I use my iPod at home all the time, I don't understand what kind of point you're trying to make. He is probably making the distinction between his professional life and everything else.

I, for one, would rather hold an iPod if I'm wearing headphones, rather than have a 50 foot headphone cord plugged into an Airport.

Not everyone uses speakers, even in their own house, especially headphone enthusiasts, like myself. Check www.head-fi.org and you'll find plenty others.
I wasn't making a point..
I seriously wanted to know why people use an iPod at home is all.ok? :)

I still am dumbfounded with the idea that curtains on an invitation means that there will be a video iPod or iTMS movie downloading/streaming or whatever. Granted that there could be an anouncement to that effect on Wednesday but really... I think that it's more likely that the "pro" line will get updated. Here are a couple reasons why I think that the curtains are more indicitive of this scenario.
[snip..]
Forget "the year of HD" phrase Jobs said already. He called 2005 that simply because of iMovie HD and because of low prices on prosumer HDV cameras. Nothing more. Coming up with an HD anything with less than 90 days before the year is over and calling it the year of HD because of that is completely ridiculous.
Get an iBook and capture and edit HDV footage and tell me it doesn't work. Get a PowerBook and it's even better of course. Panasonic had already made a big deal about editting DVCPRO HD on PowerBooks as well. There's nothing new about HD on laptops coming up that would make this the year of HD. If you want uncompressed, get a PowerMac, because no current Apple laptop hardrive can be striped to allow you to handle the bandwidth required.
I'm not saying that PowerMacs or PowerBooks won't be updated. I'm only saying that it has nothing to do with the whole "year of HD" thing, which, as I already said, was because of iMovie HD and because of Sony's CEO presenting their HDV prosumer camera on the same stage as Jobs.

Could it be that we are reading too much into the curtains!?
Couuld it be that Steve Jobs just loves to see the rumor sites run rampant. What a PR campaign we give to Apple. :D

The pockets on the jeans from the last invitation were a big part of the nano presentation in the last Special Event, so the curtains probably relate to the main thing to be presented... Unless they simple represent the place it'll be held in (the theatre).

I think its time for Apple to “grow up” and quit expecting all of this fan-fare around new product announcements.

Let's be honest, although we all pretend not to...we love it really :D ;)

(the title is a play on the 'Hello' and 'Hello, again' imagery from two previous Apple landmark announcements...in case you didn't get my criptic frame of mind at present)

Still drunk so sorry if this doesn't flow well, and I am trying to remember what everyone else has said...

What if Apple is working on a tablet-style device, it would go along with the home theatre/media center rumors that are out and about right now?

- a device with video capability you can connect to a TV...
- Apple has received new video/multi-media chips...
- video content via iTMS (iTunes Multimedia Store)...
- talk of new screens in production in China (in some other recent thread)...
- BBC's 'oops' we broadcast something we shouldn't have...

Who says a video iPod or iPod AV or iPod multi-media has to have the same / similar form factor to the current iPods. The 7schuffle ws different, the 'mini a take on the original and the 'nano several Darwinian steps up the iPod evolution ladder. So a new tablet-style device could have an iPod feel but not form factor - and be more...

Who know...time for bed (12.56 am here and the alcohol is making me see little dancing iPod's)

I've suggested this before and I think it's a great idea. What better way to get people using OSX than on a tablet-type device that people think is an iPod. In reality, it would be much more but it would still carry the iPod moniker. Talk about a halo effect.

Squire

if you people want an ipod with video capability why dont you just get ipod linux? my brother has a color screen ipod and i put it on for him and he uses it all the time. i got him the nightly build and its not hard to install. yeah its a little buggy but for the overall functionality and quality it works awesome.

POWERBOOK!

So I just bought my new powerbook two weeks (12 in superdrive) ago tomorrow after waiting soo long for a an update, so I decided to buy it the last day of the free printer and ipod student promotion. And now what do I hear... a possible update next week. DANG. If they happen to update on wed. is there any possible way to get the new one without buying an entire new unit. That would not be a good feeling of having a mega awesome update on the 12 in. powerbook right after I buy it and only a couple days past the 2 week return date. Any suggestions or insight or perhaps any personal experience would be great.

Oh yeah Ive never owned a mac before and I already love it.. i think im transformed after only 2 weeks. Thanks in advance

No video iPod just yet does make sense in some respects, since Apple might feel it would hurt nano sales, since it is another new, exciting product which has just been released. Perhaps Apple feels that a simple capacity boost to the main model won't detract from the nano's spotlight right now as much as a video iPod would. And that capacity boost would then lend itself nicely to when the iPod does indeed go video. Tough to say.

Well, reagrdless, we know something is coming on the 12th, maybe multiple things - it will be good times no matter what!

I would try to take it back immediatly. The place you bought it from might not know about the updates. If they dont accept it, then mention the update when it happens. where did you get it from?

These rumor sites can't just keep giving me things, and then taking them away. That's mean.

