recording

i guess we will see a device for recordings.
maybe a red "record" button on the ipod.
maybe a little hd-camcorder with an ipod as the storage.

The phrase "ONE more thing" seems odd if a whole raft of new stuff is going to be shown.

I do expect multiple products (big or small) soon. But I think some of them will be lower-key and not part of the "event." The Macs, would be my guess. Or if they are introduced before the event, they could be touched upon in the intro, before the focus turns to what's NEW at the event.

The MOST fun (other than Intel Macs early--yeah, right, I wish!) would be something new that nobody has quite predicted--and maybe nobody yet knows they need :) The video AirTunes rumor seems most tantalizing.

I'd hardly call dual dual-core powermacs boring!!
I didn't say dual core powermacs were boring.

I said the overall event is boring if the predictions are correctly, especially the predictions for PBs and ( non video ) iPods.

The 80GB iPod is useful for a few types of users:
  1. People with a large music library. (Yes there are lots of people who own over a thousand music CDs.)
  2. People with a large photo library they want to carry around/
  3. People carrying files around on the iPod. (Or using it to back up some data. But I hope that is not their only backup.)

Add to this list: People who have their music stored as lossless files

Let it be a tablet PC!

I want a tablet pc running mac os x! Maybe that will be the first intel port. That would fit my needs nicely.
Thanks,
Chris

Networked iPod??

I was just thinking to myself about a logical new ipod.. that would make more money for apple... and bring newcomers to the whole iPod market.

We have all seen that the new Motorola phone has itunes available on it. Apple must have made some type of deal with Motorola and Cingular to have iTunes on there phones.. what if part of the deal.,,, was to give network connectivity to ipods so that people could download music directly to there iPod without the need for a mac or PC.

Just a though......

Has anyone thought about linking this up with the leaked BBC story? The BBC is currently trialing a video on demand service so maybe they will be supplying some kind of exclusive content to an Apple Movie/Video service?

There is meant to be an announcement of something being broadcast on the beeb on the 12th.--Jon

any news service that "leaks" this information is just rehashing rumors that have turned into legit stories through the grape vine. they're the same sources and rumors we're reading about.

some thoughts. i agree, i dont think there will be a video iPod. it just doesnt make any sense. apple is right, nobody wants to walk around starting at a screen. think of all the fights that will happen on NYC streets b/c of the increase of collisions. mayhem. anyway, maybe apple is increasing screen resolution and size for better photo viewing. these first ipod photos are a real gimmick if you ask me. the pictures really look like crap. and i sure as hell wouldnt want to watch a movie or TV show on such a bad screen either. how is that fun?

so sure, update the iPod to 30 and 60/80 gb or whatever (remember the graphic slip-up on the apple site after they announced the nano) but it's not going to support video. thinner form factor, larger viewing screen with more info (see all id3 tag info maybe?), much better battery life, etc.

maybe if bluetooth is ever integrated it wont be for wireless headphones, it'll be for integration with your phone. so you're listening to a song and you get a call, your iPod pauses and says "incoming call". maybe you can navigate your calendar on your iPod and select "call Amy" and it signals your phone to make the call.

the only time that's going to happen is when apple develops/licenses some app that can rip DVDs directly to your iPod (or whatever it's called) for displaying purposes there only. like a video can only be played from the ipod onto which it was encoded.

if you think about it, audio is a passive experience and that is what the iPod is perfect at providing. it has succeeded b/c you can put it in your pocket and cary on with your day. a video changes everything. it's no longer a passive experience. you have to stop moving and watch. when apple does produce a portable video player, it will be a different form factor - maybe more in the style of the tablet idea. 4 hr battery life is fine, it gets 1-2 movies in just fine. large screen good for plane, car, bus, wherever. something multiple people can view. thats my thought. maybe after something like that is released Apple will release firmware to allow our iPods to play videos, but even then, it'll still be just a gimmick for the iPod. iPod = music. ? = video. they came up with a name for mobile music, they'll come up with a NEW one for mobile video.

edit: just read up the thread. someone made a good point. have we seen this red curtain before? does it signify "movie curtain"? home theatre integration device?

