Not a lot--unless they HAVE to. Which may be the case.

And if a lot of the investment was ALREADY made earlier, then may as well make use of it.

Good point - we can safely assume that Apple was no doubt working on the next PPC PowerMac before they even started to look at the first Intel PowerMac. The chips fore the Intel PowerMacs will not even be out until mid-2006, so they may not even have been able to start designing systems for them until recently. And what have they been doing in the meantime, and for the past year or so? That's right, new PPC PowerMacs! :D

Hey, fun trivia!

More people are born between Oct. 4-6 than any other time of the year w/ Oct 5th having more births (on average) than any other day of the year.

I read that somewhere once.

Who knows why?

(BTW, I turn 18 on the 5th ;) )

Well, nine months before october is the holiday season, wouldn't people be more like to have sex in January/December then any other time of the year?

Here's hoping, but it would be spectacular if they released either one of the two hardware lines tomorrow (or both :D ) or maybe the 5th generation iPod. You never know...

Yeah, supposedly the oct 4-6 range is like the average length of a pregnancy if conception occured on new year eve... or so i'm told.

You know what makes me mad? I was at the mall today and went to the Sony Style store, they had a super small laptop with a 10.5 inch screen and faster than a powerbook with a XGA or w/e screen with a better picture quality.....Steve Jobs needs to stop slacking...I want my new updated PowerBook NOW.

Wait are we even allowed to say that word on this site?

What?

Holiday?

Or sex?

Nothing wrong with saying sex, doesn't hurt anyone, certainly not offensive.

Sex sex sex. Mmmmm....

Now back to the topic. New iPods would be sweet, new PowerBook also sweet.

I don't think that URL will ever be valid. ;)

It's a real shame though. I think Apple has a real opportunity to seize and they are letting it slip. If Apple released a new low power G5 PB, with updated Highspeed FSB, and PCI-E GPU, high-res display, right before the Christmas shopping season it would be a huge success. There is a very large user base that wants this machine and would buy one right now to tide them over for 2-3 years until the Mactel portables are well established with native software.

Apple could still release the Merom chipset pro portable in the fall of 2006. The G5 PB and Mactel portable could overlap in sales for a short while until Apple finally terminates the PPC PB line.

I would love to see the great PB line go out with a bang, than with a whimper of speed bump. But I fear Apple is too cowardly to take this creative risk.

Shipping Times on PBs

I have been paying close attention to the estimated shipping time on the powerbooks, and in the past day or two the ship time on stock PB 15inch SuperDrive models has jumped from 24hrs to 1-2 days. Before the increase in stock shipping delay on this model, any modifications to the stock setup bumped ship time to 2-3 weeks. This is still the case.
Also of note, the PB 15inch ComboDrive model has increased shipping delay of 6-8 days with the addition of pre-installed software.
The shipping delay on all other PB models seems to be pretty standard.
Aren't the 15inch PBs the most popular PB Apple sells?...
Maybe they are just running low on stock... or maybe they are clearing out the old to make way for new PBs (I hope!!!)
Anyways... some food for thought, anyone think this might be a sign of something?

P.S. - my first post :D

Congrats on your first post!
If I remember correctly, this was the first sign for the iMac G5 Rev. B release.

Just because IBM couldn't deliver in a technological capacity does not make Apple cowardly. You try shoe-horning in that hot, server-class chip into a laptop. Apple could only work with what IBM gave them. Is Intel cowardly for not cramming their Itanium 2 into a laptop? :p  I don't know if taking a "creative risk" and putting a G5 in a laptop would go over to well when users' legs started melting... ;)

As for a next-to-nothing speed bump, who says this will definitely be the case? If Apple implements a 7448 architecture then the PowerBook could definitely receive more than just a "whimper of a speed bump" - better than just another marginal 30 MHz bump on the existing chipset at least.

Oh well, perhaps we'll know tomorrow...

I have been wanting 5th Generation iPods for a while. Mine is still a 3rd and I want something new. I hope they don't update the PowerMacs though, I got mine a few months ago and I am hoping apple will hold out until Intel chips.

I just got mine, and I don't want it to be outdated before it even arrives, this technology game sucks

they are not rleasing the G5 power book latops becasue they can't. That is oneof the reasosn they are switching to Intel. IBM can't make cool enough G5 processors for the laptop.

Not much you can do about it though - that's technology - love it or leave it! Oh wait, you can't leave it...

iPods hold a decent resell value, so selling on ebay can sometimes pay a huge portion of a new one.