I'm actually sort of happy about the new rumors... I would like an updated Powerbook lots, and I strangly don't want a video iPod. I know that's weird, but  :p

wow people are just stupid. the photo from engadget was a fake that was from a toshiba or one of those companys pda. its their load up screen. the ipods wouldnt look anything like that. plus the two edges are different, ones rounded the other isnt, and the angle of the screen doesnt line up with the body of the ipod.

Evidence of Movies and the video iPod???

When you go to http://www.apple.com/music you're automatically redirected by the Web Server to the Apple iPod and iTunes page.

If you then attemp to go to http://www.apple.com/movies you'll get the generic Apache Web Server

Forbidden

You don't have permission to access /movies on this server.

Is this evidence of an upcoming Movies page for the much rumored video iPod?

Neither do I but video is OBVIOUSLY not going to happen... you only have to read the over confident posts of some people on here to see that.

You can deduce Apple's plans by analysing rumor site posts' confidence?

Just an iPod and ProMac Update. I Think Not!

I think the rumor sites have it wrong.

A Special event just for a bigger music iPod and/or increased resolution on PM displays!! If that was all, Steve Jobs could not entice any more jouralists to such a lame event.

No the announcement will be much more significant.

Simply by changing every day (or several times a day) what the rumor sites think will be the announcement at next week's October 12th Red Curtain event is clear proof that the "inside" info they once enjoyed has dried up, and they feel a need to at put out so many choices, that in the coming months, they will be able to humbly state "As correctly forcast on Think Secret last October" (but please forget that we forecast everything else from Video iPods, Video Airport Expresses, Intel Macs, etc etc)

Come on guys, this is good news, rumor sites have returned to rumors and guessing sites,it allows the magic to return of anticipation, and that is good for all of us.

Ever been given a present to open on your birthday, but already knew what was in the parcel, how much better to not know, and to go through the thrill of seeing something totally unexpected when you open the parcel, (or in this case.. the Red Curtain opens... to One More Thing"

Great let's all dream, guess, anticipate, but let the magic return to Mac Enthusiasts everywhere by not allowing "inside" information to spoil the outcome.

I am sure Steve Jobs and Apple will have some magic come 12th October, and I am sure the rumor sites will keep changing their rumors, but who cares, let's look forward to the 12th, like we are about to unwrap that birthday present of which we have no idea what is in there.. and enjoy!

The invite for the iPod nano featured a close-up of the coin pocket on a pair of jeans with the 1,000 songs tagline. It proved true on both counts with the 4GB model holding 1,000 songs and Steve Jobs pulling an iPod nano out of his coin pocket. Now we have a second invite featuring red curtains along with the one more thing tagline. It's clearly a follow up to the previous invite so you have to ask yourself what would have been shown if he had said "one more thing" at the end of the last event. It seems clear to me that it will be iPod related.

Let's review what we know:

Apple has been hiring people with video codec knowledge for the iPod team since late last year.

Apple has been in talks with recording companies over licensing video content for a video-capable version of the iPod due this fall.

A member of this forum, podfuture, who nailed the iPod nano specs (including the odd headphone location which no one would have guessed) has since provided details of the video iPod from the same source.

The BBC (who will be carrying the event in the UK) accidentally let it slip yesterday that Apple would be announcing a video iPod on the 12th.

The writing is on the wall folks!

Now I have no doubt that both the PowerBooks and PowerMacs are due for an update but that is no reason to hold a special event. I still say the best course of action would to to*announce the PowerBooks and PowerMacs with press releases on 10/07 and 10/11 respectively. The financial conference call on 10/11 would give Apple an opportunity to discuss the new PowerMacs as well as the PowerPC to Intel transition. Then on 10/12 the new video iPod and video content strategy would be unveiled and discussed at length. The event could open with a review of iPod nano sales, the new PowerMac release, etc. before getting to the heart of the matter.

Must be big iPod news or Apple's PR would have stepped in by now

Considering how the press has hyped the video iPod idea, Apple's PR department would certainly have lept into "expectation management" mode by now if these reports were wrong - otherwise imagine how embarrasing it would be next week. Apple would be under the spotlight of the global media, all anticipating another amazing iPod launch, and instead, Steve Jobs just delivers a curtain call for PowerPC Macs.

If the rumors were completely wrong, all it would take is for someone at Apple's PR agency to "off the record" mention to a friendly journalist that this video iPod rumor is a little off track and the problem would be sorted.

It is strange that Apple would launch another iPod so soon after the iPod nano launch, but I can't see any other more adequate explanation.

Think Secret used to have very reliable sources, but they seem to be really oscilating on this one - the position they're taking now I suspect is just to hedge their bets.

Well Put! The first thing I thought when I saw the invite was that it was some sort of thing that was left out of the last Media Event. It makes sense, they used that Theatre to release the Photo Pod Last year, so why not use to intro the Vpod this year.

I've said this before, but On CNBC after the Nano's were announced, Steve was Interviewed and was asked about what's going on with Video Content, he said "We will have a deal in the not too distant future".

No doubt PB's and PM's will be updated, But I don't think Mr. Jobs would drag all of the media there for that.

Again, I wish we had Time Machines!
