because they will not be selling it at as a video ipod, just an updated ipod that will replace the top end ones right now.. just one of the new features are video.

Ah, so because it plays video and it replaces the top end means the video aspect totally new to Apple and the iPod and may be only one of few such devices warrants neglecting the video screen?!!?

The pictures are real -- in the sense that they really are from the front of the California Theatre in downtown San Jose.

And watching video on a 2 3/4" screen would be a step up from this, the original Sony Watchman http://www.transistor.org/collection/sony/sony31.html. I just dug mine up and was surprised it still works. Picture is clear b/w but is very small. Thing's about the size of a VHS videocasette and weighs about as much as a brick.

I think a lot of people are going to be disappointed if all we see today from Apple is something iPod related, whether it's larger capacities or the fabled video iPod. If there are no computer updates wahtsoever, people are not going to be happy. ;)

As for the screen displayed in that ad, I don't know why Apple would include a 4:3 screen, not HD (and this is supposed to be the year of HD!), and have it take up such little space. Ah well, guess we'll find out in less than an hour now...

With how secretive Apple usually is even up to the last few minutes before a keynote with its black curtains, I highly doubt if there is a so called 'one more thing' here today that this is it. I doubt that Steve would one-up himself with posters out on the street.

thats what i was thinking. the iPod is not the main attraction today, there will be a new one for sure. he's just teasing us with a whiff of whats to come i think.

Actually, i think it's fake. I enhanced it in photoshop, and you can clearly see some artifacts (more than normal) around the headphone chord, where it was probably moved from it's original position. I'm not sure if you'll be able to tell on this photo, but:

Could be mobile phone quality so I guess it is probably real.

I've been absolutely stunned by the sheer weight of rumoring/reporting that's gone on from everyone about video iPods. It's like... an obsession. *shrug* Weird.

Welcome to MacRumors! The scary thing is, I've seen worse on this site.

I would hate for it to be maintanance on this of all days, and it gives all the Apple contact numbers for various countries?

I cannot remember if the Japan site went down any earlier than the others on previous annoncement days? Maybe the time difference and Japan labour law means that we are off to an early start... here is wishing. i will kep checking back to see if it is up and any different...

Someone posted HL was also down, could be that Chinese characters need extra work!

All (well THE) Nano adverts are just the ipod on a black background. If apple has taken such a step in the marketing why would they revert to the silhouette design on an iPod where the screen - and more importantly what is on the screen - is so important. In these adverts you can't even see what is on the screen.

I'm also fairly sure Steve isn't stupid enough to let some press company put up posters RIGHT NEXT TO THE THEATRE where the world's press are waiting for an announcement - maybe it's just a mood setting piece rather than an advert...

the UK one is still working here. its like a wave passing over earth. ooo quite creepy feeling. the blanket will hit us soon.

Perhaps it's to get us guys hyped and of to A&E (Emergency Room) before they announce major PM and PB relaese, just to show there is actually more than iPods to apple these days.

But gives a huge flurry of speculation.

Wlll this be on the BBC next?

what if the posters are genuine fakes? they are the new black curtain. they were put up to make the building look pretty and generate plenty of interest but then when the event gets underway they will pull them down revealing the real new ipod.

just a thought.

The screen is way too small to see any decent video.. I was hoping they'd put it horizontally so it could take a lot more space. I'd be interested in getting a video player to watch movies on long bus trips but this tiny display is no good :(

I hope it's a fake!

Exactly. I was hoping for an Archos-style form factor, with basically the same dimension as the current iPod but with most of the front covered with a display and the click wheel... well, Jonathan Ive gets the big bucks for a good reason.

Apple's smarter

Stinking Jobs knows human psychology so well...he releases the nano before the mini wave dies down and now he's releasing the new video ipod.
The posters outside the arena are for updates to the regular ipod, and then there's a video ipod which is priced at $399, and has a landscape screen. with the small scrolling wheel on the side.

this ipod that you're seeing on the add has a touchpad like controller on the bottom that has the controls that light up under the touchpad.