No ViPod

The reasons for no ViPod is because for the most part most would want to DL movies on to them...well to do this most would have to have broadband which most don't.

Until some form of broadband can cover about 75-80% of the USA I doubt we'll see any full feature movies anytime soon.

It would help if Apple came out with software that allowed you to rip your DVD's to a HD for backup or for your own personal usage.

If it is a viPod, I'm guessing that they will more strongly promote the ability to hook it to your TV, than they would you could display it on the device itself.

One More Thing...

You know... SJ Could announce all the updates to the Mac range and then do the whole 'oh and one more thing...' The crowd would cheer and the 'iPod Movie' (Sticking with the name!!!) could be revealed from behind the now infamous curtains...

I mean how long would it take to introduce the whole concept of the iPod Movie? It would take half hour max... there is going to more than one annoucement...

OK iTunes Movie Store... right but that would work with the iPod Movie and still take half hour max. So with that in mind what would be the point of hiring out that theatre in San Jose just for half an hour.

I think all our dreams and aspirations could come true on the 12th.

I just can't believe we've got 6 more days to speculate!!!! We're going to burst at the seams people! ;)

The amound of broadband coverage doesn't matter. It's whether enough people with broadband would download movies for the service to be cost effective to set up and charge reasonable fees for the content. And remember it's enough people in all the countries that Apple has this service and not just what they have in the US.

It would help if Apple came out with software that allowed you to rip your DVD's to a HD for backup or for your own personal usage.
This has some tricky legal implications (at least in the US) since DVDs are encrypted. Maybe Apple found a loophole in the law?

Either we're gonna see routine product updates Tuesday and/or Wednesday morning at their normal time (8AMish Eastern, 5AM ish Pacific) and something unexpected Wednesday at the press conference.

Or the press conference will be a full keynote style presentation and have several things announced with a one more thing at the end.

As for possibilitues:
  • Upgraded PowerBooks
  • Upgraded PowerMacs
  • Announce the Mac Mini upgrades that have been in stealth mode so far.
  • Larger capacity iPods.
  • One more thing - tablet*? AirPort Express A/V? Video iPod? Movie Store? some combination?

* I may as well add to the speculation, so: At this point would a tablet be PowerPC based, or with a stripped down OS X, could it be an Intel based tablet?

Good post. I'll add to the "One More Thing..." speculation:

That plus an iTunes subscription service.

Just thought I'd throw it out there because, as far as I recall, it hasn't been mentioned in this thread.

Maybe the idea of the video ipod is not to view hollywood movies, but to sort of share your home videos, like how you share your home photos with with ipod photo.

Hello Yet Again...

(the title is a play on the 'Hello' and 'Hello, again' imagery from two previous Apple landmark announcements...in case you didn't get my criptic frame of mind at present)

Still drunk so sorry if this doesn't flow well, and I am trying to remember what everyone else has said...

What if Apple is working on a tablet-style device, it would go along with the home theatre/media center rumors that are out and about right now?

- a device with video capability you can connect to a TV...
- Apple has received new video/multi-media chips...
- video content via iTMS (iTunes Multimedia Store)...
- talk of new screens in production in China (in some other recent thread)...
- BBC's 'oops' we broadcast something we shouldn't have...

Who says a video iPod or iPod AV or iPod multi-media has to have the same / similar form factor to the current iPods. The 7schuffle ws different, the 'mini a take on the original and the 'nano several Darwinian steps up the iPod evolution ladder. So a new tablet-style device could have an iPod feel but not form factor - and be more...

Who know...time for bed (12.56 am here and the alcohol is making me see little dancing iPod's)

OR music videos which have been available on iTune for a year and are now includeded with select album downloads.

what I really want in the new ipod

is some sort of wireless technology fast enough to stream music to airport express wirelessly. airport express is great but the big problem is that we have to have a laptop to make it a true music server.

