What about the possiblity of having a tablet pc? I know they got a patent on a design for one a few months ago. Do you think they will wait until they have intel chips to bring it ou?

Integrating Mac with existing tech

Peace has a good point. The Mac Mini was designed to take advantage of technology that already existed in the home of PC users (monitor, mouse, keyboard). Making a device that could fit in snuggly with that other ubiquitous item, the TV, would make sense in terms of this precedent.

I used to think that my colleagues that obsessed about Mac rumours were crazy. Now I can't stop reading.

I disagree. A bigger screen and able to play all video formats would rock. You could say the same thing about the ipod photo. Why would someone want to look at photos on the go? Its all about traveling. Being able to record your favorite shows via eyetv and put them on your video ipod for that 14 hr plane trip to england would be awesome. Videos of the kids, videos related to work in the film industry and ofcourse porn.

how many people do you really think want to watch a movie on a 2" screen? or here's a better question: how many people are going to be taking 14 hour plane rides often enough to see a need for a personal video player? i think most people who will be taking these flights will have plenty of work to keep them busy for those 14 hours, not to mention sleep to catch up on.
as for videos related to work in the film industry, almost anyone that fits into that category is going to have a powerbook on them at all times.

The iPod Video isn't just for storing videos..
It's for streaming video wirelessly!!
Who wouldn't want to use it for some stream when your sittin on a bus or in the bathroom or ANYWHERE there is WiFi ?

Why ThinkSecret is reporting otherwise

I think it's an out of court agreement.

For the next 12 months, Nick dePlume has promised Apple he'll debunk every news story, regardless of the truth behind it. ie:

Rumor: Apple is releasing video iPods next week!
TS: No they aren't!

Rumor: Apple is releasing Intel Macs in January!
TS: No, Apple will never release an Intel based Mac
Rumor: But Steve said...
TS: NO! NO INTEL MACS! NEVER!

Rumor: Steve Jobs drinks coffee
TS: NEVER! Jobs is a TEA man through and through!

News: There's some minor PowerBook updates due at MacWorld
TS: MacWorld? MacWorld does not exist.
News: Erm, I'm at MacWorld, it's the first day, it started today.
TS: THERE'S NO SUCH THING! NO MACWORLD!
News: Ok, but anyway, the buzz here is that they're going to release a PowerBook that runs at nearly 1.6GHz
TS: What's a PowerBook?
News: You know, Apple's laptops
TS: Apple? Who are Apple? And what's a laptop?

...etc...etc...

Makes sense

Makes sense. Though I'm hoping he'll pull a One Mre Thing, sicne it's boring.

Oh yeah, and I just got a 4G Color, expecting the 5G in January.

I find it hard to believe that iPods still won't be able to playback video, be it in any quality. What would the theatre curtains have to do with PowerMac and PowerBooks? I don't think it means higher resolution screen on PBs, because that would leave out the PMs. The Airport Express AV seems to be a likely product, but a whole event over a just that?
Well, I prefer ANY PM and PB updates than a video store and a videoless-iPod.

Could it be that we are reading too much into the curtains!?

Don't think so...

Visualize...

your at a movie theatre waiting to watch a movie( analogy..we're sittin here waiting too)..you get there a few minutes early and what do you see??

Normally red curtains..Until the movie starts.

I'm actually betting that Phil Schiller and Avi Tevdanian will announce that Jon Rubinstein is actually Ellen Hancock in disguise. Steve Wozniak will bitch smack Jean-Louis Gasse just for being French. Then Steve Jobs will quit as CEO and state that Arn has been personally picked as his replacement.
Its going to be one hell of a good time.

New Video Ipod don't think so

Since Apple sent out media invitations for a special announcement on October 12th, the rumor mill has been buzzing. There have been reports of a video iPod, an Airport Express with Video, as well as PowerMac and Powerbook updates.

ThinkSecret amends their earlier PowerMac/Powerbook rumor report with some further details of the upcoming media event.

According to the rumor site, Apple will be delivering an iPod update alongside Pro Mac updates... but ThinkSecret reports that Apple will not be delivering a Video-capable iPod. This is contrary to a recent claim by Appleinsider.

The new iPod will boost storage capacity to 80GB as well as what appears to be minor cosmetic and interface changes. ThinkSecret maintains that there will be no Video iPod, which is in concordance with historic comments by Steve Jobs.

Meanwhile, PowerMac and Powerbook updates are still expected but details are still limited.

IMO I think that apple will come out with a new mini mac. followed by a cheaper version of the current diplays and final revial the long awaited power book. I would also like to note that the power book / new ibook will be black similar to the Tiger / nano website and the new Nana that is all black. You can't stay white forever!

The "how many people" posts are relevant but miss the point somewhat.

How many people want a portable contact list that you can't edit on the device? Very few, but who cares as it's built into all iPods.

How many people want a portable photo player? Very few, but who cares as it's built into all iPods.

How many people want portable video? Very few, but who cares because it will be built into all iPods.

The biggest technical change was actually switching to a color screen, and that's already done. The current iPod also already has audio and video out to display photos (and video) on a big screen. PortalPlayer chips that do video are already available and already go into some iPods (video is just not utilized.) Add maybe a bigger screen, and that's about it.

The most amount of effort is actually lining up good content for the device, which Apple in particular has the skills and experience to do.

