Honestly, I just hope the 17" gets a bump next week so I know I am buying at the current "peak." But getting my wish list will make me feel better about dropping that much money...
Ordering the week of the announcement is always a good thing for peace of mind. And then when they announce the next upgrade, at least you've had the system for several months and don't feel so bad about not having the latest and greatest model.

I do hope Apple goes as far as they can with this next set of upgrades, but at the same time I hope it isn't enough to make we want to upgrade mine. A new PowerMac gets bought first.

Yes, majority of people would not watch feature length movie on a 1.5 x 1.5 screen, plus add in the fact that MPAA is not ready to deal with legal downloads on a mass scale. and the fact how many movies could you actually store on 80 gigs of the quality you would be willing to pay for.

However, think about it this way, video is a nice extra to have on your iPod as such as pictures are today. Not many use it but it is a nice feature to have and a great way to carry a picture slide show with you or download pictures form your camera. Great extra but not the primary use.
Yep, that's the approach that makes sense to me until the time is right to do something more really WELL and have it be well-received.

Special edition Ipod Madonna

I am scared to think what that would look like.

Either bright pink and yellow... or it will be preloaded with every c*ktease video Madonna every regurgitated.

$

I know...

It will be a special edition Serenity iPod with the movie soundtrack already loaded on it. As well as the various movie trailers for Serenity.

[Why not, everybody else is starting special edition iPod rumors.]

So if you think we're confident to get an upgrade of say Powerbooks or Powermacs? you would order now!? or wait until monday? I want a 12" and it's still showing 24hrs in the UK Store... so I don't want to order it now.

I think differnt. Therefore I'm going to lie down now!...

Well, until something is announced, we don't really know if it's the week of the announcement for that that product/update. Also, if you ordered now, you would be ordering the current product and not what has been announced, so who knows what would happen.

Well, the red curtains say "Twin Peaks" to me :) But Universal made Serenity and they ARE the one talking about downloadable movies this week... and after all, the 3rd DVD did have a Mac batwing keyboard :p (and a PowerMate--but better disguised than in The Island where they just stuck the PowerMate on the wall).

But please no more special editions. I've only just got over the Harry Potter one :p

Your point is good... I will go to the back of the line, wait and be patient!

But saying that I have heard that when people buy just before the update that they then get contacted by Apple to see if they want to get the original product that they ordered or if they want to get the new one... Happened with one of my friends when he ordered the G5...

But I hear you... it's too risky.

Waiting for Powermac and Powerbook updates

is just like

Waiting for some nookie!

you hope that its going to be good and you'd be willing to pay if its really good! And if its pathetic, you'll complain to your friends until you get some more.

Really...? I thought they looked more like the eminem show to me.

That could spurn a whole rapper onslaught of limited editions... 50cent... GUnit! All encrusted in different shades of bling.

So if Apple was going to revise the whole itMS and possibly iTunes itself to be more video friendly, why would they just release iTunes 5 with the ipod nano. If they did have plans for the video ipod, why not wait and release iTunes that had more video options. If they are going to created a video ipod, wouldnt itunes need to have a drastic change?

Why is a video ipod so unlikely? There are tons of video ipod like devices on the market today. I am hoping for a dual core powermac myself.

A valid question. But to speculate wildly for fun and profit: it's just within the realm of possibility that a small patch could enable things ALREADY in iTunes 5. Hidden data/images relating to video HAS been found in the app. (But I've always thought video iTunes made more sense than a video iPod, for now.)

those devices you speak of don't make any money. no one wants them. there's no market for them. the regular user doesn't see a need for watching videos on the go.

Could be a porn pod. Loaded with porn videos. No more lugging the powerbook to the bathroom.... yeah thats gross.

Nope.

I've been told by a friend of a friend, of a pet, who's owner knows some one who works in Apple that:

The curtains represent Good bye to Mac OS.

Not only are Apple moving to Intel, as we all know, but in fact, are dropping Mac OS for Windows. Apple think that Windows will prove to be more reliable and a better user experience for all Mac owners all round.

:D

Ya maybe, but if I was going to release a video ipod, i would want to release it as a new version of iTunes because it is such a huge step. Does anyone else think is would be wierd to look back at itunes 5.0.2 as the version iTunes video came out?

I disagree. A bigger screen and able to play all video formats would rock. You could say the same thing about the ipod photo. Why would someone want to look at photos on the go? Its all about traveling. Being able to record your favorite shows via eyetv and put them on your video ipod for that 14 hr plane trip to england would be awesome. Videos of the kids, videos related to work in the film industry and ofcourse porn.

They dont have apples marketing behind them.

What did you compress your music at? My audio library has around 16 days of music and it is over 26 GB in size (about 2/3 from CDs and he rest iTMS). I also have around 25 GB of photos that is nice to keep on my iPod as well for those ad-hoc family / friend get-togethers.

128 and up. My library is 54 gigs. so, no, I'm not carrying my whole library, but I find I can always find something I'd like to listen to within the 20 gigs. Maybe I'd like thirty, but still, the current top of 60 gigs... that's just huge. I don't know anybody personally who would need more. I think the average music library is something less than ten gigs.

Well almost, I suppose I want a answer in some form. But not an argument.
Anyone know how many songs an 80GB iPod would hold.

I could do with a 10GB as I have nearly 5GB of music and could use the others for my contacts, photos and calendars.
Paying for 20GB iPod and not needing half of it. Well to sum that up, i'd be paying for an extra 10GB i don't need.

Or a 6GB Nano would be great :)

Right now I have 55 gigs of music in iTunes. I'm using a 30 gig iPod, so any time I want to add one song, I need to delete one song from the pod. I would definitely put photos on there, so the 80 gig would be perfect for me. And by the way, only about half my cds are even in iTunes, so that 80 gigs could easily be filled with music alone. And that's with encoding AAC @ 160 bits. See, when you're into the Dead, and Phish, and Widespread Panic, and other Jam Bands, you can't have enough shows.

It WOULD rock--for me and you and a certain number of others. (Long plane flights being one reason--but that's not everyday life for many people.)

But to play devil's advocate... almost NOBODY wants to look at photos on the go. But a LOT of people want to SHOW photos on the go--even if they have to pull paper snapshots out of their wallet to do it. Even better to have ALL your photos at your fingertips. ("This is another one of the back of my cat's head. Wait... come back...!")

So in that sense, the iPod photo features fit an existing widespread demand and existing widespread habits. Video features don't have that. People like to watch video at home or in a theater, not in public waiting places. They could be persuaded (carrying ALL your movies and TV favorites to your friend's house would be cool--with a few hundred GB storage) but they won't be persuaded quickly. So video is something for Apple to approach carefully.

Especially with Windows-trapped journalists doing the pee-pee dance waiting for something to say Apple "failed" at.

By Jove I've figured it out!

Sorry about posting in the wrong topic area but this iPod/PB thing has me all blurred..so..anyway..

We know there's gonna be an event at the California Theatre San Jose 10/12.
We know Apple has got space in London's BBC studio reserved 10/12..
We know the BBC is going to be opening up it's tele archive for d/l..

What better way to demonstrate this then to use a broadband connection in San Jose to "show" ( Curtains ) this streaming show from the BBC in London using the new iMovie Theatre device..Wirelessly...via Airport to ones television and or iPod video..