I would drool at thought of just turning on my ipod to play music on home stereo. that would be good enough for me to buy a new one. Video is great too, but wireless is what I really want.

and I think it may happen. Having wireless capability also means serving movies as well. you don't need to have movie-playing capability on ipod to have movie-serving capability.

I think the fact that there are so much rumors going around kinda suggests that video ipod is coming, however. People thought we were going to get ipod mini update and not much hoopla was around until Jobs unveiled nano, which took many by surprise.

While many sites do re-hash rumors, I highly doubt WSJ and BBC would just rehash rumors of new video ipod. WSJ has been very accurate as well. Thinksecret has been hit and miss.

I can see what you're saying. But then again, your justification "no ViPod" can be applied to iMovie and iDVD as well. Why bother having iDVD and iMovie, if only a small percentage of people are going to use this software?

I think a lot of people do, in fact, use iMovie/iDVD. And, at the very least, a lot of people have snippets of video lying around on their hard drives (much of it legal). Having an easy way to add that video to an iPod (and play it) would be great, and will probably be done with a new version of iTunes.

NOT in chronological order

Apple has been gobbling up 10,000 Sq.Ft. of floor space in Cupertino recently.
New video capable chips have been shipping to Apple
The last invitation was a pocket on jeans with the words "1000 songs, here we go again."
The new invite says "One More Thing" and it's for the media thus generating a LOT of speculation
Jobs said no cheap Mac then shows us the Mini.
Jobs says iPod video isn't ready for prime time
Jobs says "it's true. We're switching to Intel" 2006 first the low-end Macs,2007 the Pro line.
Apple asks Intel for some of it's chips early.Do they get them? WHY do they want them early?

If I've left anything out I'm sure you will tell me!

discuss :D

Jobs says: "We won't produce any small capacity flash based mp3 players" - Then we get the Shuffle

I like the summary Peace. Mr. Jobs is evidentally well know for his attempts at misdirection!
As for the aurgument that any new iPod will detract from nano sales.... that wasn't true of the colour screened iPods detracting from mini sales was it?

Video capable or not, there is a new iPod coming.
Any new PB will not have enough new features to justify such a high-level launch.
Admittedly a Dual-Core PowerMac (especially if its a dual processor, dual core, PowerMac) would be something worthy of attention... but following Apples reluctance to advertise their computers, I doubt its going to be that either. Maybe when the first Intel Macs are released - but not next week.

I'll make a prediction combining the latest TS and AI reports into one compromise scenario:

* "One More Thing" press event will focus on a new home theater-related (wireless?) device, AND 5th gen. iPods--but not video-centric iPods. (Maybe iPods that can play video files as another "little extra"--but still music-centric.)

* New PowerMacs and PowerBooks on the same day or at least soon, but not the main function of the press event. No Intel Macs yet.

I think you hit the nail on the head on this one!

Strange. I seem to recall last autumn, when the iPod Photo and the U2 Special Edition iPods were released, that a spokesperson for Apple said something to the effect of "these new 4G iPods were built from the ground up, and they are capable of doing other things that are not apparent for the moment...."

Something like that. Does anyone else remember this?

Yep I remember that. My random speculation was that maybe it was decided the screen was too small so they should work on an iPod with a bigger screen to make the video option more attractive.

Right but my point being that they have rented this place for a reason. Apple likes to do things big... And lets face they whipped us, the media, and even the non-interested into a frenzy!

I think that there is more to it than just 'One' announcement.

Did the iPod photo when it was introduced get a theatre rented for the annoucement (I'm asking a serious question here as I can't remember!) ? That was a form change and a fairly significant one for the iPod, well in my opinion! So if they didn't why would a new iPod Movie get a theatre rented for it!?

The Nano did, but that was in conjunction with Motorola ROKR... two announcements.

One more thing is going to be a big play on words!
