Do people even use the ipod touch for music anymore? I don’t even think kids use ipod touches like this article suggests. Most parents i know get their kids cheap smartphones so they can keep in touch with them.

I still use and will continue to use the iPod Touch to listen to music. I prefer this to cut down the charging cycle and keep separate and extend the life.

OK, so back to my question, despite your "Duh" - do you really see Apple selling two products; an iPhone and an iPod that has identical spec in everything except it doesn't do voice calls, and having the massive price gap between them that you're hoping for? An iPhone XR will set you back £750. How much do you think that's going to come down by just removing the voice call function? It's got to drop by £250 just to be comparable with the LTE iPad mini (and still more than the current iPhone 7 which gives you that connectivity). I can see the appeal of what you're wishing for, I just don't see it ever happening. Happy to be proved wrong though.
Apple would never build such a device, it would cannibalize their other products.

I love my iPod 5Gen, (good size, long battery life, headphone jack...)
the only real problem is that it's only iOS9... that's the real problem with Apple;
your devices work fine, but the software 'updates' make them useless for half the apps!

Same here. I ended up deleting most of my apps and everything runs at snails pace. Even the internet runs slow too.
[doublepost=1553021268][/doublepost]I may be interested but have see what is updated and the cost.

Okay, so maybe I'm in a minority here, but when I am travelling in my rental car to unfamiliar areas, I have Apple Maps turned on to the location, with Siri voice directions. To keep that connection stable, I also listen to music on my iPod Touch 6G (quietly in the background; it soothes me). Maybe to some people that's too much redundancy, but I prefer to have my Apple Maps unfettered with distractions on the same iPhone.

I currently have two iPod Touches. I have a 2nd Gen that sits in my clock radio (which has two 30-pin docks), and that I have filled with audio books and old radio shows that I listen to at night - things I don't need clogging up the space on my iPhone SE (even though that has an ample 128GB to play with).

And I have a 5th Gen that I love, except that it barely gets used because the shockingly poor battery life means I can't actually take it anywhere. I would have replaced the 2nd Gen with the 5th Gen, but the change to Lightning port made that impossible.

Would I get another iPod Touch? Probably not, because I wouldn't be able to replace my 2nd Gen anyway because of the port being incompatible with my clock radio. But, as with all things Apple, I won't make a firm commitment until I see what they're offering. I suspect, however, that I'll be saving any funds I might have spent on the Touch to put towards the iPad Mini 5.

Apple still making iPod Touches? Wow when you go to a Apple store you don't even see them all I see are Apple Watch, iMacs, iPhones and pretty much that it is it also just one section for Apple TV. Like many people here who is iPod Touch targeted for because kids now day want a iPhone which sure is annoying to spend so much on a kid (don't have a kid just saying how I feel about it).

I have a Gen 5 and the battery is still good. However, the issue is not getting support on new iOS updates which I am kind of hesitant in getting a new iPod. I did get the SE on clearance last month which I could use to listen to my music but most likely won't since the iPod is still working.

I don't know if I got a dud, but the battery on my Gen 5 was never any good. You charged it up and the battery showed full, then you took it off charge and go off for a walk and the next time it comes out of your pocket, it's in the red zone. Wasn't fun. I have external batteries now, so I supposed I could repurpose it that way nowadays. In fact, that's a good thought - I might just do that.

IIRC, one of the iOS update, not sure which one, seemed to have created a problem that affected the battery life which made mine slightly worse. Now, when it is red and I charge it, it becomes half full after maybe 15 min? So I think it has something to do with the update.

I wish they would bring back an ipod that is just an ipod. My 8 year old is begging for a touch but a touch is all the parts of the iphone I don't want him to have(apps, internet etc) . Wish they would make a device that just played music again.

I still have a soft spot for them... but the battery life on the current gen is atrocious. To the point of being unusable without major compromises... e.g. turning off radios, screen brightness down.

Carefully look at the battery capacity.

That said ... I could still be tempted if the screen as large (ish).

I actually think this product is the most exciting and underrated, being that I’m curious to see what Apple will introduce if any changes were made. I always appreciated the iPod in its existence, even if it really has been forgotten through marketing. It’s nice to see that Apple still updating some of their legacy products like the iPad mini and hopefully the iPod touch.

I don't know about streamlined. I can see Apple spending an hour talking about TV and an hour about News. These are both status quo shattering services in each of their industries.

I know that this comment will attract jeers from the critics but when we look back in retrospect, Apple TV and Apple News will transform each of these industries, if not alone in themselves, they'll start the ball rolling.

If Apple is clearing the schedule, it's because they need the time for their TV and News announcements.
I think we agree here. What I meant by "streamline" is keep it to those services you mentioned. If there's an update to the Apple TV (or any update/elimination of the hardware) that may get mentioned but I think the focus will be on services, in particular New and TV/streaming.
