How can a bigger screen make the videos look worse?

If they don't bump the resolution a larger screen can make things look terrible. It's not so noticeable at the small sizes of iPod screens but even the 2.5" 320x240 screen on the iPod classic looked better than the 3" 320x240 screen on the first Zune.

You guys are so far off it's not even funny

Here's the real photo of the next real Mac iPod Nano...

Now that's a sweet design...

Does anyone think that the iPod Touch will have any significant changes?

I'm just wondering whether it's worth it to wait til September to buy one...

My thoughts for the touch

  • 8GB will be dropped. (same with the nanos including 4GB) 16 and 32 will be the main ones. Each will drop $100.
  • Thinner design
  • Added external volume buttons with play, pause fast forword and rewind
  • Brighter screen
  • 2.1 firmware
  • Strainless Steal or plastic back. No more chorme
  • Perhaps new color options

It might be a small change, but could also be very significant. If you have to have one now then go ahead... but I would absolutely wait a month.

just saw this mockup posted in a brazilian blog, from an album on flickr, looks really nice to me, the guy did a great job..
<images>

Those are very nice looking. Except for no evidence of how the scrollwheel label transition will take place, they are what I'd except from the new Nanos. I'd also expect a colour that doesn't look so "executive".

I'm in the market for a Touch and I'm going to wait a month. I need to save the cash for one but I would've waited anyways.

I only expect minor changes like a choice of black or white plastic backs to match the iPhone (although GPS would be nice though!) but I'm also hoping for a price drop on the 16GB/32GB models too :)

They're garbage.

Is it touch screen or scroll wheel? The designer needs to choose, but then again, he/she is a designer and not an engineer. If it touch, loose the wheel and keep the pasted iPhone UI.

If it's scroll wheel, then bring back the original iPod UI.

Then again, the design is still garbage.

You keep saying it's garbage but you aren't explaining what about it is garbage.

It's obviously a touch wheel, and not a scroll wheel. The fact that button labels change per rotation signify that.

I think what Digital Skunk is saying is that since the mockup uses a click wheel, the regular iPod UI is better for it than the iPhone UI.

Dude, it doesnt make any sense, all apple products, at least the last ones have anti reflex screens, so will the ipod nano have. That screen is totally reflective, you could see the light abave the guy that took the photos...

However, i like more the actual ipod nano, i think they should build an ipod nano with touch screen and no wheel. Same size as the actual!

Man - a limited edition RED steampunk/retro version. I'd imagine it'd sell well.

I think what Digital Skunk is saying is that since the mockup uses a click wheel, the regular iPod UI is better for it than the iPhone UI.

Isn't the clickwheel a great place to try haptics? presumably, if done right, you could actually create the clickwheel anywhere within the middle part of the screen you put your finger, or maybe one side. or as shown previously, one part of the screen is haptic and touchscreen enabled. then you get the flat surface. But then i'm sure Digital Skunk might not like it hehe ;)

They've got the patents on it, and surely theres been some internal skunk work on it - they're presumably one of the leaders now in terms of touch screen phones / consumer products in the world?

Think about it for 2 seconds, why would apple make such a design that differs SO MUCH from what they just released? They have no products that are oval shaped. It has been rounded rectangles since the iBook G4 and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

Every year they've come out with a new Nano that renders previous cases incompatible.

It will likely happen again this year, even if those mockups are not the real deal.

In general this is true.

But slightly increasing the 2" Nano screen wouldn't make it look subjectively worse than the current Nano, because of its high pixel density. It's 320 x 240, just like the bigger Classic screen. And if these mockups are indicative of the real product, the screen will still be smaller than the Classic screen.

Ummm...this is pretty big news- anyone else hear this?

If Leo Laporte is actually convinced by some images we haven't seen, then I would tend to believe it too.

Yes. Kevin sent him images that I gathered were uncropped images that showed technical notes or other such things that convinced Leo it wasn't just a fake image.

I'm listening to the podcast right now, very interesting stuff.

Kevin Rose obviously has more detailed images, he sent them to Leo right in the middle of the podcast. It's not just product photos, it's some sort of document (brochure, internal Apple doc, etc.)

Leo commented that if it was a fake, it was a very good fake. He concluded with, "Okay I believe you now." Kevin also re-iterated that iPod Touch prices were coming down.

He also said his source on the iTunes 8 stuff was different. Finally, he cautioned that he doesn't know any of this stuff for sure, it's just stuff he's getting from his sources. I think that's an indication of good faith on his part, it's not like he's coming out and bragging about know what Apple is coming out with next.

So I guess we'll see what comes out... :)
