in, of course but still not bad...