Look, Apple needs to evolve and grow the iPod line to maintain its $299 and above price. And just increasing capacity isn't enough, because while nice for many the extra capacity already isn't worth it for a lot of people (which is why the smaller iPods sell better.)

In 2 years, the starter iPod will probably be 40GB and have video as well. And it will cost $249 to 299. Can anyone tell me why they would specifically prefer a same-priced 40GB iPod without video? I say this because the cheapest full-sized iPod will probably be $249 to $299 regardless of the feature set...

I still think it's more likely that we'll see the iPod Video. I do agree with you, though. The Mac mini is certainly due for an update, along with the appearance of the iBooks and PowerBooks.

I spent a little time playing with iTunes today, and for the first time added my own movies to the iTunes library. I never realized just how much integration of video there is in iTunes. All Apple needs to do is add the necessary support in the iPod (which isn't rocket science), and we're pretty much done!

If there's going to be no video iPod then please make it an iPod with scroll wheel, it's a much slicker design than the click wheel which is cheap IMO.

Is everyone still forgetting the damn red movie curtain and no updates to the videos on iTunes?

You guys are all missing the obvious... Apple is going to give up on the whole computer / music industry so they can focus on making movies. They're thinking that Pixar just isn't cutting it with consumers these days, and they plan to compete for that business.

I still am dumbfounded with the idea that curtains on an invitation means that there will be a video iPod or iTMS movie downloading/streaming or whatever. Granted that there could be an anouncement to that effect on Wednesday but really... I think that it's more likely that the "pro" line will get updated. Here are a couple reasons why I think that the curtains are more indicitive of this scenario.

1) As someone eluded to, the curtains look like those from iDVD. Last time I checked you can't use iDVD on an iPod, and you have to use an actual computer to create dvd or HD content.

2) Year of HD. Currently only the top of the line Powermac can edit two uncompressed HD streams at the same time. Seems pretty weak if only one computer in the entire line-up can edit HD content somewhat effectively, especially when it is supposed to be the year of HD.

3) As Thinksecret stated... the pro line is taking a big slide in sales and needs some updating before it takes an even bigger turn for the worse.

4) It would be ridiculous to come out with another iPod so close to the nano. I've heard that the sales of it are a lot lower than they anticipated to date. Why would they bring something else out that would be in competition with it.

My speculation is that a new iPod with minor revisions will probably be shown at the presentation next week, just in time for the christmas rush, but the main attraction is going to be the Dual core Powermacs, and possibly an updated Powerbook.

I don't see how a dual dual core system would be considered a minor update? especially if there are other internal updates as well. As for the G5 being on its way out the door and that Apple won't be doing any sort of Keynote presentations for the G5s any more... I think that's a bunch of garbage. The transition to Intel isn't supposed to be complete until the end of 2007... that's oh... over 2 years away? When most people on here think that apple should be updating their computers ever 6 months... that's 4 updates. I think that the G5 is going to be around in the pro line for quite some time... at least until january/march 07 so some major work needs to be done so that the computer has some "legs" over the next 1 1/2 - 2 years.

As for the Powerbook... it definitely is in need of an upgrade. Unfortunately, I think that apple painted themselves into a corner on that one. I'm hoping that this new OS X update that everyone is talking about allows the OS take advantage of some of the new hardware. We'll see though.

On that note... I think I'm done my rant. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a new powermac because my g4 667 is in desparate need of replacement.

Perhaps you're right. Maybe the curtains mean that they will present a movie clip in the movie theatre, using high definition off of an updated PowerBook. :)

I really wish Apple would quit this whole waiting game tactic altogether. I mean, is it really necessary for Apple to go to such extreme precautions to protect information related to new product updates anymore?

I can certainly understand why they wouldn’t want to divulge new product information within a few *months/years* before it is ready for mass distribution, but why the need to keep new products shrouded in mystery when you're within a *week* of making the announcement. Granted there was a time when this strategy was necessary for the sake of Apples bottom line, but that’s not the case anymore – Apples accumulated a massive profit from the success of the iPod.

I think its time for Apple to “grow up” and quit expecting all of this fan-fare around new product announcements.

Please don't take this personally ok? but..

I notice your "home life" includes iPod's..Why do you use them at home?
Forgive me but I don't own an iPod and just want to know the benefits to using one in your home..

For the record my home is completely wireless..I use 3 Airports for playing music and the internet..

Would you be here talking about the announcement, adding over 300 comments in one day, generating press and excitement and then waiting with anticipation for the final moment it is revealed, if they just came out and said it?

Why can't Apple send out an invitation with a week's notice so everyone can get ready to make some time and see whats happening? Seems smart to me.

If they just announced stuff without any warning, it would be like a friend calling you up to hang out without any warning: maybe you could come over right then, maybe not, it wouldn't be a big deal. But if they sent you an invitation beforehand and said how cool a party it was going to be, you'd be psyched.

I use my iPod at home all the time, I don't understand what kind of point you're trying to make. He is probably making the distinction between his professional life and everything else.

I, for one, would rather hold an iPod if I'm wearing headphones, rather than have a 50 foot headphone cord plugged into an Airport.

Not everyone uses speakers, even in their own house, especially headphone enthusiasts, like myself. Check www.head-fi.org and you'll find plenty others.

Don't you all see what's happening, don't you?

This red curtain is his answer to old black one from Paris. What did we get then, a bloody dot (.). Time for the real Mccoy. Steve is the man.
